Detailed Lesson Plan in Science

Grade IV

I. OBJECTIVES: at the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to Infer that animals
have body structures to protect themselves from enemies.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

A. Topic: Body Parts of Animals for Protection
B. References: Curriculum Guide code S4LT- llc- d- 5, Teacher’s Guide p. 108-111
Learner’s Materials, p. 105-106
C. Materials: Learning Module, Powerpoint presentation and illustrations of different
Body Structures.
D. Value Focus: Caring for Animals

III. LEARNING PROCEDURES

Teacher’s Activities Pupil’s Activities

A. Preliminary Activities

1. Review
Show different body parts of animals that used for
getting/eating their food.
-
- I have here some pictures of different body parts
of animals used for getting/eating their food

Ask: - Teeth
- What does dogs used to get food? - Horses uses their teeth
- How does horses get food? - Monkey’s uses their teeth to get their
- How about monkeys? food.

food. get food.

Very Good!

2. Motivation
Let the class play “4 Pics 1 Word.”
Ask:
- Are you familiar with “4 Pics 1 Word” - Yes teacher.
- Okay, so let’s play 4 Pics 1 Word”

1. - PAWS

2. - BEAKS
3. - TEETH

B. Presentation
Ask the pupils about activity.

- How did you find the activity? - I find the activity an interesting and
challenging.
- Why do you think animals protect themselves
from their enemies? - They protect themselves for their
enemies for them to survive.
C. Discussion
Present the topic.
Say:
 CAMOUFLAGE
- a protective coloration in animals. This
adaptation allows some animals to blend with
their surroundings.

1. Grasshopper 2. Toads

2. Owl 4. Dove

 BODY PARTS
- Animals protect themselves by using their body
parts such as strong legs, paws, claws, sharp
pointed teeth, and other parts of the body.

Examples:
CRAB – Pincer HORSE- Legs

CARABAO- Horn LION- Sharp pointed

teeth and claws

- Crabs uses their pincer

Ask: - Horses uses their legs.
- What does crabs used to protect themselves? - Carabaos uses their horns.
- How about horses
- What does carabaos use for protection?

 MIMICRY
- Other animals imitate the shape, smell, taste,
color and even sound of other animals. This
behavior is called MIMICRY.

Examples:
- Elephant hawk caterpillar mimic a snake
-

- Insect mimic of a eucalyptus leaf.

 Most insects secrete chemicals that they use to

protect themselves from other animals like squid,
wasps and snake.

Ask: What do you think is the chemical present on these? - Venom

- Ink

 SHELLS
 Animals like turtles, crabs, snails and oysters
have protective shell coverings. When they
sense danger, they keep their bodies inside their
shells
Examples:
- Turtle Snail

 MOVE IN HERDS

- Most of the animals protect themselves from their

enemies by moving in large groups.
- It becomes difficult from enemies to attack such
large group.
-

D. Application
Direction: Identify the different body structures used by

enemies.

1. 4. 1. Body covering or shell

2. Chemicals

3. Body parts or Legs

2.
4. Camouflage
5.
5. Body parts or sharp claws

3.

E. Generalization
Say:
Animals protect themselves by using their body parts
such as strong legs, paws, claws, sharp pointed teeth,
and other parts of the body. Other animals protect their
own kind by staying together within hearing distance.
And for animals that cannot move fast they use their hard
shell by keeping their bodies inside. Furthermore, others
secret chemicals

IV. Evaluation
