Statement of Contribution
Throughout semester 2, I was tasked with developing an assistive technology that would
benefit and assist the elderly communitive. To complete this task, teams of 3-5 students
were formed. My group consisted of four members, Abel Queipo, Aniket Paul, Saohang Un,
and myself (Nicholas Georgiou). Our team did not allocate roles initially, but throughout the
subject, I personally took responsibility for assigning tasks and ensuring the assessments
were completed on time.

Over the semester, our group collaborated and developed an assistive technology solution
targeting dementia patients. Across the semester, I took it upon myself to ensure that all the
work was completed on and time and to a high standard (please refer to appendix A).
Additional to my management role, I took on the responsibility of setting up documentation
and presentation material (please see to Appendix B). To guarantee that our group’s work
was completed to a high level of completion and to ensure no team member was lost, I
provided copious amounts of feedback which can be demonstrated in Appendix C. The
feedback provided to my team was often constructive and challenging. This was to develop
a high quality of work in each section of the assessment and to allow for the team members
to gain a different perspective on the topic.

Additional to my theoretical contribution, I also took full responsibility on all design

illustrations, designing 3D models, constructing prototypes, and developing digital user
interfaces (please refer to appendix D). The designs were developed to assist in
demonstrating a visual of what our product would look like at the end of production, to
understand how it would operate, and to physically interact with specific components.

Our first assessment as a group was agreeing and signing the team charter, ensuring we
would work as a team and complete the work on time. The second assessment focused on
searching for a solution on a medical topic impacting the elderly community, which the
team had mutually agreed on. During this project, I was responsible and completed the
following tasks:
 User need analysis: Interviewing someone whose father has dementia.
 Potential Solutions: Identifying what solutions are currently out there in the market
or how dementia is presently being treated.
 Converting information to digital data: Collating the data for our decision matrix
and for our brainstorming exercise (Please refer to appendix E).
 Prototype Drawing: Sketches of the prototypes and the digital applications (Please
refer to appendix F).

The second group assessment required the team to pitch the solution idea to an audience
for feedback. As half our team was pitching and the other half were not, my team-member
(Abel) and I completed the bulk of the work. For this assessment, I completed the following
sections of the assessment:
 Presentation Deck
 Solution: This focused on our Dementia Smart Watch and its core features.

As this assessment was broken up into two sections, Abel and I did not contribute to the
presentation deck or speech for the other team members. Instead, for the second
presentation, we took feedback from the audience members who challenged our idea.

For our fourth assessment, the group was tasked with compiling a document that would
focus on the design brief of the solution. The report was to support our solution and
demonstrate what the product could do for a patient with dementia and how it could
improve their quality of life and improve the simplicity for a caretaker. This document also
focused on the marketing impact and manufacturing the product. Overall for this
assessment, I completed the following tasks:
 Documentation Set-up: Ensuring each topic heading had dot points for the other
team members to follow and use when completing their sections.
 Product Design features: Identifying what features the product has and what it can
do.
 Core development requirements: This area focused on core requirements the team
had to ensure was in place for the product to be developed, distributed, and sold
appropriately. This included assembly, manufacture, maintainability, safety,
sustainability, installation, usability and design optimisation.
 Engineering drawings: The engineering drawings illustrated the dimensions for every
hardware component of the watch, via different profiles. This can also be seen in
Appendix D.
 Watch Component parts: This illustration focused on the components of the watch
and what materials they would be made with. To do this, I had to create a 3D model
in Maya. This can also be seen in Appendix D.
 Prototype: The prototype was a physical copy of the solution which was 3D printed. I
was able to achieve this by converting my 3D model into an STL file to prepare for 3D
printing. This can also be seen in Appendix D.
 Digital Interface: As our solution incorporated digital features, I designed the UI for
the majority of the screens the watch could illustrate. This was designed in Adobe
XD. Adobe XD, also allowed me to create an interactive screen to screen layout,
allowing users to see what the watch screen could do. This can also be seen in
Appendix D.

