Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can
best help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part
of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And
read the instructions carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.
Lesson Why Some Materials are
3 Good Conductors of Heat
and Electricity
You have learned in the previous activities that conduction is one of the ways on
how heat can be transferred to another material. It is also the transfer of heat in
solids or from particles to particles. Different materials differ in the way they
conduct heat.
What’s In
GOOD CONDUCTOR
You have learned that some materials have characteristics that made them good
conductors of heat and electricity. Find out the reason by doing the activity.
Activity 1
(casserole) (steel)
IV. Questions:
What is It
What makes metal a good conductor of heat and electricity? Metals are good
conductors of heat and electricity because of their electronic particles and also
because they tend to denser so that heat is transferred by neighboring atoms in close
contact. Metals are made up of atoms. Atoms are the tiniest particles of matter.
What’s More
I have learned that ________ are good conductors of heat and electricity because of
their ____________ and tend to become denser so that heat transferred by the atoms
in close contact is more efficient. _________ is a metal commonly used in electrical
wires because of its _____________. And that our body and non-metallic materials
can be conductors of electricity because of the presence of __________________.
Assessment
Additional Activities
For your additional task, read and answer the questions. Explain your
answer briefly. Observe the standards in writing. Write your answer on a separate
sheet of paper.
1. Why are cooking pots and baking ovens made of metals?

_______________________________________________________
2. Why non-metallic materials like silicon and water are also conductors of
electricity?

What’s In
Before we proceed with the new lesson, let us have a review. Ready?
What’s New
You have learned that there are materials that allow heat and electricity to be
transferred to other materials. Can you illustrate now these materials? Let’s try.
Activity 1
I. Title: Let’s Make It
II. Materials: bond paper, pencil. crayons
III. Procedure:
1. In a bond paper, draw a household appliance.
2. Color it to make it realistic.
3. Label the parts of the appliance that is a conductor of electricity.
IV. Questions:
1. What can you say about the activity?
_______________________________________________________
2. Did you follow the instruction given to you in doing the activity?
_______________________________________________________
3. What lesson did you learn from the activity?
_______________________________________________________
Score Description
4 The illustration manifests outstanding characteristics as to create, color
blending, conceptual understanding, and completeness of details.
3 The illustration manifests very satisfactory characteristics as to create, color
blending, conceptual understanding, and completeness of details.
2 The illustration manifests satisfactory characteristics as to create, color
blending, conceptual understanding, and completeness of details.
1 The illustration manifests poor characteristics as to create, color blending,
conceptual understanding, and completeness of details.
What is It
Knowing the materials that are good conductors of heat and electricity, it will
be easier for you to illustrate/ draw it as well as labeling it which is the conductor
and insulator.
What’s More
Activity
I. Title: My Design
II. Materials: pencil, marking/pentel pen, crayon, bond paper
III. Procedure:
1. In a bond paper, illustrate/create a new toy/appliance.
2. Take electrical safety into consideration.
3. Design the part of the appliance using materials that are
conductors.
IV. Questions:
What are the things to be remembered when you have to illustrate or draw
something?
Should you take into consideration the safety of electrical usage? Why?

What’s In
Before we start with the new lesson, let us recall the lessons you have learned.
Look at the different materials and appliances in your house. Which among
these are conductors of heat and electricity? Write your answers on a separate sheet
of paper and point out the conductor in the materials or appliance/s.
What’s New
What do you think would happen to the materials around us if there will be
no conductors or insulators?
Activity
I. Title: My Importance
II. Materials: pictures of different conductors of heat and electricity
III. Procedure:
1. Look at the pictures of different conductors of heat and electricity.
Name of
Materials Importance/Uses

Conductors Hospital At school Factories At home
IV. Questions:
1. What materials are good conductors of heat and electricity?
2. How are they useful in hospitals?
What is It
Homes, schools, factories, hospitals use materials that conduct heat and
electricity. When you are cooking and uses appliances the energy transfers heat from
the appliance to the food. However, the handle must not get uncomfortably hot.
Schools use materials run by electricity, such as computers, electric fans, lamps,
and others. Same with hospitals, they use equipment using conductors of electricity.
What’s More
A. Look at each picture, choose inside the parenthesis its uses or importance
of the materials as a conductor of heat and electricity. Write your answer
in a separate sheet of paper.
1.
( to provide heat, to provide sound, to provide light )
2.
( used to entertain, used to convert data and facts
into meaningful information and knowledge, used
to provide heat and light )
