BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Planning garment design which are pleasing, stylish and


wearable based on individual style and body shape is a skill
that can be acquired by applying the principles and elements
of design. Knowing about elements of design like color, line,
shape and how to add interesting details using the principles of
art will help you create flattering and unique garment.

LESSON 1.1: PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN


Objectives

1. Identify the principles of design, necessary in garment construction.


2. Differentiate the forms of balance and kinds of rhythm.
3. Apply the principles of art in designing a sleeping garment.

• Balance – refers to the proper and satisfactory arrangement of the


various elements in a design.

Three kinds of Visual Balance

a. Formal or Symmetrical Balance. It is achieved when


the designs on both sides of the garment are equal or the
same.

b. Informal or Asymmetrical Balance.


This occurs when an object appears unequal in the
arrangement of the elements of design.

c. Radial Balance. This is the repetition of an accent to


create an interesting design.

• Emphasis – it is the focal point or the concentration of interest in the


selected area of the design.

• Harmony – also called a unity of design. When design elements and


principles complement each other there is harmony.

• Proportion – it refers to the pleasing relationship between the elements


of design.

• Rhythm - is the repetition of an accent to create an interesting design.

Types of Rhythm

a. Repetition – using the same motifs or design.

b. Progression - created by the gradual increase or


decrease of similar design elements.

c. Transition – the gradual flow of an accent or design in fabrics or
garments.

d. Radiation - creates a feeling of movement in


different directions.

e. Graduated - the arrangement of motifs or designs


are interval or in irregular distance and directions

LESSON 1.2: ELEMENTS OF DESIGN


(Lines and Texture)
Objectives:

1. Give the uses of lines as design elements in constructing garments.


2. Differentiate the two types of texture.
3. Explain the effect of fabric texture to garments and to the wearer.

• Lines – create an illusion of height and width.
• Texture – refers to the way the things look or feel.

Two types of lines on garments

Directional Lines

- Examples are vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and curved lines. These affect the
height and size of an individual.

Structural Lines -are made by sewing together the parts of the garment. They
are found on necklines, arm holes and other parts of garments

• Directional Lines
a. Vertical lines – make a short person appear taller and a plump one
appear slimmer.
b. Horizontal lines – make the figure appear wider and stouter.
c. Diagonal lines – have the same effect as those of the horizontal and
vertical lines, depending on the kind of print of material.
d. Curved lines – have soft, attractive and feminine effect.

Direction: With the assistance of your elder brother or other family member,
sketch a design of pajama blouse using a fabric with this design for this two
women in the picture to hide their figure defects or improve their body figure.

Direction: Ask the help of your mother or elder sister in collecting at least 5
swatches of fabric, ( 1 x 1 in size) from your closet that represents different
textures. Paste and label them with the texture present on them.

Factors to Consider in Choosing Color of Clothes

o Age and sex. Bright colors are good for children, while light colors
are for elderly.
Today all colors are in fashion for both boys and girls.

o Season and Time. In summer, light and cool colors like green, blue,
pink, white, light purple give a feeling of coolness.
Warm colors like red, orange and yellow are good for rainy
season.
Likewise, dark and bright colors are best to wear at
nightthese adds beauty of the wearer, while very warm and bright
glossy clothes make the viewer and the wearer uncomfortable.

o Size and Shape of the Body. Warm colors increase the body size
and enhance the body line, while cool colors reduce its size. On the
other hand, dark and bright colors give a healthy look to slender
person.
o Color of Skin, Hair, and Eyes. Dark colors look better on person
with white complexion, cool color is on with fair complexion.

o Occasion. Dark colors represent joy and happiness, they should be


wear on parties, weddings, festivals and other related occasion .
Light and dull colors are for formal occasion.

o Fashion. Colors of dress keep on changing with the change of


fashion, but color in fashion should only be worn if it suits the
personality, color and figure.

o Personality. Colors enhances the personality of the wearer, some


people like bright colors others preferred dull ones.

Colors express varied moods also. Warm colors indicate cheerfulness and
enthusiasm.

LESSON 1.4: TYPES AND CHARACTERISTICS OF


SLEEPING GARMENTS
Objectives

1. Explain the characteristics of sleeping garments


2. Identify the different kinds of sleeping garments
3. Design sleeping garment appropriate for summer time.

LEARNING CONTENT
Characteristics of Sleeping Garments
1. They should not exceed the maximum dimensions specified in the
regulations for the chest, waist, seat, upper arm, thigh, wrist, or ankle.
2. They should have no fabric ornament or trim, such as lace or ribbon, which
extends more than ¼ inch from the point at which it is attached to the
garment.
3. They should have sleeves that taper from the shoulders to the ends of the
sleeves.
4. They should have pant legs that taper from the thighs to the ends of the
legs.
5. If they are a 1 piece, they should taper from the chest down to the waist and
from the seat up to the waist.

Types of Sleeping Garments:

Sleeping garments – are clothing designed to be worn while sleeping. They are
also called nightwear, nightdress, nightclothes, or sleepwear

LESSON 1.5: PROJECT PLANNING

2. Explain the importance of project plan and how it is done.

LEARNING CONTENT
Project plan – serves as a guide for the systematic construction of the
project.
Project planning – it states how to complete a project within a certain
time frame, usually with defined stages and designated resources.

Parts of the Project Plan

1. Project Plan No. – reflects the number of projects.

2. Date Begun – date when the construction of the project will start.

3. Date Finished – the exact date when the project will be completed.

4. Name of the Project – a specific description of the job/project.

5. Objectives – states the purpose why a project should be done. This is


usually stated in three learning domains: the cognitive, psychomotor and
affective.

6. Tools and Equipment – list of tools and equipment in the accomplishment


of the job.

7. Materials and Supplies Needed – the itemized list of tools and supplies
needed to produce a project.

a. Quantity – suggests the amount needed.

b. Unit – is the unit of measure of the quantity.

c. Description – refers to the features and characteristics of the


materials and supplies needed.

d. Unit Cost – is the selling price per quantity and unit of the materials.

e. Total- is the over-all total cost of all the supplies and materials to be
used.

8. Design of the Project – the photographic representation of the project .

9. Procedure – the chronological steps or operations involved to accomplish


the project. This is divided into two stages:

a. Preliminary Construction – states the preparation to be done before


the actual construction of the project.

b. Construction Process – the actual procedures involve in the actual


making of the project.

10. Evaluation – the process of assessing the finished project with its given
criteria prepared during planning and evaluating.