For the final presentation, our team had to present all our findings to an audience and board
for feedback and approval of our project. For this project, I completed the following
components:
 Presentation deck: I was responsible for creating and completing the majority of the
presentation deck.
 Live prototype: For the presentation, I developed a live and working example of one
of the features that the watch would have inside it. This feature was a heart rate
monitor. This was designed with an Arduino board, an LED screen, and a heart rate
sensor. This can be seen in Appendix H.
Project Collaboration Statement
Throughout the development of our product, my activity, input and feedback have been
extensive. To make sure the quality of work that our group was submitting was of high
calibre, I took on the responsibility to make sure the team was prepared with the upcoming
tasks. I was able to complete this by setting up the documentation with dot points for
various sections, answer questions or concerns that the team might have had, and providing
insightful and constructive feedback.

The team began the project development by agreeing to conditions that were stated in a
team charter. It was essential to complete this so the team would feel comfortable voicing
their opinions, agreeing to complete work on time and to a high calibre, and most
importantly enjoy working in the team (Please refer to appendix I). I was determined to
meet as many of the requirements as I could. I took it upon myself to try and complete
these requirements to guarantee my contribution as a team player. I made sure to notify
and apologise the team for the classes I was absent for our class/meeting (Please refer to
appendix J). I made sure to voice my opinion to improve on team
collaboration/communication areas that the team did not succeed in (Please refer to
appendix K). I also made to sure assist the team as much as I could but providing task help
such as extra dot points for each section.
While our team did submit high quality content, it was not a smooth process and there were
many issues areas of concern across team collaboration and task completion. Half our team
encountered team-members that did not complete work on time or lacked in
communicating with the team. As a result of this, the other two team members took on the
responsibility for completing additional work. As this was addressed early on, I attempted
remediate this issue by speaking with the other members and addressing the issue while
also asking what communication platforms would better suit them. This methodology did
not have an impact as the members did not change their attitude or approach to the project
or workload. In an attempt to fix this issue in alternate way, the opportunity to address the
issue was complex due to the team-members not showing up for class or responding to
messages. As a result of this I ensured to reflect this within my SPARKplus ratings and
reviews (Please refer to appendix L). The lack of team contribution did impact the quality of
the work being submitted but it also allowed for my team member and I to learn more
about the project development lifecycle.

While there was a lack of equal contribution to almost every assessment task presented, our
team’s understanding on the product was outstanding. During every presentation, the team
knew how to present the product solution and answer the majority of questions. This was a
result of continuously working on and refining the design solution. Using feedback from
previous presentations, feedback from the tutor, and feedback within the team, every
member was able to understand how the product works and how it was going to positively
impact patients with dementia and the responsibility from their caretakers. The experience
gained not only shaped the features and development of our final product, it also prepared
our team to ask questions for other groups and provide practical feedback to assist in
improving another groups project. This became beneficial, when our team was selected as
project review board for a group presenting their assistive technology on smart shopping
transportation for the elderly community (Please refer to appendix M). Utilising the
experience gained allowed for our team to challenge the idea and ask about the concerns
surround the product such as safety, usability, and marketability. Conclusively, the project
board experience also assisted in the development of the team’s ability to analyse and
approve/disapprove a project based on the pitch provided.

Project Reflection
The overall experience for this project has been insightful and has assisted in the
development of my project development, software, management, and team collaboration
skills. The project has also provided me with the ability to constructively provided feedback
to other groups, assisting them with improving their final product. The significant
component I have been able to take away from this project is the financial and marketability
analysis. Working with a break-even analysis chart has allowed me to gain a better
understanding of a product’s financial projection. This area will allow me to assess future
projects and examine the risk factor for designing and releasing a product to the market.

Team communication and collaboration were additional components that challenged me

and improved during the development of this project. Having two team members who
provided minimal communication and contributed minimal work when asked, challenged
me to complete work to a high quality. Additionally, it allowed me to consider new
approaches to remediate the issue at hand. While most options did not fix the problem, it
allowed me to step up and re-arrange the task delegation for the team. This experience has
also given me insight on how to prepare for a similar situation in future projects.

Overall, my experience for the product solution was positive, and I truly believe this product
would impact patients with dementia and caretakers positively. If the opportunity to re-do
the project presented itself, I would be happy to complete this smartwatch project again. If I
were to complete this project once more, I would make sure to strategies a new approach
to task delegation and completion dates for my team. I would also ensure that the group
participated in a meeting outside of the class meetings. If the team still lacked in
communication, lacked in completing their work on time, and did not show up to meetings, I
would make sure to include someone external into the project to try and assist in fixing the
issues. Despite the lack of team collaboration from some team members, I don’t believe
this project should be re-done.
