CHARLIE’S CANDIES
Direction: Read and analyze the problem below. Solve for
what is asked by answering the guide questions that follows.

Situation: Charlie bought 12 candies and pay P20.00 for it.

Orange flavored candies cost P1.00 each and mint candies cost
P2.00 each, given the system of linear equations below find
the number of orange flavored candies and mint candies he
bought.

Solving Systems of Linear Equations in Two Variables by
SUBSTITUTION
When using the Substitution method, we
use the fact that if two expressions y
and x are of equal value then x may
replace y or vice versa in another
expression without changing the value
of the expression

7
Solving Systems of Linear Equations in Two Variables by
SUBSTITUTION

Step 1: Solve an equation for one variable.

Equation 2 is already
solve for y in terms of x

8
Step 2: Substitute the value for y in equation
1 to solve for x .

9
Step 3: To find the value of y, substitute the value
of x obtained in Step 2 in either of the original
equations. For example, we use the equation 2
since y is already expressed in terms of x.

Therefore, the ordered pair obtained is (2, 1)

10
Step 4: Check if the obtained value of x and y in
Step 3 satisfies both equation 1 and equation 2.

For equation 1: For equation 2

x+y=3 y=x-1
2+1=3 1=2-1
3=3 1=1

Solving System of Linear Equations in two Variables by
ELIMINATION
 The objective of this method is to eliminate one of the
variables in the equation to find the value of the other
variable. This can be done by addition or subtraction.
 However, in some instances, addition and subtraction cannot
be directly performed to eliminate either of the variables.
Hence, either one or both equations in the system has to be
multiplied first with a number in order to obtain numerical
coefficients of one variable which are opposites or additive
inverse. 14
Example 1: Solve the systems of linear equation by
elimination:

Step 1: Write the equations in the standard form If the

given equations are already in standard form, proceed to
step 2.

Step 2: Add or Subtract the equations to eliminate one

variable, and then solve for the value of the other variable.
15
Step 3: Substitute the value of x in either of the equation
and solve for the value of y.

Step 4: Check using the ordered pair (2, 1), substitute the
value of x and y to both equation 1 and equation 2.

Example 2: Solve the systems of linear equation by

elimination:
