These effects can be observed on a rogular basis on military or civilian vehicles and offer an ‘operational ~ but above all realistic ~ visual aspect. The ‘model chosen for this project is the Tamiya's R35 Light infantry battle tank, serving with the French army. This tank intervened in the first period of the Second World War and equipped the mechanised and armoured divisions of the French army in great numbers. One of the peculiarities of the French vehicles of this period of time was undoubtedly the camouflage, inherited from the First World War. As a general rule, it consisted of five different shades such as dark green, light green, sand yellow, dark brown and greyish green. All of them Were applied in spots of difforent sizes, which were both outlined and delimited by-a line of black paint that was painted eapriciously around the perimeter of ‘each of the spots of these ‘colours. Many of the parts in the P-881 kit are shared from previous releases with parts for the newer version Included on separate sprues. One of the more noticeable characteristics of the P-38 (and later variants) were the redesigned engine nacelles that included intercoolers that were previously located in the wing leading edges, Tamiya has perfectly’ captured the complex shapes of the chin scoops with additional cooling inlets on these redesigned nacelles So, without further delay, let's get started! ‘CONSTRUCTION Prior to beginning work on the kit, I made the decision to build a European Theatre of Operations (RTO) aireraft with D-Day invasion stripes. While there were no external differences in terms of Pacific vs. European based aircraft in WWIT, internally the aircraft ‘carried different radio ‘equipment in the cockpit. ‘As luck would have it (and because I can never choose a ld or project”, -a it includes the SCR-271 radio transmitter! receiver equipment used ‘on Pacific based aireratt Since most of this is visible through the rear canopy behind the pilot's seat, I felt it was necessary to make it as accurate as possible ‘and needed to source a replacement SCR-522 radio receiver/transmitter found on ETO aireraft, Eduard, fortunately, produces a resin cockpit upgrade for the another series of P-38 kits which contains all of the necessary components for the SCR-522 radios. (At the time of press, Eduard also now produces an excellent 3D printed cockpit, Which ineludes both types of radio components.) The brass barrels could then be inserted from the outside ‘onee final painting was ‘complete, The nose cone, nose side panels, upper wing leading edge inserts, identification light panel, and lower wings are Eduard Brassin 20 ‘cemented to the centre section next. ‘To finish up assembly of the wings, the ailerons and wingtips are added next along with the inserts for the mounts, The wingtips are of the typical slot and tab arrangement which can sometimes lead to a poor ft resulting in a step, but to ro surprise they fit perfectly and integrated well with the overall wing assembly. The boom structures are essentially: mirrored and contain the ‘main landing gear wells in addition to the oil cooler scoops and radiator fairings aft of the gear wells. The oil cooler was assembled next and inserted into the forward section of the boom (cadly never to be seen again), and the radiator fairings aft of the gear well, follow. Tamiya provides decals representing the ‘mosh on the forward and aft faces of the oil coolers and it’s a perfect solution for any area only visible to the Spying eye of an IPMS judge with a toreh, ‘The next step is where I ran into the one and only issue encountered during. construction — a rather large gap on the outside of both curved radiator fairing sections where they met the underside of the fairing. ‘The srtrame was painted wath Tamiya LPtt Shiver After a serious amount of head scratching, dry fitting, and more head scratching, Teouldn’t determine the cause of the gap, but I did notice that it definitely needed to be closed in order for the air intake cover to fit properly. Rather than apply traditional thin cement and a clamp, I expedited the process by squeezing the cap closed and applying Starbond medium thick black CA glue followed immediately by some CA accelerator. ‘The remaining construction steps include the landing gear, gear doors, pylons and drop tanks, propellors, aft cockpit radio rack, and the mounting of the windscreen and rear canopy. The wheels included in the kit are excellent and needed just a little bit of cleanup in the form of resscribing the tyre tread pattern once assembled. This was accomplished with a fine razor saw and panel line engraver. The underwing pylons were assembled next, and rather than hang drop tanks