T
here’s a definite touch of spring in the air as I write this on a bright April morning in the United
Kingdom. Model shows are back, and I can sense a real buzz of excitement around the
hobby. Guideline Publications hosted its own very successful Spring Show at the end of
March in London, and in the first weekend of April we were present at the well-supported
Sword and Lance show in Darlington and the East Midlands Model Show in Hinckley. I also
recently had the opportunity to speak to the guys at the wonderful Plastic Posse podcast. I’d like to
thank John, TJ and Scott for inviting me on the show and it was great to talk to them a little about
Guideline Publications, the state of the magazine publishing business, and chew the proverbial fat
over the state of the hobby in general. It left me enthused for the hobby and I’m really looking
forward to travelling to Hungary at the end of the month for the Moson show and then in the
autumn travelling to the Netherlands for the Scale Model Challenge show. I’ve taken a little bit of
a break from armour modelling (or at least painting as I have several models assembled and
waiting the attention of the airbrush) and have been concentrating on some figure painting
David Grummitt recently. I feel sometimes I need slightly shift my hobby focus, but then something – perhaps a
Managing Editor show attended or an inspirational article in these pages – will bring me right back to armour.
Guideline Publications This month’s MMI has the usual mix of subjects and scales. Our two reference articles look at the
david@guidelinepublications.co.uk armour used in two of the best-known conflicts of the Cold War period. I look at Israeli Centurions
during the 1973 fighting on the Golan Heights, while MP Robinson provides a comprehensive
overview of US artillery in the Vietnam War. To complement the former, Diego Bruzzone
returns with a lovely build of AFV Club’s Shot Kal. We have a treat for World War II modellers as
Dan Brooker builds a prototype ‘Tiger Tamer’ based on the imposing Soviet KV-2, while we
welcome back David Strauss with Border Model’s Panzer IV Ausf. G. In small-scale Fernando
Grannell does a superb job with Revell’s recent Grille self-propelled howitzer. For modellers with
an interest in more contemporary subjects, Ilya Yut presents a colourful ‘Technical’, while
Shosuro Gaishi builds an abandoned GAZ Tiger from the early days of Russia’s criminal invasion
of Ukraine. Finally, it’s a great pleasure to join Poland’s Łukasz Orczyc-Musiałek, a stalwart of
MMI over the past decade, ‘at the bench’. Until next time, happy modelling.

tank. The tank was
first introduced to the Israeli
Defense Force (IDF) as
early as 1959 with the petrol

they were converted to diesel
engines and known as Sho’t
Kal. They remained in service
until 1992, and the hull of

of the mainstays of the IDF

of 1973. In 1967 the IDF had
around 385 Centurion tanks.

of the most widely exported
tanks of the Cold War, serving
with various NATO members,
with Egypt and other Middle
Eastern countries, as well as
with India and South Africa
and, of course, Israel. It was
well armoured, mechanically
reliable and was armed with
the 20-pounder (84mm) and
subsequently standard NATO
105mm main gun.
Israel had purchased almost
400 Centurion Mk. IIIs (armed
with the 20-pounder) and Mk.
Vs (with the 105mm gun) in the
late 1950s. These underwent a
series of minor local
modifications and were
christened Sho’t (‘whip’ in
Hebrew). By the mid 1960s,
however, it was clear that the
Centurion was becoming
obsolete in the face of the
newest generation of Soviet
tanks. The harsh climatic
conditions of Israel’s Negev

shortcomings of the

the crew have baptised their piece ‘Challenger’. The M110 and M107

In Action
In Vietnam, artillery units
(especially in the Marines and

manned and reinforced as a

units. There are many
recorded instances where
artillery units were left thinly

artillerymen were forced to

was often accomplished by

artillerymen in 1969. The M98 was nothing more than
a 4.2-inch mortar on the carriage of the 75mm pack
howitzer. The reason these weapons were adopted in
the early 1960s was as a means of providing artillery
units with a weapon with a powerful punch which could
be carried ashore in an LVTP-5 or as an underslung
helicopter load. Used widely in 1965, very few remained
in service by 1969, by which time the Marines equalled
the Army in prowess when it came to moving artillery
units by helicopter. The Marines used the CH-46
Sea Knight and CH-53 Sea Stallion as their heavy lift
helicopters. (USMC photo)
