ELECTRIC CIRCUIT
Activity Sheet No.

I. Objective: Demonstrate ways to connect a dry cell (source), a bulb (load), and wires (connections) to make the bulb light .
A. Materials: half meter of copper wire cut into three equal circuits.
Small flashlight bulb.
Electrical tape.
Dry Cells/ Batteries
Push button switch
II. Procedure:
1. Get the three pieces of copper wire and remove about half a centimeter of insulation
at both ends of each wire.
2. Gently rub the bare ends of the wire with sandpaper.
3. Connect the wires to the bulb, switch and dry cell as shown.
4. Close the circuit by pressing the switch buttons. Observe the bulb. Describe any change in the bulb.
5. Open the circuit by releasing your finger from switch. Describe any change in the bulb.

I. Objective: Identify materials that when connected between any two points in an electric circuit does/does not make it work (conductors and

A. Materials: 1 glass with salt water labeled A

2 wooden skewers, 4 big metal paper clips
2 dry cells, electrical tape
2 small light bulbs

II. Procedure:
1. Secure wire on one end of the dry cell then secure the other end to the light bulb.

2. Use another wire and secure one end of it in the same bulb. Then attach another end to the paper clip.

3. Secure another wire on the end to the dry cell and attach another end of the wire to another paper clip.

4. Hang the two clips on the wooden skewers and hang it across glass A. See to it that the end part of the clips touches the water.

5. Do the same with glass B.

Electromagnets
Activity Sheet No.
I. Objective: Construct an electromagnet
A. Materials: a bar magnet
a compass
a cardboard about 6 by 6 inches
2 pieces of wire about 90 cm. (36 inches long)

II. Procedure:
1. Roll a cardboard like a cylinder. Get one of the 2 pieces of wire. Wrap the wire around the cardboard roll.
2. Wrap the other piece of wire around the compass. Make sure you can still see the compass needle. Leave about two inches of wire each end.
3. Join the other other ends of the wire wrapped around the cardboard roll with the ends of the wire wrapped around the compass. See the illustration.
Move the bar magnet back and forth.

1. What happened to the compass needle when you moved the bar magnet inside the coil of wire back and forth?

6. Connect the other end of the wire to the other end of the dry cell.
7. Bring the nail near a paper clip. Observe.

I. Objective: Explain how simple machines help make work easier and faster
A. Materials: can opener, knife, door knob, screw driver, rope, pulley, eggplant, 3m board, screw, a bottle of coke, heavy baggage.

II. Procedure:
1. Open the bottle of coke with your hands. Do the same thing using the can opener.
2. Get the knife then cut the eggplant.
3. Using the screw driver, turn the screw into a piece of wood. Then screw it. Describe the effort used to turn the screw. Was it easy?
4. Hold the door knob. Open and close the door.
5. Get a heavy baggage and lift it on a table. Place the same baggage on the table by pushing it an inclined plane.
6. Fix the pulley in a bar. Tie a heavy load at one end of the rope. Lift the load by pulling the rope down.

Simple Machines (LEVER)


Activity Sheet No.

I. Objective: Describing How a Lever Helps Us Do Work


A. Materials
1 meter stick strings
Iron stand 20-gram mass and 5-gram mass

II. Procedure:
1. Tie a piece of string around the exact center of the meter stick. The center is the fulcrum of
the meter stick.
2. Tie the other end of the string with the meter stick to the iron stand.
3. Tie the string to the 20-gram mass and the 5-gram mass.
4. At the right side of the meter stick hang the 20-gram mass 5 centimeters away from the fulcrum. This mass is the
resistance force. The distance of this mass to the fulcrum is the resistance distance.
5. Balance the meter stick by hanging the 5-gram mass at the appropriate side of the meter stick until the meter stick is
in horizontal position. The 5-gram mass is the effort. The distance of the effort from the fulcrum is the effort distance.
6. Record your observations in a table like this.
7. Use the following equation to find the unknown force or the lever arm for a balance lever.
Resistance force x resistance distance =effort force x effort distance
8. The product of F and D is called the resistance moment (M ) while the product of F and D is called the effort moment
(M .).
9. Calculate the ideal mechanical advantage (I.M.A.) of the lever using the formula:

I. Objective: Describing How an Inclined Plane Helps Us Do Work


A. Materials
Spring balance cord plastic cover
Board, 1 meter long toy cart
Some books small stones

II. Procedure:
1. Arrange the board with one end on a pile of books 25 centimeters high. The board serves as the inclined plane ramp.
2. Put enough small stones in the toy cart and weigh it in grams. Cover the toy cart to hold the stones in place. The toy
cart is the load or resistance.
3. Attach the spring balance to the toy cart and pull it slowly up the board ramp. The force that you exert is the effort.
The distance over which the toy cart moves is the effort distance. The height of the plane is the resistance distance.
4. Get the reading of the spring balance and record it on a table.
5. Do steps 3 and 4 three times.
6. Attach the spring balance to the toy cart and lift it to height of 25 centimeters. Get the reading of the spring balance
and record it on a table.
7. Do step 6 three times.
