1 PREPARING TO SERVICE
Before starting to service be sure to take all safety precautions, please check the followings :
Check the earth connection of the unit
Your health is the most important
There is High voltage at some parts inside of the STS unit, before you touch these points turn
off power
To touch hot surfaces may harm service personnel. Be sure that the hot surface and
component temperatures are at safe level
Keep away your face from components during power applied to the STS unit
During installation check that input and output power cables are not connected to power yet.
Possible bad connection can cause electrical arching, check if all cable connections are
correct and tight.
Before servicing provide this service manual for easy servicing
Please check service equipment you require (multimeters, ampermeters etc..)
Provide drawings of the STS unit
Remember that you will need service password or service password bypass jumper
Check recorded log events of the STS unit before starting service
Get information about power events at the STS inputs
Check false alarm status
Due to the unique design, the unit can be serviced only by authorised people. In case of a persistent
failure or problem properly turn off the unit first. Then review the following check list. Be prepared to
answer the questions before calling the service.
1. First off all please note the error code AXX on the second line of the STS LCD panel
2. Did you follow the operation procedure? Did it happen on installation?
3. Did a power failure occur just after or before the malfunction noted on the STS?
4. What is the indicators status? (see alarms and alarm codes)
5. See recorded log events and their date and time
6. Were any changes made recently to the unit or to the equipment connected to the output of the
unit?
7. Did an overload condition occur? Remove load from the unit and restart it.
8. Check the two source input phase voltages and input fuses of the STS
9. Is the utility power phase sequence correct (were there any changes in phase sequence of the
input mains)?
10.If the load fails and there is no alarm on STS, check the load distrubition fuses cables etc…
11.If over temperature alarm occurs please check the air outlets of the STS

CUSTOMER MAINTENANCE
WARNING !!!
The unit is designed for easy maintenance. Very little customer user maintenance is required. The following will
help to ensure trouble -free operation for many years:
1. Vacuum the dust from the ventilation intake on the front panel.
2. Wipe the cover with a damp cloth.
STS unit is a microprocessor controlled transfer switch, designed for automatic and manual switching between
two AC power sources, with interruption to the load of less than 2 msecs with synchronized sources and of less
than 12 msecs for unsynchronized sources.
STS utilizes SCRs connected in opposite parallel pairs (six pairs for 3 pole models, eight pairs for 4 pole
models). Three or four pairs of SCRs are used to connect the AC load to the power supply input referred to as
“PREFERRED”, under normal conditions. The other three (of four) pairs of SCRs are on standby to transfer the
load to the other power supply input referred to as “ALTERNATE” in case of a failure of the “PREFERRED”
input supply.
Source 1 and Source 2 supply inputs should come from two different AC sources with nominally identical
voltages, phases and frequencies. The aim of the STS is uninterrupted transfer from one AC power supply to
the other, in case of a fault in the “PREFERRED” supply.
Before and during transfer from one source to the other, the operating conditions of the SCRs are carefully
monitored to prevent crosscurrents between two sources. The break-before-make technique makes healthy
and uninterrupted transfers possible.
During normal operation, “PREFERRED” network supplies the load when both inputs are available. Selection of
the “PREFERRED” network, automatic re-transfer, retransfer delay, overload behaviour of STS, alarm hold
time, nonsynchronized transfer behaviour, overload and transfer inhibit reset modes can be set by the user on
the control panel of the unit.
Permitted voltage, phase difference and frequency tolerances are also adjustable by the service personnel
using the control panel.

Source 1 and Source 2 input circuit breakers are MCCB’s with thermal overload and magnetic short circuit
releases. They also have trip coils for electronic protection purposes.
SHORT CIRCUIT
In the event of a fault on the load, in order to protect itself and the alternate source, the STS inhibites the output
voltage. During short circuit event on the load, the source connected to load will be overloaded and the voltage
of this source will go down, at this point STS monitors the output current and if current is larger then 200% of
nominal output current and if the input source voltage is lower than the allowed limit at the same time, it decides
that short circuit event has occurred at the output of the STS.
On the other hand during over current status, if the input MCCB trips STS decides that a short circuit event has
occurred at the output of the STS.
OVERLOAD
Electronic overload protection system is used inside of the STS. This protection system can be enabled or
disabled by the user as an option.
BACKFEED
The STS have electronic protection system against backfeed from any one of the input sources, if any backfeed
current is sensed, the related input MCCB trips.
FUSES
There are no any replacable fuses on the power path inside of the STS, only input MCCB’s protect against
overcurrents.
Manual transfer switch is located on the switch panel behind the front door of the STS cabinet and is used to
transfer the load to input source1 or source2 immediately. During normal operation this switch must be at
AUTO (center) position.

