Most Essential Learning Competencies

 Investigate how black and colored objects affect ability to absorb
heat
 Identify the materials that can block, absorb, or transmit light
 Relate the ability of the material to block, absorb or transmit light
to its use. (S5FE-IIIe-5)

To the Learner
This module was specially designed to help you understand
and apply the lesson objectives. Read and follow the simple
instructions as your guide.
1. Set a conducive learning space at home so you can focus.
2. Seek assistance from your parents or guardian to guide you
in doing the activities.
3. Take down important concepts and list questions you would
like to ask from your teacher.
4. Reflect and apply the concepts learned.
The Writer
Expectations

In this module, you will relate the ability of the material to block, absorb, or transmit light

Specifically, this module will help you to:

 investigate how black and colored object affect ability to absorb heat;

 relate the ability of the material to block, absorb or transmit light to its use; and

 identify the materials that can block, absorb, or transmit sound.

Looking Back Light, or Visible Light, commonly refers to
electromagnetic radiation that can be detected by the
human eye

What are the sources of light?

Fill out each circle of the graphic organizer with different sources of light.

LIGHT

Brief Introduction
Light, or Visible Light, commonly refers to as electromagnetic radiation that can

be detected by the human eye. Light is a form of energy that enables us to see all the

things around us. The main source of light on Earth is the sun. Light can transmit in

different materials.

Transmission refers to the passing of light through some materials.

Transparent materials allow all light to pass through them. Clear plastic and

glass windows are examples of transparent materials.

Translucent materials allow some light to pass through them. Stained glasses

and frosted windows are examples of translucent materials.

Opaque materials do not allow light to pass through them. Brick, metal, thick

paper, aluminum foil, wood and stones are example of opaque materials.

3
Activity 1: Black or White?

Objective: Investigate how black and colored objects in their affect ability to absorb

heat

Note: Do this activity with the supervision of your parent or guardian.

Materials: one white crayon, one black crayon and a sheet of bond paper.

Procedure:

1. Get the two crayons, one colored black and the other white.

2. Put the white crayon on the left side of the bond paper and the black crayon

on the right side of the bond paper.

Place them under the sun for an hour.

3. Observe how crayons absorb heat from the sun.

Questions:

1. Describe the appearance of the canyons before putting them under the sun.
2. Which crayon melted faster, the black crayon or the white crayon?
3. Why do you think the black crayon melted faster than the white crayon?
4. Which color of the crayon absorbed more heat? Why?

Reminder, go to this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nv8whXqr4sQ for

guidance and information.

Dark colors absorb a lot more heat than lighter ones because they
absorb more light energy.

4
Activity 2: What Am I?
Directions: Complete the table by identifying what kind of material is used for each

given object. Then state whether it has the ability to block, absorb, or transmit light.

Look at the given example:

Activity 3: Let Your Light Shine!

 Transparent materials allow all light to pass through. It means that we

can clearly see through them.

 Translucent materials allow some light to pass through. It means that we

can partially see through them.

 Opaque materials do not allow light to pass through. It means that we

cannot see through them.

Objective: Investigate if the light from the flashlight will shine or pass through the
materials.
Note: Do this activity with the supervision of your parent or guardian.

Material: one flashlight, one book, eyeglass, and tissue paper 5

Procedure:
1. Turn on the flashlight and hold each object in front of the flashlight.
2. Make a prediction on whether the light from the flashlight will pass through
the given objects or not.
3. Then write your actual observation for each object.

Activity 4: It is Summertime!
Direction: Read the situation and answer it briefly by applying your knowledge
about light transmission.

It is summertime. Your mother told you to buy something at the store but it is

really hot outside. What color of umbrella are you going to use to lessen or to protect

you from the heat? Is it a light color or a dark color? Explain in two –three sentences.

Remember

 Light, or Visible Light, commonly refers to as electromagnetic radiation that can

be detected by the human eye. Light is a form of energy that enables us to see

all the things around us. The main source of light on tEarth is the sun. Light can

transmit in different materials.

 Different colors have different wavelengths. Wavelengths absorb or reflects light

differently. Black crayon reflects all wavelengths and convert it into heat. White

color crayon reflects all wavelengths. It does not convert to heat and the

temperature does not change.

 Black is the ultimate heat absorber. It absorbs all light on the visual spectrum,

creating a void of light. As a result of absorbing all light wavelengths, black is the

hottest possible color. White is the opposite. White light is the sum of all

wavelengths, so when some people view a white object, they are really viewing

all visible light hitting the object's surface and reflecting. Some heat is still

absorbed based on the nature of the object's material, but minimal additional

heat is absorbed, making white the coolest possible color.

 Transmission refers to the passing of light through some materials.

 Transparent materials allow all light to pass through them. Clear plastic and

glass windows are examples of transparent materials.

 Translucent materials allow some light to pass through them. Stained glasses

and frosted windows are examples of translucent materials.

 Opaque materials do not allow light to pass through them.
