    Two early American civilizations that developed independently of Afro-Eurasian civilizations were the Teotihuacan and Mayans. The Teotihuacan, near modern-day Mexico City, had a population of over 125,000 people by the 6th century CE and traded regionally. The Mayans, south of the Teotihuacan, peaked between 250-900 CE and had one of the most complex written languages in pre-contact America along with an accurate calendar system. Both civilizations organized into city-states and made contributions to mathematics, astronomy, and calendrical systems.
