THE SEASON OF
PHOTO: KATHRYN GAMBLE; WARDROBE STYLING: LINDSAY BERGER; HAIR: REBECCA M C CUNE; MAKEUP: JACKIE SCHMILLEN

As a Minnesota native who calls Iowa home,

I’m proud to say it: I dig snow. While I don’t
particularly enjoy shoveling it, I’ve always loved
what the fluffy white stuff does for my spirits—
and the wonders it works with the light.
When snow covers the ground, any little beam of sunlight
or moonlight or starlight sets the landscape aglow. Bare
trees, dirty roads, and stubbly gardens shimmer, glisten,
and sparkle beneath their downy coats. Our house feels
cozier and cheerier when it’s brightened by the crisp, cool
light bouncing in from the wintry world. On the coldest
mornings, tapestries of frost spread in jagged whorls and
lacy paisleys over the windows of our unheated front
porch. If that’s not enough to make you believe in elves
and fairies, I’m not sure what will.
The seasons aren’t so distinct everywhere, I realize.
A friend in Atlanta reminded me recently that it’s often
above 50 degrees in Georgia in December. And winter
doesn’t necessarily mean cold (or joy) for all. Still, snow
or not, there’s magic to be had this season. I hope this
issue helps you find some of it—and spread it around.
There’s the sweetness you create with holiday lights,
cookies showered with powdered sugar (page 44),
and the spirit-boosting aromas that waft from your
kitchen (page 38). There’s the time-bending wizardry of
“meanwhile” meals (page 58) that let you write a card,
cuddle with a pet, or pour a glass of wine while dinner finishes itself. There’s the happy ease
of simple wine-pairing parties (page 11) and a holiday menu that flexes for kids of all ages
(page 83). And there’s edible glitter, too (page 18), because sometimes you’ve just gotta bring
your own sparkle.
Here’s wishing you magical moments,
dazzling dishes, and the happiest of holidays!
