Abstrak

The increasing demand for powdered milk worldwide has the potential to contribute
to a human health issue known as antibiotic resistance. Currently, research on antibiotic
residue testing is primarily focused on liquid milk, with little attention given to powdered
milk products. Testing for antibiotic residues on farms has proven to be an effective method
for detecting residues in milk from various species. However, there is currently no
commercially available rapid test approved for screening antibiotic residues specifically in
powdered milk products. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effectiveness of IDEXX
Snap tests (IDEXX Laboratories Inc., Westbrook, ME) in detecting antibiotic residues in five
randomly selected commercially available powdered milk products. The study assumes that
the Snap tests will successfully detect the regulated levels of penicillin G, cephapirin, and
tetracycline. The tests were conducted following the manufacturer's specifications, and the
results demonstrated that the Snap tests effectively detected antibiotic residues in all the
tested powdered milk samples without any false-positive or false-negative readings. The
suitability of the tests for powdered milk products and their potential use in monitoring
antibiotic residues in these products were confirmed. These findings suggest that the IDEXX
Snap New Beta-Lactam and New Tetracycline tests could be valuable tools for quickly
examining powdered milk products for antibiotic residues. Further research is needed to
explore their compatibility with other types of powdered milk products, such as infant
formula, and to evaluate the effectiveness of other commercially available screening tests.
