II. PARTS OF PARAGRAPH

 Topic is a particular issue that acts as a subject in a paragraph. Topic is the
things that you want to write about.
 Topic sentence is the sentence that explains and gives more information
about the topic that the writers want the readers to know.

 III. ELEMENTS OF TOPIC SENTENCE
 Topic sentence is the first part in creating a paragraph. It consists of two main
elements, they are
 Topic or main subject + controlling Sentence = topic sentence

Note:
The underline sentence in the topic sentence is called controlling sentence
 Good writers know that an effective topic sentence has a certain rule. The
three main rules are:
1. It has to be a complete sentence.
2. Not too general and too specific
3. It should not be a well-known fact, which is known by everybody

IV,. RULES OF TOPIC SENTENCE

 A complete sentence is a sentence that expresses a complete thought about the topic. It makes of
subject + verb + object
Example: computer is very important for university students.
▪ It always end with a full stop (.) or period.
Another example
o Computer important for university students. This sentence is not a complete sentence because it has no
verb, it contains only a subject ( computer) and an object (university students)

RULE ONE: Topic sentence is a complete sentence

 A good topic sentence is not a sentence that is too general either too specific
Example: computers are good.
In this case, the writes should give more information to let their readers know how good
the computer are and its specialization with the computer benefits.
A good topic sentence should be:
➢ Computers are very useful for three reasons✓
▪ The readers know what to read in the paragraph, and what to expect from the writers

RULE TWO: Not too general and too specific

 A well-known fact is something that everybody knows what it is already.
 A good paragraph should allow the topic sentence to explain the controlling sentence
that support the support the topic sentence.
Example of well-known fact
❑ The sun is round.
❑ Human being has two legs
❑ Water boils at 100 degree

RULE THREE: It should not be a well-known fact ,