EPO input is NC type interface (normally closed). If EPO input terminals are opened STS applies EPO
shutdown procedure. This isolated input is used to turn off the STS remotely in case of emergency.
These “Remote Emergency Power Off ” (E.P.O.) terminals are short-circuited ( see “View of the STS
connections”) in the factory. If NC terminals are opened, STS shutdowns the output voltage.
In case of emergency, by activating the stop device STS enters the stand-by mode and turns off the load
completely.
The E.P.O. circuit is self-powered, no external power supply voltage is therefore required.
During normal operation, if EPO switch is not used, the EPO input terminals should be shorted with a small
cable
17 WIRING PROCEDURE
A. Open the STS cabinet front door and remove the metal guard on the lower side to permit access to the
connection terminals and busbars (neutral and earth). Before connecting any power cables, please ensure
that all the circuit breakers on the STS are in “OFF” position. (SW1, SW2, SW3 and SW4)
B. Connect the SOURCE 1 AC power cables to the terminals U1-V1-W1 and N1 of the STS (Figure 7,8,9,10)
and tighten the connections properly.
C. Connect the SOURCE 2 AC power cables to the terminals U2-V2-W2 and N2 of the STS (Figure 7,8,9,10)
and tighten the connections properly.
Output Connections
D. Connect the output cables to the terminals (U-V-W-N) of the STS (Figure 7,8,9,10) and tighten the
connections properly.
E. Also proper control and signal wire connections (Alarm relays, EPO etc.) should be made through the screw
terminal block shown in figure 11.
PROTECTIVE EARTH
The protective earth cable must be connected to the earth BUS BAR and bonded to each cabinets in the
system and also the earthing and neutral bonding arrangements must be in accordance with the local laws.
Proper grounding considerably reduces problems in systems caused by electromagnetic interference.
ATTENTION!!! Failure to follow adequate earthing procedures can result in electric shock
hazard to personnel, or the risk of fire

18 POWER SUPPLY
Source 1 phases, source 2 phases and external AC input source are OR’ed together through fuses
and diodes. Any one of these 7 sources is enough to provide full power to the PSP inputs.
Source 2 phases are isolated by isolation transformers for 4 pole preparation.
STFUSE1 board contains power supply input filters, fuses and diodes.
Every input MCCB have a DC trip coil. These coils are under control of the microcontroller and
energized during EPO and BACKFEED protection for turning off the supply inputs of the STS.
If a coil is energized, input MCCB trips and switch position changes to 0 (off) position.
Page
SERVICE MANUAL 24 of 94
2 PSP outputs are connected to each PCB board separately. If one of the PSPs is failed, the other
continues to feed the board. During operation, you can take out any one of the PSP boards. The
other PSP continues to supply the electronic control circuits.
The output waveform of the PSP is PWM signal, all boards have separate isolation transformers,
rectifiers and voltage regulators.
The PWM signal is pulse width regulated against PSP input voltage changes.

At the same time you can see more than one code, if 2 alarms occured at the same time. The resulting code
will be the sum of 2 codes. Suppose that on source 1, code 1 and code 8 occured at the same time, the
resulting code will be 9.
Zero code shows that there is no alarm on source. Alarm codes are located at the end of alarms menu.
A4 OVERLOAD alarm
Possible cause
<OVLOAD:enable> option is selected, and the any output phase current is higher than the
maximum output current capacity
False alarm conditions:
Any voltage is higher than 1.1 volts DC at the STC01 main board U4 (pin1,2,3)
Output current sense transformers are not compatible with the model current range
Defected current transformer
Defected current transformer load resistor (open circuit)
Notes:
• If <OVLOAD: disable> selected from options menu the STS unit do not sense overload at the
output
• If <OVLOAD: enable> selected from options menu STS applies the fallowing time table
101%-150% Load operates for 1 minute and shutdowns the output voltage
151%-200% Load operates for 10 seconds and shutdowns the output voltage
Load >200% operates for 250 milliseconds and shutdowns the output voltage
• At the end of the delay, the output will be shutdown without transferring to the alternate source
• During shutdown at the same time <A6 XFER INHIBIT> and <A4 OVERLOAD> messages are
displayed on the 2nd line of LCD panel.
Resetting OVERLOAD INHIBIT (output voltage restoration)
• If<OVL.RESET:AUTO> option selected, at the end of ALARM HOLD TIME, STS output voltage
will be restored
• If <OVL.RESET:MANUAL> option selected, user should restore the output voltage in
COMMANDS MENU by pressing enter button <ENT:INHIBIT RES>
Possible cause
If <NSYNC.TR:Disabled> option is selected and if during transfer from Source1 to Source2,
input sources are not synchronous to each other, the output voltage is shutdown
If <NSYNC.TR:Disabled> option is selected and if during transfer from Source2 to Source1
input sources are not synchronous to each other, the output voltage is shutdown
How to prevent this alarm: if the load is not sensitive to nonsynchron transfer, select one of
other transfer methods (delay or zero current)

