Monolingual Forms of Education for Bilinguals

1. Mainstreaming/Submersion is the practice of integrating students with special
needs or disabilities into regular classrooms, promoting inclusive education and
providing necessary support for their academic and social development
alongside their typically developing peers.
2. Mainstreaming/Submersion with Withdrawal Classes is an educational
approach where students with special needs or disabilities primarily participate
in regular classrooms but periodically receive additional specialized instruction
in separate withdrawal classes.
3. A segregationist is an advocate or supporter of the policy or practice of
segregating individuals or groups based on characteristics such as race,
ethnicity, or other factors, often leading to the unequal treatment and
opportunities for those affected.

Weak Forms of Bilingual Education for Bilinguals

1. Monolingual forms of education for bilinguals refer to educational approaches
that primarily focus on instruction in only one language, disregarding the
bilingualism of the students and potentially neglecting the development and
use of their second language.
2. Transitional, in the context of education, refers to an instructional approach or
program designed to facilitate the gradual shift or progression from one
educational stage or language proficiency level to another, providing support
and scaffolding during the transition process.
3. In the context of bilingual education, a separatist approach refers to an
instructional model that advocates for the complete separation of languages,
where each language is taught in isolation without fostering integration or
bilingual proficiency.

Strong Forms of Bilingual Education Programs

1. An immersion program in bilingual education is an instructional approach
where students are fully immersed in a second language, with the majority
or all their academic subjects taught in that language to facilitate language
acquisition and bilingual proficiency.
2. Maintenance/Heritage Language in bilingual education refers to the
continued instruction and preservation of a student's native language,
culture, and traditions within an educational setting that values and supports
their heritage language alongside the dominant language of instruction.
3. Two-Way/Dual Language in bilingual education refers to an instructional
model that brings together students from different language backgrounds,
providing instruction in both languages and fostering bilingualism, biliteracy,
and cross-cultural understanding among all participants.
4. Mainstream Bilingual in bilingual education refers to an instructional
approach where bilingual students receive instruction in both their native
language and the dominant language, aiming to integrate them seamlessly
into mainstream classrooms while developing proficiency in both
languages.
