Asking for personal information in job interviews, such as hobbies and marital
status might look irrelevant on the outside, or even thought to be an invasion of
privacy and unethical by some people, but they could prove to be a deciding
1
factor on the nal decision of an employer.
2
In the world we are living today, ever-evolving and highly competitive market for
3
job seekers on one hand and companies trying to get the most out of their
4 5
workforce on the other hand, imposes challenging situations to both employer
and employee, which requires de ning out-of-ordinary criteria to help
employers choosing the best possible employee amongst a large group of
candidates.
Sometimes, the gap between the level of education and the amount of work
6
experience of people applying for jobs are so narrow that leaves employers with
no other choices, compelling them turning to unusual methods and new
7
practices in order to be able to differentiate between resumes and choose the
one who can carry out his/her duties perfectly in line with company’s
requirements.
8 9
personal information are indeed, a window into the life of a person who is going
to be a long-term part of a business. Although providing this type of information
might not be ideal in the eyes of someone who thinks he/she is more than
10 11,12
capable of doing the job, but from employers point of view, it is the minute
details that make the person in question worthy of the position and facilities
that is to be offered.
13
In conclusion, whether if people, who are looking for a job, consider providing
personal information relevant or not, it is going to be an avoidable procedure

given the exponentially rising number of job seekers and I believe more and
14 15
more companies are going to adapt such measures for their own bene ts.

16
Recently an opinion has been forming amongst people about educational
system’s shortcomings which states that students spend a lot of time
17
learning and memorizing facts instead of actually learning practical skills. This
problem is believed to be present in all levels of education, from primary school
to university.
18
The idea has been gaining popularity due to the rise of highly competitive job-
19
market which expects fresh graduates to have unrealistic capabilities. But is it
20
the industry or university who is at fault?
People are realizing that the education system puts too much emphasis on
21
theoretical topics rather than listening to companies and what they actually
need.
22
Students who do not plan on working in academics, do not possess practical
skills to be able to perform their duties when they enter the job market. Not
23
learning practical skills and real-world application of their studies, puts the
young workforce who wish to enter the job market in a dif cult situation. In
24
most cases they have to start working with minimum wage, temporary
25
positions, or even internships working for free and with no job security, until
they have a presentable curriculum vitae that can boast a 2- or 3-year work
experience.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that students learn little to no practical skills
given the amount of time they spend in school and then higher education in
university after that. However, I think this is the rst step in recognizing the
26 27
problem and it is in the right direction if both educational system and job
