Lesson
RELATIONS
1

What I Need To Know

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
o define a relation;
o represent a relation in four ways: a table, a mapping, a rule and a
graph;
o identify a kind of relation; and
o list the domain and range of a relation.

What’s In

Let’s start the lesson by looking at the relationship between two things or
quantities. As you go through this lesson, think about this question: How are the
quantities related to each other?

Activity 2.1
Description: This activity will enable you to write ordered pairs. Out of this activity,
you can describe the relation of an object to its common name.
Directions : Group the following objects in such a way that they have common
properties / characteristics.

fork liquid eraser grater

pencil knife iPod
laptop ballpen Pot
digital camera table cellphone
ladle notebook paper

KITCHEN SCHOOL GADGETS

UTENSILS SUPPLIES

Questions:
1. How many objects can be found in each column?
_________________________________________________________________

2. How did you classify the objects?

_________________________________________________________________

3. Based on the coordinates you have formulated, is there a repetition of the

first coordinates? What about the second coordinates?
_________________________________________________________________

3
Activity 2.2
Description: Given a diagram, you will be able to learn how to make a set of ordered
pairs.
Directions : Describe the mapping diagram below by writing the set of ordered
pairs. The first two coordinates are done for you.

Set of ordered pairs: narra

flower
{(narra , tree), (tulip, flower), tulip
(______,______), (______,______), orchid
(______,______), (______,______)} mahogany
rose
tree
apricot

How did you make set of ordered pairs? How many elements are there in the
set of ordered pairs you have made? What elements belong to the first set? Second
set? Does the set of ordered pairs represent a relation? How is a relation represented?
In this module, you will learn and understand the key concepts of
Representation of Relations and Functions. You will also understand how a relation
and a function are represented.

What’s New

Each of us is the son or daughter of our father and mother. The pair consisting
of a son or daughter and his or her mother is called a relation. A relation is simply
a set of ordered pairs relating the elements of another set. Consider the following
relations below:
1. Mother-Children Relation

In the diagram, we can write the

Sandy relation using the ordered pairs :
Chariss {(Mother, Sandy), (Mother, Chariss),
Vellen (Mother, Vellen), (Mother, Grethel),
Mother
Grethel (Mother, Jon), (Mother, Wilma)}. This
Jon indicates one mother corresponds to six
Wilma children.

2. x-y Relation

The relation is between x and y and the

1
correspondence is given by the relation:
1 2 {(1, 1), (1, 3), (2, 2), (2, 4)}.
2 3
4

4
Representations of Relations
1. Table – clearly describes the behavior of the value of y as the value of x changes.
Below is an example of a table of values presented vertically and
horizontally.

Vertical Horizontal

x y x -2 -1 0 1 2
-2 -4 y -4 -2 0 2 4
-1 -2
0 0
1 2
2 4

2. Rule - is where you express the dependent variable, y, in terms of the independent
variable, x. In the tabular example above, notice that the value of y is twice
the value of x. In other words, this can be described by the equation
y = 2x, where x is an integer from -2 to 2.

3. Mapping Diagram 4. Graphing

- it shows how the elements are - it illustrates the relationship of
paired and consists of two parallel the values of x and y.
columns. The first column
represents the domain and the
other column for its range.

x y
-2 -4
-1 -2
0 0
1 2
2 4

The relations above represented in different ways can also be expressed in

set of ordered pairs:
{(-2,-4), (-1,-2), (0,0), (1,2), (2,4)} , where
Domain: {-2, -1, 0, 1, 2}
Range: {-4, -2, 0, 2, 4}

A relation is any set of ordered pairs (x , y). It can be expressed

using a table, rule, mapping, and graph. The set of all first coordinates is
called the domain of the relation. The set of all second coordinates is
called the range of the relation.

5
What is It

In real life situations, it is easy to see correspondences between elements of

the two sets. Correspondence may be classified as one-to-one, many-to-one, one-to-
many, or many-to-many. Consider the mapping below:

1. One-to-One Correspondence 2. Many-to-One Correspondence

– if every element in the domain – if any two or more elements of
is mapped to a unique element the domain are mapped to the
in the range. same element in the range.

3. One-to-Many Correspondence 4. Many-to-Many Correspondence

The correspondence above can be written in ordered pairs:

1. {(1, 5),(2, 10), (3, 15), (4, 20)}
2. {(Mary, 1), (Susan, 3), (Ken, 3), (Andrew, 3)}
3. {(0, 10), (0, 20), (0, 30), (0, 40), (0, 50)}
4. {(1, 4), (2, 4), (3, 5), (3, 6)}

The correspondence above are all relations but Correspondence 1 & 2 are
special relations called functions since no two ordered pairs have the same first
coordinate. This also suggest that One-to-One and Many-to-One Correspondence are
said to be functions too.

