Maintaining a Clean and Safe Work Site

I. Learning Competency with Code

3.3. Maintain a clean and safe work site while undertaking irrigation
activities in accordance with OHS (Occupational Health and Safety)
procedures.

II. Background Information for Learners

As learners it is important to learn the knowledge and skills in
maintaining a clean and safe working site during and after each work
completion. Maintaining a clean and safe work site should be a high
priority for workers while undertaking irrigation activities in accordance
with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) procedures.

Cleaning is the process of removing unwanted substances, such as

dirt, infectious agents, and other impurities, from an object or
environment.

Benefits of a Clean and Organized workplace

1. Prevent Injuries
Slips, trips, and falls are leading cause of accidents. To prevent
accidents, it is important to clean up the spills and dust immediately.
Always keep walkways and work areas clear of tools, clutter, supplies,
and potential hazards such as cords and hoses to prevent tripping. Open
cabinet doors or drawer can also cause accident. Cleaning up workplace
can also prevent rodent and insect infestation.

2. Prevent Fire
Fire is very dangerous. To prevent fire-related incidents, store
flammable materials properly, always clean up spills, sawdust, and other
fine particles, and always clear the exit way for emergency.

3. Increase Productivity
Tidiness can improve employee efficiency. If tools and other
materials are kept where workers can find and easily access them, they
will not have to waste their time finding it. If workers begin their shift
with clean, sharpened tools, replacement parts store close by and a tidy
workspace, they can efficiently complete the task on hand. Cleaning
immediately, whether it’s replacing tools or cleaning up spills, is more
efficient and often takes less time than making a special effort later.

4. Improve Morale
A clean work environment can indicate that the entire work site is
well-managed and creates a sense of calm and order. Workers will not get
frustrated of finding the tools and other materials they need to get the job
done.

5. Meet OSHA requirements

Cleaning practices fall under various OSHA rules so if cleaning is a
priority at your workplace, meeting the OSHA requirement will be easy to
comply.

Six ways to ensure a safe workplace and promote a strong safety

culture

1. Eliminate Potential Hazards

Always make sure that workplace is free from different hazards
that may cause illnesses to workers. Make some techniques to always
remind workers the importance of the safety of everyone, appropriate
use of PPE, tools, and equipment and how to avoid hazards.
Encourage them to identify and report problems and safety violations
to the authority and take immediate steps to resolve those problems
as soon as possible.

2. Make sure all workers are properly trained

All workers must undergo safety training using language that they
can understand. The training should be given to all new workers, with
refresher courses offered to for existing workers or when workers
change jobs within the company.

3. Make sure workers have the proper equipment

Make sure workers have and using safe tools and equipment and
properly maintained equipment. Company may use digital signage to
have an effective communication for reinforcing injury prevention.

 Raise awareness in the workplace in proper handling of hazardous
materials, lock-out, tag-out and machine guarding.

4. Provide visual safety aide and messages

Use color codes, posters, labels, and signage to warn workers of
potential hazards. In addition, employers can post OHS posters in all
work and recreational areas. It can also use a bulletin or information
board to display the recorded incidents to remind workers to stay safe.

5. Create a safety committee and hold monthly safety meeting

Establish a workplace health and safety committee made up of
workers. The members should meet at least once a month to discuss
and update safety conditions, inspections, injury and illnesses
statistics and other safety-related concerns. As employer, you can also
hold meeting with all workers to solicit feedbacks and information.
Getting regular feedback and information from workers can help
eliminate or minimize potential hazards.

6. Make safety fun

One way to help incorporate safety into workplace is to make learning
about safety fun. Employee can create safety-themed trivia, quizzes, and
videos of safety dos and don’ts. Friendly competition including prizes,
and recognition can motivate the workers to participate at the same time
they are learning about safety.

To be successful in maintaining the cleanliness of the work site, let

employees know that everyone is responsible for the clean-up chores.
Employers can put markers of all storage areas for tools and other materials
for easy access. In addition, train workers to clean as they go as their daily
routine.
