BRIEF INTRODUCTION
After you have done with you style pattern for ladies’ skirt. You may
now proceed to the pre- construction stage and that is the selection and the
preparation of fabric before cutting. Choose a breathable fabric and can
absorb sweat easily, durable, and easy to handle. Examples of this materials
are twill and cotton stretch or spandex best suited for athletics skirt. But if
you do not have time or budget, you may use any recyclable cloth material at
home like your old uniform and cotton curtain. When you are ready with the
material you may lay out, pin, cut and mark fabric following the standard
procedure discuss on this Lesson.

LESSON 2.1:
PREPARATION OF MATERIALS FOR
LADIES’ SKIRT
TYPES OF FABRIC
Cotton Fabric
It is a soft & fully staple fiber which has been
cultivated it grows in a boll contain a cellulose
fiber. Good in strength, color retention even in
machine & dry-clean washable & it has good
absorbency.
Silk Fabric
The availability of natural protein fiber of silk
influence to woven fabric into textiles. It as a
smooth, soft, strongest texture with a very
good moisture, it is an elastic fiber & avoids
the dirt.

4
Satin Fabric

Gorgeous, shimmery, and shiny fabric. It

ranges from light- to heavyweight and drapes
well.

Polyester Fabric
Generally, have less of a 'natural' feel in
comparison to cotton or wool, however they
are somewhat favored by sewers due to their
durability, fantastic color retention,
wrinkle/shrink-resistance and how
inexpensive they are.
Chiffon Fabric
Refers to a light plain woven sheer fabric with
a soft drape. Chiffon fabric can be
manufactured using different fibers like silk or
synthetic, cotton etc. but chiffon is generally
associated with fibers like nylon or silk.

STEPS IN PREPARING THE MATERIALS BEFORE CUTTING

Step 1
Soaking the fabric at least 2 to 4 hours.

Step 2
Hang the fabric without squeezing it.

Step 3
Let it dry through natural way or on the
hanging line/hanger.

Step 4
Check if the fabric is on grain then
straighten it back to original form.

5
Iron it to remove the creases if necessary.

PROCEDURE IN FOLDING THE FABRIC BEFORE CUTTING

In preparing the fabric before cutting, the fabric should be folded “wrong
side” out. It is necessary to fold the fabric correctly, neatly, smoothly and
without crumpled/crease or you need to press or iron the fabric. It is
necessary to fold the fabric because our pattern is only half part of the
garments, so we need to fold the fabric to make two pieces equivalent to front
and back part of the garments/skirt.

PARTS AND FOLDS OF THE FABRIC

1. Selvage – the finished edge of a woven fabric

2. Raw edge – the cut edge of the fabric
3. Wrong side –pale part of the fabric
4. Right side –the shiny or printed part of the fabric
5. Grainline – the direction of yarn the woven fabric

Note: The fold of the fabric that we are going to apply in our
project which is gartered ladies skirt is horizontal fold.

LESSON 2.2: LAY-OUT AND

MARK PATTERN ON CLOTH
Read and analyze the steps in laying out and pinning pattern pieces
on the cloth correctly.

PROCEDURE AND POINTERS/ RULES OBSERVED IN LAYING OUT

PATTERN
Laying out a 45-width fabric

Laying out of fabric

Fold the fabric horizontally without
crumpled just enough for the style
pattern; if you have no style pattern fold
the fabric just enough for the length of the
skirt plus (+) 5 inches for allowances
needed.

Laying out the style pattern on the

fabric
In this figure, I used 45 width fabric so
there is an excess part on the side, it is not
necessary to be cut. You can include this
as full width of the skirt because the style
pattern on this sample is applicable for 36
width fabric.

9
Pinning of style pattern on the fabric

Based on my experience pinning style

pattern on the fabric is done
perpendicular to line, then at least 5 to 7
inches apart on the straight edges and
slanted on the corner. Do not lift the fabric
while pinning and do not remove the pins
while the construction marks has not been
done.

Laying out the fabric without style

pattern
If you have no style pattern fold the fabric
just enough for the length of the skirt plus
(+) 5 inches for allowances needed.
Note: *further explanation is included on the transferring of construction marks
activities/ lesson.

LESSON2.4: TRANSFER
CONSTRUCTION MARKS ON CLOTH
Word Study:
Construction Mark – line or symbol transferred to a fabric from pattern
Seamline – lines wherein you run the stitches to assemble a garment

After cutting the fabric, transferring the construction mark will be done
on the wrong side part of the fabric. It should be legible and smoothly done.
Make sure to use the proper tools in transferring the construction mark. Use
tailor’s chalk or dressmaker’s carbon paper aided by a tracing wheel and
ruler. Whichever tool you decide to use, make sure that you transfer all
important pattern marks clearly and accurately. The following are the general
details to be marked:

1. Seam lines along curves and corners

2. Position of pockets
3. Stitching lines
4. center lines for the front and back opening, facings, and
interfacing’s
5. darts
6. location of buttons and buttonholes
7. points where stitching lines should stop
8. fold lines
9. any other special markings used to construct the garment

The most common tools are:

1. Tailors Chalk & Marking Pencils

these are available in many forms at
sewing departments

2. Dressmaker's Carbon paper- is available

in non-wax, wax, and vanishing forms. They
are all a sheet for of transferring
material.

3.Tracing Wheels are available in a variety of

forms. Wheels are
smooth or spiked. Some have extra features
such as a smooth area for pressure marking.

16
Objectives:

Read and analyze the steps in transferring construction marks on cloth.

PROCEDURE IN TRANSFERRING CONSTRUCTION MARKS ON YOUR CUT

FABRICS.
This is the proper way of transferring construction marks on your
cut fabric. If you laid out style pattern, make sure not to remove pins.
If you did not use any pattern you can follow this picture:

1. From the bottom part of the fabric measure 2 inches upward for
bottom hem allowance. Then mark it with straight line as shown.
2. From side edges of the fabric mark 1 inch inward for the side seam
allowance. Then mark it with straight line.
3. From the top part of the fabric measure 2 inches downward. Then
mark it with a straight line. This will be your allowance for waistline
garter case.
