Third Grading-Module__
Relate the ability of the material to block, absorb or transmit light to its use

WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

Imagine the world without light. We will not be able to see. Without
it, we will not be able to determine different shapes and colors. Without
light, plants cannot live as they use sunlight to make food and to grow.
Without light, animals cannot survive.

In short, without light, life would not be possible

In this Module, you will be able to relate the ability of the materials to block,
absorb or transmit light to its use. S5FE-llle-5

Brief Discussion in Activity 1:

What is the nature of Light?

Light is the visible portion of the
electromagnetic spectrum that enables us
to see things around and appreciate the
beauty of the world (Fig 1.1).
In 1666, Isaac Newton proposed
the corpuscular theory or the particle
theory of light. According to this theory,
light consists of corpuscles or particles Fig 1.1 The sun is the primary source of
light and energy on earth
shooting out like tiny bullets from a source
and travels in straight line through space.
How does light behave?
Lights have different behavior as it strikes in different materials. It depends
upon the materials used.
How does light transmit?
Let us consider the plastic wrap in our activity (Figure 1.2). When light strikes
to plastic wrap it allows light to transmit
easily. We called this substance as
transparent. Transparent objects allow
light to travel through them. Materials like
computer screen, water, and clear glass
are called transparent. When light
encounters transparent materials, almost
Fig 1.2 Light can pass through in plastic wrap
all of it passes directly through them.
Glass, for example, is transparent to all
visible light. The color of a transparent object depends on the color of light it
transmits. If green passes through a transparent object, the emerging light is green.
Uses of transparent objects: clear glasses are used in windows, lenses, lamps and
car windscreens.

How does light absorb and transmit?

Translucent materials allow some light to travel through them. Materials like
frosted glass, stained glass, colored plastic bottles and colored balloon are called
translucent.

Based from our activity, when the
light strikes a blue tissue paper, only some
of the light passes through them (Fig 1.3).
The light partially absorbs and partially
transmit through the materials. It changes
direction many times and light are
scattered as it passes through. Therefore,
Fig 1.3 Partially light can pass through in blue
we cannot see clearly through them.
tissue paper
Objects on the other side of a translucent
object appear fuzzy and unclear.
Uses of translucent materials: tracing paper is used in class; tinted glass is
used in cars; frosted glass is used in Church windows and houses.

How does light block?

In Figure 1.4, When the light falls on
Fig 1.4 No light can pass through in cardboard
opaque object none of it passes through most material.
of the light is either reflected by the object or
absorb and converted to heat. Opaque
objects block light from traveling through
them. It is important to note that the light
cannot transmit because some of the light is
absorbed and reflected by the cardboard. Fig. 1.4 No light can pass through in cardboard.

Cardboard is considered opaque material

that block the light to pass through.
Examples of opaque materials: cloth, stones, books, dark plastics, bricks,
umbrella, apple. Uses of opaque materials: walls and roofs of our houses

There are many awesome things that you can create using light. You can create
your own INDOOR RAINBOW!

How is indoor rainbow formed in our activity?

The mirror reflects light that passes back

through the water, travelling at an angle.
The water bends, or refracts, the light. As
the light bends. It separates into the colors
of the rainbow… red, orange, yellow, green,
blue, indigo and violet.

Terms to Remember:
absorb: to take in or soak up (energy or liquid or other substance) by
chemical action.
transmit: to allow passage of radio waves through the atmosphere.
block: to obstruct something; prevent or hinder.

 Discuss the Science Fact File for additional information

 Isaac Newton was born on December 25, 1642. A
British physicist and mathematician, he became one of
the most brilliant scientists of all time.
 His contribution in the field of optics were the copular
theory of light, his studies on refraction of light, the
discovery that white light is a mixture of colors, and the
interference of colors in thin films.

“Your family lived in

Baguio City during the
Christmas season, your
father put cellophane or
tinfoil on your window?
Explain why he would do
this?”