from them I chose some Eduard Brassin 1,000 1b, bombs to represent the ground attack role the P-38 became adept at after the Normandy invasion. After carefully examining some period photos, 1 determined the pylons required modification in the form of styrene strips on either side to represent the mounting method for bombs; the centre sections of the pylons also needed some careful grinding with a ‘moto-tool to allow the bomb shackles to seat properly With those complete, the bombs themselves were assembled per the Eduard instructions and given some additional texture by stippling them with Mr, Surfacer 500, With the armament squared away, the propellor components were cleaned up next and prepared for painting and assembly. The propellers are integrally moulded to the spinner plate which, at first glance, looks like it may be difficult to paint separately. Fortunately, ‘Some moting visible Motting was created wih using prec masks to estabish tonal ‘aration and ight coats of more L the design of the remaining spinner components overlaps the plate allowing all of the parts to be painted prior to assembly, It's important to label them in some form once assembled as they are ‘counter-rotating (not identical) and could ceasily be mixed up once ‘completed. | accomplished this by scratching a R and Lon the rear of the spinner plates with a seribing needle. Finally, the ‘canopy components were masked using the masking material provided in the kit. While not precut like some manufacturers, the task is pretty simple with a straight ‘edge and a new hobby blade land the masks save huge ‘amounts of time. I deviated from the instructions by ‘mounting the aft cockpit radio rack, pilot seat, and rear eanopy after the basic painting was accomplished. With that, construction was complete, and it was time to prepare the model for painting. 1 were misted on leaving, Panels were masked of and painted with a darker Artiglore panels masked up and airbrushed Masking up forthe Invasion stipes tai for more tonal version 36 July 2023 TMI 393PAINTING AND DECALS ‘The subject aireraft T chose was a P28 from the \d Fighter Squadron, 367th Fighter Group, 9th Air Force operating from a newly constructed airfield near Carentan, France, shortly after the Normandy invasion, Heavily involved in fground-attack missions, the aircraft from the squadron were predominately in bare-metal finish with invasion stripes. I made some elliptical masks using a Silhouette Cameo craft cutter and then airbrushed the openings for the machine jguns and cannon with Tamiya LP-5 Semi-gloss Black, and the forward section of the nose with LP-7 Pure Red, With that, the basic painting of the model was complete. SUB-ASSEMBLIES ‘The various sub-assemblies to include the propellers and spinners, wheels, landing gear, turbochargers, and bombs were painted next. I started with the turbochargers which were first airbrushed with a base coat of Tamiya XF-9 Hull Red and XF-72,1GSDF Browa, This mix was then lightened with Tamiva XP-78 Wooden Deck Tan, and then airbrushed to create highlights and fading. The mix was then lightened fonce more with XP-78 and. airbrushed again over the centres of the highlighted areas to ereate even more contrast. They were then given a heavy wash of Black and Sepia oil paint thinned with mineral spirits and set aside to dry. The bombs were painted next beginning with a base coat of Mr. Color C38 Olive Drab 2, followed by several light coats of hairspray from the ean. I sanded the body’ and added a hit of styrene on the trank as it was too small and leaves a big gap. After smoothing the ‘mould lines and seribing out the panel lines it was time to paint the body. T used Zero Paints Grey Primer and VW Beigegrau (pie 1) with a white roof, After that used Mipa 2K elear-coat for the nice gloss finish ‘While the body was drying, I could start on the interior, chassis and engine. The litte two stroke ‘engine was assembled and fitted into the engine bay. Tadded a few wires for spark plugs ete (pies 2, 3) ‘The chassis needed a good lowering for the new Fujimi RH Cup wheels (pies 4, 5) and it wasn't an easy job. I removed a few parts fand glued some together to make sure the wheels fitted in the lowest position (Pic 6). I needed to modify the exhaust too, as it was the lowest part and didn't fit anymore. After assembling the interior I could fix it to the chassis, So far everything fitted very well, Now the body paint had hardened, noticed there were a few dust spots in the elear-coat that needed to he polished out. I started to sand the body with 3M sanding pads grit #2000 fallowed by #3000 #6000 and #8000. The most spots were now removed, but the paint was now very dull after sanding.
