Albrecht Durer was a German painter, printmaker and theorist.

His work is known for painting and

printmaking and his most famous piece is The Rhinoceros, Albrecht Durer art style includes northern
renaissance, German renaissance and gothic art.

The rhinoceros painting is a woodcut artwork. Why did he made the rhinoceros is because he
wanted the rhinoceros to show is full of life and fills the page to emphasise its size. As why the
artwork is popular is because Durer's woodcut became very popular in Europe, it was regarded as a
true representation of a rhinoceros into the late 18 th century. As the rhinoceros is an Indian
rhinoceros and was brought to Europe as a gift, the artwork is not an accurate representation of an
Indian rhinoceros as Albrecht Dürer depicts an animal with hard plates that cover its body like an
armour, with a gorget at the throat and a solid looking chest plate. None of these features are
present in a real rhinoceros.

Albrecht Dürer uses woodcut to his artwork like dry-point etching.

My opinion of this artwork as how it become popular was how popular Albrecht Durer and his
artwork it and was the first representation of an Indian rhino, and it was observed from a far
distance it looks like the rhino has armour. The texture was very realist, and I would like to try on a
plexiglass. The style of the rhino has it shown its heavy, strong and huge. With the depth it made it
real even it not as the same as the real rhino.

I like the texture of the painting as I don’t really use depth in my artwork and I going to have a dry-
point etching artwork it can improve my understanding of tone and use it in the future.
