Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

• A magnet is a material that produces magnetic field.

• Magnets have invisible magnetic field which attracts objects made
of iron and nickel.
• One end of a bar magnet is the north pole and the opposite is the
south pole.
• Magnets are attracted to three types of metals. These metals are
made of nickel, iron, and cobalt.
• There are several types of magnets like ring magnets, rectangular
magnets, and bar magnets.
• When the same poles of two magnets, whether North or South, are
placed close to each other, they repel or push each other.
• When the opposite poles are placed closed to each other, they
attract or pull each other.
• Magnets are important in our daily life. They play an important
role in a wide range of devices. MRI machines which
doctors use to look inside people's bodies use magnet to create a
clear, detailed picture of bones, organ and tissues.
• Magnets range in size from a speck to industrial monsters
weighing tons.
• Most homes contain many magnets. Refrigerator magnets hold
papers, bottle openers and other small items to the metal
refrigerator door.
• A pocket compass uses a magnetic needle to show which way is
north.
• The dark magnetic strip on the backside of a credit card stores
data in much the same way as a computer’s hard drive does.
• Vacuum cleaners, blenders and washing machines all have
electric motors that work by magnetic principles. You will find
magnets in phones, doorbells, shower curtains, weights and
children's toys.
