Quiz # 3 Torsion

NAME: Date: Score:_________

Crs.Yr & Sec: Instructor: Engr. Edmundo C. dela Cruz

Instruction: Analyze and solve each problem. Write your final answers on answer sheet provided.

Problem # 1: A torque of 4730 kN-m is applied to the cross-section shown. Assume thickness = 10 mm.
Calculate the dimension “r” that can be used in cases ( a ) and ( b ) so that the allowable shearing stress is 125
MPa. ( 10 pts )

Problem # 2: The plate shown is fastened to the fixed member by eight 16-mm diameter rivets. Compute the
polar moment of inertia, J. Determine the value of the loads P so that the maximum shearing stress in any rivet
does not exceed 80 MPa. If P = 8200 N, what is the maximum and minimum shearing stress developed in the
rivet. ( 20 pts )
Problem # 3: The compound shaft consists of solid steel and bronze shafts and hollow aluminum shaft ( D =
2.25” and d = 0.90” ). It is subjected to two torques as shown in the figure. The moduli of rigidity for steel,
aluminum, and bronze are 12 x 106 psi, 4 x 106 psi, and 6 x 106 psi, respectively. Determine the shearing stress
developed in each material. Also, calculate the angle of twist incurred by the aluminum shaft. ( 20 pts )

Problem # 4: The aluminum shaft consists of two segments AB and BC ( G = 27 GPa ). Shaft AB is a solid shaft
with a diameter of 60 mm. Shaft BC is a hollow shaft with an outside diameter of 60 mm and an inside diameter
d2. If the total angular deformation from A to C is not to exceed 4.300, determine the value of d2. Express the
answer to the nearest even number. Using the value of d2, calculate the amount of shear stress developed in
segment BC. ( 10 pts )

Problem # 5: A homogeneous 62-kg block is suspended by three springs whose lower ends were originally at the
same level. The light steel spring made of 12-mm diameter wire consists of 22 turns on a mean diameter of 120
mm with G = 83 GPa. The light aluminum spring made of 16-mm diameter wire consists of 22 turns on a mean
diameter of 120 mm with G = 70 GPa. The light bronze spring made of 20-mm diameter wire consists of 44 turns
on a mean diameter of 200 mm with G = 42 GPa. Determine the shearing stress developed in each wire. Also,
compute for the deflection sustained by the bronze spring. ( 20 pts )
Problem # 6: The rod weighs 22 lb/ ft and has a diameter of 3 in. Determine the torsional stress at points A and
B. ( 10 pts )

Problem # 7: The steel shaft DF consists of three concentric tubes and is supported by smooth bearings at D
and E. It is coupled to a motor at F, which delivers 14 kW of power to the shaft while it is running at 52 rev/ sec.
The gears A, B, and C remove 3 kW, 5 kW, and 6 kW, respectively. The shaft is free to turn in its support
bearings D and F. Determine the shearing stress developed in segments BC and CE. ( 10 pts )
