Almen se non poss'io

Text by Pietro Metastasio (1698–1782), aria of Servilia from act 2 of the libretto to La clemenza di Tito
Set by Vincenzo Bellini (1801–1835), from Sei Ariette, #4

Recitative
Dall'adorato oggetto vedersi abbandonar; From the beloved object to be abandoned;
saper che a tanti rischi corre ad esporsi; to know that he is exposed to so many risks;
in seno per lui sentirsi il cor tremante, to feel for him my heart trembling,
e nel periglio non poterlo seguir: and into the peril not being able to follow him:
questo è un affanno d'ogni affanno maggior; this is an anxiety of every greater anxiety;
questo è soffrire la pena del morir senza morire. this is suffering the pain of death without dying.
