1 Alliteration
Having the same consonant sounds, occur close together in a series.
Eg: withering winds. (w)
2 Assonance
Repeat of vowel sounds.
Eg: Men sells the wedding bells. (e)
3 Onomatopoeia
Words imitating natural sounds.
Eg: meowing, roaring, splash, etc
4 Repetition
Phrases or words repeating to give emphasis.
Eg: Water! Water! Everywhere.
Not a single drop to drink.
5 Metaphor
Comparing without ‘like’ or ‘as’.
Eg: slower than a garden snail, faster than a cunning fox.
6 Simile
Comparing with ‘as’ or ‘like’.
Eg: slow like a garden snail, as fast as a fox.
7 Enjambment
Continuation of a line to the next without a comma or a full stop.
8 Personification
Human attributes given to animals or inanimate objects.
Eg: murmuring fan, wears a coat of fur.
9 Oxymoron
Two opposite ideas combined as one.
Eg: open secret, tragic comedy.
10 Hyperbole
Exaggeration.
Eg: He weighs like an elephant.
