Motivation Letter

I am writing to express my interest in the PhD-1 position of Chemical Load Assessment for
Watershed at the University of Waterloo: waterloo, UN, Canada CA entitled: Develop user-
oriented tools to extract, match, consolidate, and analyze time series data on river water and
groundwater chemistry, discharge, and meteorological variables from open datasets. As a
passionate hydrologist and environmentalist with knowledge on water quality, biogeochemistry,
and data science, I am confident that my skills and experience will make a significant contribution
to your team.
My passion for this field led me to conduct thesis research on assessing the quality of surface
water, groundwater, and the regional geochemistry to investigate the reason for salinization of
agricultural land situated between the Sile and Elgo rivers (which are draining to Lake Chamo).
Through this research, I gained invaluable hands-on experience and an in-depth understanding of
how natural and human activities can significantly impact the degradation of agricultural land in
the watershed systems.
Through my academic background and extensive research experience, I have developed a deep
understanding of hydrological and watershed systems, particularly in relation to water quality and
geochemistry of the regional groundwater. I have conducted fieldwork, laboratory experiments,
and data analysis on various research projects that revolve around the complex interactions
between hydrology, watershed, and water quality.
Furthermore, I have appreciable knowledge in watershed modeling tool (SWAT), considerable
skill in Geographical Information System (GIS), strong programming skill in Python, and I am
experienced in working with complex datasets, analyzing large amounts of geospatial and temporal
data, and using statistical methods to derive meaningful insights.
Therefore, as an ambitious hydrologist and environmentalist, I am eager to contribute to this
critical field of study through research and practice. I am confident that I could contribute
significantly to your team. I am eager to join and work on projects focused on implementing new
approaches for sustainable management of water resources. Thank you very much for considering
my application.

Yours Sincerely
Abeanezer Lukas Bassa
