Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Science 6 Self-Learning Module 14: Transformation from

Electricity to Sound to Heat!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and

independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to
help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Science 6 Self-Learning Module: Transformation from

Electricity to Sound to Heat!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

Expectations - This points to the set of knowledge and skills

that you will learn after completing the module.

Pretest - This measures your prior knowledge about the lesson

at hand.

Recap - This part of the module provides a review of concepts

and skills that you already know about a previous lesson.

Lesson - This section discusses the topic in the module.

Activities - This is a set of activities that you need to perform.

entire module.
EXPECTATION

This module will focus mostly on explaining on how electricity can be

transformed into sound to heat.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. identify objects that can be transformed from electricity to sound

and to heat;
2. infer how electricity can be transformed to sound and to heat; and
3. recognize energy transformation (electricity to sound to heat) that
occurs in the real world.

PRETEST
Directions: Choose the letter of the best answer. Write the letter of your
answer on a separate sheet of paper.

1. When you plug in a radio and turn it on, how is electricity transformed?
A. sound energy to mechanical energy
B. mechanical energy to sound energy
C. sound energy to mechanical energy to heat energy
D. electrical energy to mechanical energy to sound energy

2. Which of the following objects is transformed from electricity to sound

and to heat?
A. radio
B. blender
C. LED lamp
D. oven toaster

3. What is always produced when energy is transformed from electrical to

mechanical to sound?
A. electricity
B. chemical
C. heat
D. light
4. Which energy conversion is taking place in this picture?

A. mechanical energy to electrical energy

B. electrical energy to sound energy to heat energy
C. potential energy to kinetic energy to heat energy
D. none of these

5. Which of the following statements is correct?

A. Potential energy is a moving energy.
B. Thermal energy is also known as kinetic energy.
C. An energy transformation is the change of energy from one form
to another.
D. None of these.

RECAP
Now, let us try to do a simple activity to help you freshen up your mind
and recall your past lesson. Ready? Let us play a crossword puzzle. Read the
statements and find the answer in the crossword puzzle.

1. It is also referred to as thermal energy.

2. It is a form of energy caused by light waves.
3. It is the flow of electric charge.
4. It is the energy that could be heard through the microphone
and the loudspeaker.
LESSON

Electrical Energy

Electrical energy is the energy of moving electrons in any electric

current that flows through a wire. When we use electricity, it changes to
another form of energy such as light in a bulb or mechanical energy in a toy
car.

Electricity is a form of energy produced by the movement of electrons.

Electricity flows through a substance that conducts electricity. We need
electricity to light our houses and use appliances to make our daily living
easier.

Figure 1. Electrical flow

Sound Energy

Figure 2. Sound waves

Sound energy is the energy produced by vibrating objects. When

objects vibrate, sound waves are produced. The air serves as the medium
that transmits sound. Sound waves are able to travel best through rigid
solids rather than through liquids and gases.
Electrical to Sound Energy Transformation

When we use a microphone, electricity is transformed to sound energy.

The actual process happens when the microphone is plugged into a device
which is powered by electric current, converting it to electric signals, then
converting it to sound. The microphone picks up the sound waves produced
by the voice of the singer or speaker, converts them to an electric signal, then
an electronic device amplifies it, and converts it back to sound through an
audio speaker for the audience to hear

So, you can say that the audio speaker is actually the device that
converts electrical energy into sound energy!

Heat Energy

Heat energy is the result of the movement of tiny particles called

atoms; molecules or ions in solids, liquids, and gases. Heat energy can be
transferred from one object to another. The transfer or flow due to the
difference in temperature between the two objects is called heat.

Figure 3. Heat
Electrical energy can be transformed into heat energy in an electric
circuit if a toaster, stove, or heater is added to the circuit.
Energy Transformation

Energy transformation, also known as energy conversion, is the

process of changing energy from one form to another. There are numerous
forms of energy that can be transformed like electrical energy, sound energy,
and heat energy.

The diagram below shows how electrical energy changes from one form
to another.
ACTIVITIES

Activity 1: We Belong!

Directions: Group the examples in the box according to how the energy is
transformed. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

Activity 3: Battle of the Scientist!

Directions: This is a “Pinoy Henyo” inspired activity. Get a partner. Write

each given word on a flashcard. Decide who will be player A and player B.
Player A will randomly choose a flashcard and paste it on his/her forehead
without looking at the word on it. At a signal, player A will try to guess the
word on the flashcard by asking questions answerable by OO (yes), HINDI
(no) or PWEDE (can be). Player B will answer the questions with YES or NO
or PWEDE until player A guesses the word or until the time is up. Each
player has only 1 minute to guess the word.
Clue: appliances.
Words to Guess:

RADIO TELEVISION MICROPHONE

HAIR BLOWER LAPTOP
