Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Business in today′s world is on the rise and increasingly diverse.

Nowadays, managing business is the demand in our society because you can

enter in the world of business even if people starts with a small business until

it continuously grow widely and improve its creative and competitive activity.

The role of business in social and economic development cannot be

underestimated (Smyth, 2019). Our world becomes different each second, and

so does business environment. Aside from that, schools are increasingly

becoming important in supporting this new generation of doers.

Not too long ago when K to 12 system was introduced by the Department

of Education. K to 12 is an education system that aims to enhance learners’

basic skills, produce more competent citizens, and prepare graduates for

lifelong learning and employment. In line with this is the Entrepreneurship

which has been incorporated on the learning competency of Senior High

Students. Studying entrepreneurship benefits students and learners from

different social and economic backgrounds because it teaches people to

cultivate unique skills and think outside the box. Moreover, it creates

opportunity, installs confidence, ensures social justice and stimulates the

economy. This also provides budding entrepreneurs with the skills and

knowledge to come up with business ideas and develop their own ventures.

(Hernando, 2019)

Learning entrepreneurship is very different from learning anything else.

The very concept of the program is to help the students identify their strengths

and talents and to work on improving them. This also exposes students to

numerous opportunities to learn how to think critically and analyze the pieces

on the board. Furthermore, it serves as an excellent foundation for the types of

creative and innovative ideas we need to succeed in the 21 st century

(Constantine, 2017). On the other hand, entrepreneurial activity can be tough

and long journey for every student entrepreneur (Rampton, 2018) but has a

vital role for all entrepreneurs.

As K to 12 curriculum was implemented, Castor Z. Concepcion Memorial

National High School added Entrepreneurship subject as part of learning

competency in Grade 12 students and have been conducting month-long

selling activity. This activity was conducted yearly during 1 st semester. In line

with this, there comes the presence of several ups and downs in the entire the

selling activity. There will be a big competition among all student

entrepreneurs due to similarities of their products. With regards to their

financial and profit, students are struggling because of money lost as well as

leftover products. Despite of the bad effects, there are also the good. Although

managing a small business is challenging, it’s also quite interesting and

exciting.

The researchers decided to conduct this study for younger students to

have a glance in the world of business especially for those who will be on the

business track so that they can gain more knowledge on what

entrepreneurship is and on how the selling activity is happening. As

Accountancy Business Management (ABM) students, this will be beneficial to

the researchers because it will serve as their guide as they go on higher year

and experience the said activity. In addition, this study is an advantage on

their side because the researchers will be able to know how to manage the

business more effectively and successfully without suffering into any problems.