6
Illustrative Example:
Given the graph below, complete the set of ordered pairs, and the table of values
and then draw the mapping and generate the rule.

Set of Ordered Pairs:

{(0, 6), (1, 5), ( __, __ ), ( __, __ ), ( __, __ ),
( __, __ ), ( __, __ )}

Table:
x 0 1 2 3 4 5 6

Answers:
Set of Ordered Pairs: {(0, 6), (1, 5), (2, 4), (3, 3), (4, 2), (5, 1), (6, 0)}
Table :
x 0 1 2 3 4 5 6
y 6 5 4 3 2 1 0

Mapping: Rule:

What I Need to Remember

 A function is a special type of relation in which every element

in the domain is mapped to exactly one element in the range.
Thus, a set of ordered pairs is a function if no two distinct
ordered pairs have equal elements in the abscissas.
 A relation is any set of ordered pairs (x, y). It can be expressed
using a table, rule, mapping, and graphing. The set of all first
coordinates is called the domain of the relation. The set of all
second coordinates is called the range of the relation.
 All functions are relations but not all relations are functions.

Lesson
FUNCTIONS
2

What I Need To Know

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
o define a function;
o determine a function from a mere relation;
o determine whether a relation is a function through the vertical line
test; and
o determine dependent and independent variables.

What’s In

Determine which of one of these is the graph of a function. Illustration A

or B? How do you recognize if it’s a function or a mere relation? How is function
represented in graphs?

A B

In this lesson, you will discover a technique in determining the graph of a

relation and a function. Are you excited to learn more about these? You will find
out as you go through the lessons. Have fun learning!

9
What’s New

How do you know that a graph represents a function? What are vertical
lines? Consider the following examples below to understand about the Vertical Line
Test and how it is very helpful in determining graph of functions.

What is It

.
The Vertical Line Test
If a vertical line crosses the graph of a relation in more than one
point, the relation cannot be a function. If no vertical line crosses the graph
in more than one point, then the graph is a graph of a function.

Illustrative Examples:
State whether each of the following graphs represents a function.
1. 2. 3.

Solution:
1. Using the Vertical Line Test, 2. Using the Vertical Line Test,
we see that the graph is a we see that the graph is not a
graph of a function since no graph of a function since
vertical line crosses in more more than one point
than one point. touches the vertical line.

10
3. Using the Vertical Line Test, we see that the graph
is not a graph of a function since more than one
point touches the vertical line. The arrow also
signifies that the graph continues so it touches
more than one point.

Dependent and Independent Variables

In an equation where y is expressed in terms of x, the variable x is
considered the independent variable because any value could be assigned
to it. However, the variable y is the dependent variable because its value
depends on the value of x.

Illustrative Examples:
Classify the variables as independent or dependent variable.
1. time and salary Answer
Independent variable : time
Dependent variable : salary
2. the distance covered and the volume of the gasoline
Independent variable : the volume of the gasoline
Dependent variable : the distance covered
3. height of a plant to the number of months grown
Independent variable : the number of months grown
Dependent variable : height of a plant
4. y = 2x + 1
Independent variable : x
Dependent variable : y

11
What’s More

NOW IT’S YOUR TURN!

Activity 2.4
A. State whether each of the following graphs represents a function or not function.
1. 2. 3.

4. 5.

B. Identify the independent and dependent variable from each of the following.
1. The amount of memory on DVD determines how many songs you can
download to it.
Independent variable : _________________________
Dependent variable : _________________________
2. The number of hours boiling and the number of ounces of water in the pot.
Independent variable : _________________________
Dependent variable : _________________________
3. Higher education typically leads to higher income.
Independent variable : _________________________
Dependent variable : _________________________
4. Drinking energy drinks makes people more aggressive.
Independent variable : _________________________
Dependent variable : _________________________
5. y = -2x

x -2 -1 0 1 2
y 4 2

Independent variable : _________________________

Dependent variable : _________________________

12
What I Need to Remember

 The Vertical Line Test - is used to determine whether the

graph is a function or not. If any vertical line drawn
through the graph intersects the graph in exactly one
point, then the graph represents a function.
 Independent Variable – is a variable which can be assigned
any permissible value without any restriction imposed by
any other variable. It is also considered as a variable that
can stand on its own.
 Dependent Variable – is a variable in an expression or a
statement that has its value determined by the choice of
value/s of other variable/s.

What I Can Do

A. Given the set of ordered pairs, do the following.

a. mapping
b. table
c. graph
1. {(0, 0), (1, -1), (1, 1), (4, -2), (4, 2)}
2. {(10, 0), (10, 2), (10, 4), (10, 6), (10, 8)}

B. Analysis:
In Cebu City, the jeepney fare for the 1st 4 km is Php10 and an additional
Php 3 is charged for every kilometer thereafter. Make a table and graph
to represent this particular fare scheme in Cebu City.
