Lab no.: Title : Location : Objective: Apparatus: BS01 Characteristics of Protective Devices Electrical Energy Utilization Laboratory Rm. LG203 CYC Building To study the tripping characteristics of miniature circuit breaker, residual circuit breaker, and IDMT Earth Fault Relay. AVO Protective Device Tester - Model SR-90 MCBs & RCDs- of different rating and different type IDMT Earth Fault Relay

Introduction: Miniature circuit breaker (mcb), residual circuit breaker (rcb), and IDMT Earth Fault Relay are covered by British Standards. Each standard lays down rigorous tests for the manufacturer, and only after compliance with these tests is the equipment permitted to be sold as conforming with BS . . . . For the characteristics, the performance specification is given in terms of gates on the time v current characteristic. In general, the test laid down in a particular standard relate closely to the way in which the overcurrent device is to be applied in practice, and this is generally covered by the supply rules and IEE wiring regulations. Whilst it is time consuming and sometimes very expensive to carry out all the tests required by a standard, it is possible to carry out those tests with simple laboratory test equipment. Procedures:
1.

Get familiar with the AVO tester by reading carefully the operation instruction/manual provided.

2. According to the AVO manual, adjust the operation settings of AVO tester as follows: Control a) Power On/Off b) Initiate Control c) Horn/Monitor Switch d) AC Control Knob e) DC Ammeter Range Switch Position On Maint. Either position 0 5A

f) AC Output Select Switch g) AC Ammeter Range Switch h) AC Adjust Knob i) Voltmeter Range Switch j) AC Initiate Switch k) Auxiliary Adjust Control Knob l) Aux. Initiate Switch m)Switch n) Normal/Dropout Switch o) Current Terminal p) Timer q) Timer control

Figure: Front Panel of the AVO tester - SR-90 3. Take note of all specifications of MCBs under test. 4. Refer to the above instruction manual provided, make sure you understand all function of all controls, the principle of the test and the circuit connections. 5. After setting the above equipment, connect the MCB to be tested (referring to Fig.1). Adjust the ac current to the MCB and record the tripping time. Repeat the above procedures 3 or 4 times to obtain a suitable average reading.

6. Repeat the above procedures for different current settings of reasonable range as related to the rating and type of the MCB. Fill in the results into Data Form, Part (a). 7. Repeat similar process as above for the RCD, for both connection 1 and 2 (shown in Fig.2 and Fig.3) to test the tripping of characteristics of RCDs on leakage current. Record the results into Data Form, Part (b). 8. Connect the IDMT according to Fig.4. Referring to Data Form Part c), select the Time Multiplier Setting, Current Plug Setting, and Injected Current. Record the operating time for each setting. Repeat the procedures 3 or 4 times to obtain a suitable average reading. Fill in the Data From, Part (c). Reports:
1.

Include data on the devices under test and main specifications of all the test equipment. For Part (a), state important observations in respect of protective device operations. Analyze the data in each part. Then give your comment and conclusion. Draw the current-time Characteristic of the MCB. Find out its type number. For Part (b), state important observations in respect of protective device operations. Analyze the data in each part. Then give your comment and conclusion. For Part (a), state important observations in respect of protective device operations. Analyze the data in each part. Then give your comment and conclusion. Use the data to produce a current-time Characteristic of the relay, and verify whether the time multiplier works correctly.
