History of The Philippine Flag
History of The Philippine Flag
General Emilio Aguinaldo conceived a new flag during the second phase of the Philippine
Revolution.
It took five days to complete the flag, which was handed over to Aguinaldo before he returned to
the Philippines.
The flag received its baptism of fire and blood during a battle with Spanish forces on May 28,
1898.
On June 12, 1898, the flag was unfurled at the Aguinaldo Mansion in Kawit, Cavite, symbolizing
the proclamation of Philippine independence.
Under American rule, displaying the flag was prohibited until 1919 when it was allowed on
"Philippine Flag Day."
The National Historical Institute became the authority on Philippine vexillaries and heraldry.
