10. (a)What is manometer? What is buoyancy? Mention two simple
applications of atmospheric pressure in our daily life. The density of sea
water is 1025 kgm-3. How many times is the pressure at the depth of 3km
under the sea surface greater than the atmospheric pressure. (g=10ms -2,
Patm=1.01 × 105 Pa) (8 marks)
(b)(i) Define heat conduction. What is the thermal conductivity? Express
its unit in the SI system. (ii) Find the first two harmonics which will be
formed in an open organ pipe of length 0.5m. Velocity of sound in air is
340ms-1. Draw also the second harmonic wave form in the pipe. (8 marks)
11. (a)Show that the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of emergence
for a ray passing through a glass slab with parallel sides. A ray of light in
air enters a prism (having an angle 60) from one surface and emerges into
the air form the other surface. The angle of minimum deviation is 39.
Find the angle of incidence when the angle of deviation is minimum and
refractive index of the prism. (8 marks)
(b) What is a real image? The virtual image of an object is formed 12cm
from a lens of focal length 6cm. Find the distance between the object and
the lens. How far must the object moved form the initial position to
obtain a real image of the same size as the virtual image obtained
previously. (8 marks)
12. (a) Define electric potential at a point in an electric field. If the electric
field intensity at a point in an electric field is zero, is the electric potential
at that point necessarily zero? Explain.
Two parallel metal plates are 4cm apart. If the force on an electron
between the plates is 2.0 × 10-14N, what is the potential difference
between them? (e=1.6 × 10-19C) (8 marks)
(b) Define the electromotive force of a source before its terminals are
connected to an external circuit. When two 6V batteries, having the same
internal resistance and connected in series are connected to a 4Ω resistor,
the current in the circuit is 1.5A. When these batteries are in parallel, a
current of 1A flows through when connected to another resistor. Find the
resistance of the resistor. (8 marks)
13. (a) What electrical device is a capacitor? Where are they used? Define
capacitance. What is the SI unit of the capacitance? The area of each plate
of a parallel-plate capacitor is 2 m2 and the distance between two plates is
4mm. If the potential difference between the plates is 12000V and the
dielectric constant of the material inserted between them is 3, find (i) the
capacitance of the parallel-plate capacitor and (ii) the energy stored by
the capacitor. (ᵋ=8.85 × 10-12 C2N-1m-2) (8 marks)
(b) State Joule’s law of electricity and heat. Write down the relation
between electrical energy and heat energy. A battery of e.m.f 12V and an
internal resistance of 1 are connected in series with resistors of
resistances 3Ω and 2Ω. Calculate the rate of production of heat in the
battery. (J=4.2 Jcal-1) (8 marks)
14. (a) What is vacuum diode? What is p-n junction diode? Show how four
NAND gates can be connected to form as a NOR gate. Construct a stage-
by-stage truth table to confirm its actions? (8 marks)
(b) What is radioactivity? Define the half-life of a radioactive substance.
What are radioisotopes? Draw the Thomson’s atom. Draw the Alpha
scattering according to Thomson’s and Rutherford’s atomic models. (8
marks)
15. (a) Explain the nuclear reaction. Write a short note on a nuclear reactor.
Why is a moderator needed in a nuclear reactor? Explain radiotherapy? (8
marks)
(b) State Coulomb’s law. Write down Coulomb’s law equation in vector
form and explain the symbols used. Find the force between two charges
of +2C and -3C when they are 3cm apart. (8 marks)

15.(a) What is an electromagnet? Why is a compass needle placed near a
current-carrying wire deflected? When two 6V batteries, having the same
internal resistance and connected in series, are connected to a 2Ω resistor,
the current is 2A. When these batteries in parallel, a current of 1.5A flow
through when connected to another resistor. Find the resistance of
resistor. (8 marks)
(b) What factors does the pressure in a liquid depend? An image, which
is five times the size of an object, is to be produced by a convex lens of
power +2D on the same side as the object. How far should the object be
placed from the lens? Draw a ray diagram to show the formation of
image. (8 marks)
