Continuous Glucose Monitoring Devices and emerging
trends in Glucose Monitoring
For a person living with diabetes, regular blood sugar (glucose)
checking is a painful but an important part. The standard way of
measuring the glucose levels in the blood is by taking a small
sample of blood from one’s finger and holding it against a test strip
attached to a blood glucose meter.

This needs to be done several times a day or week as may be

advised by the Doctor.

The advent of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) machines or

devices may possibly mean that diabetics won’t be required to prick
their fingers so frequently.

Continuous glucose monitoring is a method of, continuously

monitoring the glucose in the body.

It involves placing a tiny sensor just under the skin that measures
the individual’s glucose levels, transmitting this information to an
external monitor or mobile phone or both.

Here, are the pros and cons of CGM devices as of now and other emerging trends in glucose monitoring

Benefits of CGM Devices

• It reduces or eliminates the need for frequent finger-prick testing, which can become quite a burden
for many people.
• It can be useful for people with diabetes who often have hypoglycaemia unawareness. Some diabetics
do not experience any symptoms even if they are having low blood glucose which is dangerous and
considered a medical emergency. However, with CGM the individual can be warned that his blood
glucose is getting low before it becomes a problem by continuously monitoring the blood glucose.
• The ability to send proper and accurate readings to the healthcare provider helps them understand
the situation in much greater detail, which they can use to make medication decisions or to give
accurate lifestyle advice.

Disadvantages of CGM devices

While CGM devices may seem ideal for all diabetics, but they have their own disadvantages.

Painful process of inserting Sensors - For some the process of inserting the sensor can be painful, and with most devices, this needs to be done every week or
every two weeks. In addition, when a sensor is replaced, the new one needs to be placed at a different spot, and on smaller bodies, this can sometimes be a challenge.
Irritation or sores due to Sensors - Some people also find that the insertion site can get irritated or sore.
Technical Snags - There can also be problems with a loss of signal with the connection between the sensor and the CGM device, resulting in losing important data
about their blood glucose levels.
Privacy Issue. In most CGM’s being marketed today, one needs to place the external device near the sensor for the CGM device to pick up the signal, there is a
permanent reminder that they have diabetes, and which is visible to everyone and is annoying socially.

Future of CGM devices

New technologies are always being developed and some of the current cons can be reduced or eliminated. Some of the most important developments are
as follows –

• Closed loop and fully insertable CGM systems.

• Longer Sensor Life.
• Guardian Sensor beneath the skin works differently - rather than giving off an alarm that tells the user they need to take or reduce their insulin, the
attached insulin pump will automatically adjust insulin levels when it detects changes to blood glucose levels.
• Use of smartwatches to measure blood glucose levels as a CGM device alone or with other sensors.
• Nano-sensors that can detect glucose levels in one’s breath.
• External patch with microneedles measures blood glucose instead of a sensor that needs to be inserted into the skin.
