LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET
GRADE 6- EARTH SCIENCE QUARTER 3
I. Introductory Concept

Energy can be transformed form one form to another. Heat and light is a form
of energy. Heat is a means of transferring energy from one place to another. Heat
energy can be transformed to other forms of energy like light energy. In the same
manner, light energy can be transformed into heat energy.
Energy transformation is very useful to humans. People have invented
machines or devices that work or operate based on this concept. Thus, makes work
easier and faster and makes life more comfortable.
In this Learning Activity Sheet (LAS) you will explore on the activities involving
heat to light energy and light to heat energy transformation.

II. Learning Skills from the MELCs

Demonstrate how heat and light can be transformed. (S6FE-IIId-f-2)

III. Activities
Activity 1
Heat Light Energy Transformation

Directions: You will perform an activity showing how heat is transformed to light and
vice versa.

Materials needed:
• matchsticks
• paper
• candle
Procedure:
NOTE: Ask assistance from an adult.
A. Burning of Paper
1. Strike the head of the matchstick on the side of the matchbox. Observe the
flame coming from the matchstick.
2. Light up one end of the paper. Observe the portion where the fire starts.

B. Lighting up Candles
1. Position three candles 10 cm apart.
2. Light up the three candles. Observe the glowing portion of the tip of the wick.
3. Place your hand near the lighted candles. Observe what happens.

IV. Analysis

A. Guide Questions
1. What made the matchstick light up?
2. What form of energy took place in the matchstick for it to light up?
3. What caused the paper to burn? What did you observe on the paper while it
was burning?
4. What energy transformation took place in the burning paper?
B. Guide Questions
1. What form of energy did the candles produce?
2. What did the light produce? What did you feel when you placed your hand
near the lighted candle?
3. What energy transformation took place from the lighted candle that you felt in
your hand?

V. Abstraction

Energy can be transformed from light energy to heat even without the use of
electricity. This is shown in setting up a bonfire during camping days and using candle
or “lampara” when studying at night. These are some of the activities that give off
light in the form of fire that when you get near, you can feel the heat.
Heat can move from one object to another in three different ways: conduction,
convection and radiation. The heat that we feel from the situations mentioned above
is the warmth radiated from the light source. Radiation is the transfer of heat through
space in the form of waves. Heat waves are invisible.

VI. Application

Cite 2 real life situations showing heat and light energy transformation.
Give a brief explanation.

VII. Answer Key

Analysis

A.
1. By striking the matchstick’s head on the side of the matchbox.
2. Heat energy
3. The heat energy from the matchstick transformed to light in the form of fire on
the burning paper. (answers may vary)
4. Heat to light energy

B.
1. Light energy
2. It produced heat energy. My hand felt warm.
3. Light to heat energy