During servicing after you check all testpoints you may decide to replace STC01-R2 board with a
new one. At this point you need some useful information
Recorded parameters on EEPROM : If the main board is replaced with a new one, you must do
all calibrations and adjustments on STS unit again. In this case you will need AC-DC voltmeter, AC
ampermeter and thermometer for temperature calibration.
Maintenance bypass : During servicing if the unit is in maintenance bypass and if you have
replaced the main board, starting up the STS with the new main board can cause power interruptions
before you adjust parameters. Please note that maintenance bypass is for maintenance not for
servicing.
Microcontroller replacement : If you decide to replace microcontroller with a new one you don’t
need to make calibrations and adjustments because the EEPROM which keeps the adjustment
parameters is located on the main board not in the microcontroller itself.

Main boards at different power ranges : from 100 to 400 amps, different models uses the
same main board. Only you must select output current multiplier from adjust menu.
The following table shows the output current selector or multiplier. From adjust menu type the
password and select CUR.MULT: XXX submenu item from the list and use (-) and (+) buttons to
calibrate the output current according to output load percentage.
This board provide AC input source voltage samples to main board. There are 6 220V/2x12V small
transformers on the PCB board. Three of the transformers are used for sampling source 1 and the other three
tranformers are used for sampling source 2 input voltages. Neutrals of two sources are isolated from each other
for 4 pole units.
During operation some voltage measurements can be done on this board. For 220Vac rating STS device check
the following test points for given voltage values:
Before checking the connection cable from STV01-CN1 to main board check STC01 testpoints ref10 to ref33.
If the alarm contunies, check STV01 board CN1 connector to main board. Check the flat cable for bad or short
connection.
STV01-R2 board is a simple board, there are six AC voltage sampling transformers on it. If you decide to
replace this board with a new one only transformer input voltage range will be different according to model input
voltage ratings.
There are three voltage comparators on STM01 board. The outputs of these comparators are logical OR’ed
and connected to main board. If any one of the output phase voltages of the STS is outside the acceptable
limits, set by the reference voltages VREF1 and VREF2 on the STM01 board, a fault signal is generated at the
output of this board (LD1 turned on) and is connected to the main board through CN2.

During replacement of this board only one point is important, the output voltage range of the STS
MODEL effects the AC voltages on CN1 connector. So if the output voltage range of the STS unit is
not standard the reference voltage must be modified. In this case please specify the output voltage
during spare parts order.

33 PRELIMINARI OPERATION
The purpose of the STS is to select one of two input power lines which can be tolerated within the predefined
limits.
Users must decide that one of the input sources should have priority (preferred source). The other source wii
be the alternate source. So the STS tries to stay at priority (preferred) source if this source is in predefined limit
values. If this source is out of tolerance and the alternate source is in the acceptable limits, STS transfers the
load to alternate source. STS continuously checks priority (preferred) source, if it returns to tolerated limits,
retransfers the load to priority (preferred) source.
Therefore, before using the STS we must decide that which source is main (preferred) and which source is
spare (alternate).
IMPORTANT : The STS unit is designed and produced for long life even under severest conditions.
Remember however that, they are electrical power equipment units and should be checked
periodically. Besides, some components have a life cycle of their own and must therefore be checked
at regular intervals and may need to be replaced. (e.g. fans and some electrolytic capacitors.)
PRELIMINARY OPERATIONS
Visual check of the connections
Check that all the power connections have been made strictly following the indications given
in the “Connections” paragraph.
Check the following switch positions
SW1 – input 1 MCCB is in (0) position (off)
SW2 – input 2 MCCB is in (0) position (off)
SW3 – output switch is in (0) position (off)
SW4 – maintenance bypass switch is in (0) position (center)
Manual transfer switch auto position (center)
At this point there is no output voltage at the STS output terminals
3) SW4 to S1 position
3) SW4 to S2 position
At the center of the control panel there are two lines, with 16 alphanumeric characters per line, which can
provide, a detailed overview of the current status of the STS. You can monitor the electrical values of the
inputs, outputs, and make the main machine settings.
The display is two lines and the role of the lines are as follows:
The A2 at the beginning of the alarm message on the second line shows the standard alarm code. The
remaining message part can be different in each language, but the alarm code is standard for all languages.

** To calculate air capacity the following formula can be used :
Q [mc/h] = 3,1 x Pdiss [Kcal] / (ta - te) [°C]
P diss is the power dissipated by the UPS (expressed in Kcal) within the installation environment.
ta= room temperature, te= external temperature. 10% must be added to the derived figure to take
into account system losses. In the above table an example is shown of capacity with (ta - te)=5° C
and a resistive nominal load (pf=0.9).
PS: This formula can be applicable if ta>te; otherwise, the installation will require air conditioning.
*** The dispersion current of the load is added to that of the UPS on the ground protection
conductor.
