Imagine a world where everyone is given
the same respect, the same credit, and the
same reward for their hard work. Picture the
year 2080, when society thrives on equality
and fairness, specifically with income. But will
this ever be achieved? Pay Equity is the
concept of equal pay for work of substantially
equivalent value.
However, by advancing pay equity,
societies and economies can boost the
productivity of businesses and workers.
Numerous studies have predicted extensive
and extraordinary economic benefits as a
result of equal pay. According to the Mckinsey
Global Institute, by promoting workforce
equality, an astonishing $12 trillion would be
added to the Global GDP in 2 years.
Why do specific people get paid less or
more than others? How does that reflect the
treatment of identities in society? And most
importantly, is that fair? As a society, we
should always strive to promote fairness and
equality, which is why statistics such as the
following are so alarming.
Let’s take actress and advocate, Michelle
Williams, who in 2018 revealed that she
was being paid substantially less than her
male-co star, Mark Wahlberg. While
reshooting the film ‘All the Money in the
World’, Williams made approximately
$625,000 overall, while Wahlberg was paid
almost $5 million.

According to the Equal Pay Act of 1969,
1 wage discrimination based on race, gender, 2
religion, age, or disability is prohibited.
Nevertheless, countless individuals,
particularly from minority groups, still face the
lifelong challenge of being treated as though
their hard work isn’t valuable to society.
This is because if more employed
3 individuals feel as though their work is 4
being valued, they will feel motivated to give
their best effort, much like a child striving to
impress their parents after receiving a
compliment. Another key argument for pay
equity is more related to the moral questions
at play.
Data shows that for every dollar that a man
5 earns, a white woman earns 80 cents, and 6
a woman of colour earns 57 cents. That’s
right! These statistics highlight the distressing
disparity based on one’s personal values and
beliefs. Throughout the last century, many
celebrities have advocated for equal pay.
That's almost 8 times as much! This
7 example serves as a reminder that pay 8
inequity is still normalised to this day. Why
should I go through 13 years of schooling just
to be paid mere cents? So I can simply be
looked down on like a pebble among
diamonds, insignificant and ignored. And it's
not just me, millions of people around the
world are being misjudged, mistreated, and
most importantly, having their hopes and
dreams snatched away.

So what can we do about it? We can raise

awareness and most importantly lead by 9
example. We need to fix this. This is our
life, our generation. Instead of simply hoping
for a change, let's take matters into our own
hands. Thank you
