Sigmund Freuds The Uncanny

Freuds theory on the uncanny talks about elements and themes, which lead to uneasiness, worry and distress when being surrounded by them. Freud also suggests that the uncanny mainly revolves around something we know and familiar to; being tampered with. This is slightly unsettling; this may impact people so much that the object becomes unknown. He talks of a 'Species of the frightening that goes back to

what was once well known and had long been familiar.
The idea was and still is constructed around the German word Unheimlich meaning un-homely. This method can make a picture or an object look like it could turn on their owners. This could be considered chilling and slightly disturbing. The one thing that stood out to me in Freuds essay, he focuses of the uncanny on people, objects/ belongings, experiences and certain situations in a persons life. Although Species of the Frightening that goes back to

what was once well known and had long been familiar

Here are just some examples of ways things can be uncanny: The Uncanny Valley: Too realistic to tell if its real or not.

Doubles, doppelgangers

Isolation (empty spaces)

Possession of inanimate objects

Associated Artists
Gregory Crewdson Gregory Crewdson is a well-known photographer for his staged scenes in American suburban homes and neighbourhoods. His work has a very different feel to them, some depicts disturbing And sometimes there is an Extra-terrestrial feel featured in as well. I chose Crewdson as my inspirational artist because his work features a lot of dramatic and his use of pale colours to set the scene and helps add the atmospheric feel. In some pieces, beams of strong light appear from the sky above. Which gives the picture a more alien and extra-terrestrial idea to them. The characters featured Crewdsons pieces of work are quite mysterious and what people could say not normal because they are completely isolated in places where there is no obvious population. Crewdson works with isolation and tries to make the audience think of what is happening. This adds to the loneliness and mystery.

Edward Hopper Edward Hopper is a realist painter and printmaker. Mainly famous for his work which leaves a slight cliff hanger this is where it lets the audience think what is going to happen next. Hooper has influenced films to recreate his paintings such as

House by the railroad, which was recreated in the famous horror film Psycho, His other painting Nighthawks
Was later recreated in the sci-fi film Blade Runner and many others. I have also chosen Edward Hopper because of how he creates scenes that make people decide whats going to happen next and talent of creating emptiness in some paintings.

Influence Map

For my concept image, I am going to create a scene where it shows a lot of depth, and emotion. For emotion I could include different objects that symbolise family by using a picture frame or just using an object that a child used to play, for example a basketball or a football. The colour and the tone of the painting hopefully will make everything so visually pleasing and will play with the idea of emotion. In this project, I want to do something that no one has ever created before. My love for Chinese culture and tradition should hopefully be shown, when the creation of the uncanny

takes place. Also you always see Chinese traditional buildings, land and gardens looking beautiful and amazingly laid out and taken care off; I want to experiment with this concept and make something that is beautiful and brake it down slowly.

Just getting comfortable with uncanny in objects or places for example an empty derelict Chinese building, a broken and mistreated lone picture frame, a train tunnel etc. by using thumbnails 1, 3 & 4; I will eventually start creating my final developed piece. I want to make something as beautiful as Chinese traditional building and slowly and subtly change things around and give that effect that somethings just doesnt feel right.

Essay introduction
This essay will analyse the nature of The Uncanny Valley and will focus attention to its effect in the film industry. One film in particular, which springs to mind; is Stephan Spielbergs 2011 Adaptation of Tin Tin. This film is truly visually satisfying and breaks the boundaries for realism. This essay will also compare different films for example; The

incredibles, Disney PIXARs Up, and talk about different styles featured in the films and what their intent was when making the film.
