CONTENT STANDARDS:

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
The learner independently performs maintenance of carpentry tools and based
on industry standards.

 Repair defective tools.
 Conduct preventive maintenance of carpentry tools.

2.1 CHECK CONDITIONS OF TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:


a. Identify the different tools and equipment;
b. Classify the different tools and equipment;
c. Inspect conditions of tools and equipment; and
d. Perform preventive measures in maintaining tools and equipment.

INTRODUCTION

Before any carpentry work or preventive maintenance of tools and


equipment is done, defective tools must be segregated first. Inspecting
tools must be conducted regularly and, in doing so, try to look for any
damage or defect in the tool or its parts to avoid any incident while
performing task in carpentry.

Procedure in Segregating and Labeling Non-functional Tools and Equipment

1. Conduct an inventory of tools and equipment.


2. Record the number of non-functional tools and equipment.
3. Segregate tools that are serviceable or unserviceable.
4. Report the number of tools and equipment that are non-functional but subject
for repair.
5. Label tools and equipment which are condemnable.
6. Return tools and equipment in the tool cabinet as per operating procedures.

ACTIVITY: Make a list of tools/ equipment available in your house used


for carpentry. Identify the tools/equipment and label if it is functional or
not functional. (You can create your own inventory list for this activity.)

Carpentry tools may be hardy tools but they are


not indestructible. Tools can wear out through
time and improper use so it is necessary to
inspect the tools before using them.

2.2 BASIC PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE OF TOOLS

Taking good care of carpentry tools and equipment is beneficial. Using


well=maintained tools and equipment will make your carpentry works- whether they be
home improvement or repairs- easier, safe and successful. Caring for your carpentry
tools will also save you extra cost from buying new ones because you will be able to
use these tools and equipment for a very long span of time.

Here are some useful tips on how you can maintain carpentry tools and equipment. We
have to categorized them into two types: Hand tools and Power tools.

Maintaining Hand Tools

1. Clean your carpentry tools.


 Clean carpentry tools regularly after every use before returning them to storage.
Make sure tools are free from dust, grease and debris before putting them into
the tool kits or storage.
 Use a rag or an old towel to wipe them. After wiping, try to use an all-purpose oil
to lubricate tools with adjustable parts.
 Lightly spray other metal tool parts, like screwdrivers and drill bits. Wipe away
any excess oil with a rag before keeping in the storage to help fight corrosion
and rust.
 Try to avoid getting oil on handles since making the handle greasy will not give
you a good grip in using tools.

2. Repair or Replace Defective tools.


 Repair tools that show signs of damage. Only after determining that the tools are
beyond repair that you can take the second option of replacing the tool itself.
 There should be a space in your carpentry shop, like worktable, where you can
inspect your tools and perform necessary maintenance task.

3. Segregate your carpentry tools.


 Segregate and label the non-functional tools and equipment. This is to
avoid using tools which are no longer functioning to avoid injury in the
process. Identify and label those that are serviceable from those which
are unserviceable.
 Put the non-functional tools in a separate drawer or cabinet

4. Do not use carpentry tools inappropriately.


 Each tool is designed specifically for a particular task. Using a tool
inappropriately for a task may increase the risk of injury to yourself and to
others. Doing so will cause damage to the tool.

5. Care for your carpentry tools.


 Try to wear heavy gloves if you will be cleaning or removing rust from
cutting tool.
 Bladed tools need to be sharpened as needed. Hone and maintain the
sharp edge of all cutting tools with a medium-grit whetstone.
 There are a number of rust removers available should your tools show
signs of rust. Also. wear safety goggles if you will be using a wire brush to
remove rust.
 Dry tools thorough with a clean, dry rag after cleaning to wipe away
excess oil or water before storing.

6. Store carpentry tools properly.


 Hand tools should be stored properly. You can use a toolbox, a storage
container, shelving unit, or a combination of all to keep carpentry tools
protected and well-maintained.
 Storage units should be kept dry and not exposed to moisture or
temperature changes.
 You can also use a small tool bag for the tools you use often. The rest of
your tool arsenal can be placed in the main toolbox or shelf.

Maintaining Power Tools

Just as hand tools need maintenance, so do power tools. Electric drill, jigsaw,
sander, circular saw, and router also need routine maintenance just like hand tools. Due
to its mechanical and electrical parts, a power tool is more susceptible to malfunction
caused by poor maintenance, dust and accumulate of debris.

Here are some useful tips on how you can clean and properly store power tools:

1. Keep power tools clean.


 Dust and dirt bring a grinding halt to power tools if not checked or
inspected over a period of time.
 Deep clean power tools periodically by using a damp cloth. For other hard
to clean areas, use lightly oiled cotton swabs or other slender tools.
 Using an air compressor to blow air into vents and crevices is the best
way to remove dirt and dust from inside power tools.

 Replace the filters as specified in the manufacturer’s instructions.

2. Inspect for wear or damage.


 Occasionally inspect each power tool any signs of wear and damage,
particularly the power cord.
 If you noticed frayed insulation or exposed wires, call a professional who
knows how to repair the cord or replace it immediately, unless you have
the expertise to do these yourself.
 A damaged power cord is potential cause of injury leading to electric
shock or fire.
 Inspect the cord’s prongs to check if these are bent or loose.
 Remember to always unplug electric before inspecting them.

3. Lubricate moving parts.


 Always keep the moving parts of a power tool lubricated for optimum
performance. Doing this keeps the mechanics of a power tool to run
smoothly. It also decreases the chance of developing rust. Although a
common machine oil will do, consult the power tool’s manual to see if any
specific type or brand of oil recommend by the manufacturer to use in
lubricating the moving parts of the power tool.

4. Keep batteries in good condition.


 There are cordless power tools which are battery-operated. These
portable and convenient to use and are very popular among contractors
and homeowners. To keep these types of power tools working efficiently
and effectively, their batteries should be in good condition at all times.
 Batteries remain working at peak level by fully charging and then fully
discharging their power once every couple of weeks.
 Use batteries once every two weeks. Do not let the batteries sit unused
for extended periods of time,
 Take good care of batteries by cleaning contacts using cotton swabs and
alcohol.
 Keep them in dry. clean storage if you will not be using them for a while.
 Batteries should be keep away from excessive heat.

5. Store power tools properly.


 Keep power tools protected from dust, moisture and other adverse
conditions. Keep them properly in storage after use. Place the power tool
in its original casing or store drawers or tool chests. Make sure that the
storage is dry and moderately controlled temperature. Excessive heat and
cold can damage power tools.

Whether it be hand or power tools, try to keep instruction manuals with you.
These manuals were provided by the manufacturer so that you can safely and
effectively use or operate your tools. Manual also have valuable information on how to
care for tool, where to find replacement parts, and other important information. Keep
instruction manual safe in a tool box drawer, cabinet, or shelf so that these are readily
available when you need them.

Lubrication

Lubricants are substances used to reduce friction between two moving surfaces.
This process or action of applying a substance, such as oil or grease, to an engine or
component so as to minimize friction and allow smooth movement is known as
lubrication. Tools undergo the process of lubrication in order to maintain optimal use of
carpentry tools and equipment.

Characteristics of a Good Lubricant

1. It should have a high boiling point.


2. It should have a low freezing point.
3. It should have a viscosity index.
4. It should be thermally stable.
5. It should be able to prevent corrosion.
6. It should have a high resistance to oxidation.

Types of Lubricants

1. Anti-rust Lubricant Spray
