U4 Cell Cycle NOTES Name: Juan Castellanos

L4.1 - Cell Cycle

1. Life cycle = the series of changes in the life of an organism, including reproduction
2. Cell cycle = life cycle of the cell ; series of growth and development steps a cell undergoes
between its “birth” and “division” to make two new daughter cells.

3. How manys days does it take for a cell to complete a cell cycle?
• Bacteria: 20 minutes to 24 hours
• Yeast: 90 minutes to 2 hours
• Mammalian cells: 18 to 48 hours

How will you remember the order?

I = Interphase
P = Prophase
M = Metaphase
A = Anaphase
T = Telophase
C = Cytokinesis

EACH NEW DAUGHTER THEN BEGINS THE CELL CYCLE

3. All cells have a cells have a “CELL / LIFE CYCLE!”

4. However, the duration of the cell cycle varies depending on type and function of cell

5. Complete the table of the average life span of various human body cells

Type of Body Cell Average Life Span

Brain Lifetime (no significant
regeneration)
Red blood 120 days
Stomach lining 5 days
Liver 400-500 days
Intestine lining 3-5 days
Skin 2-4 weeks

STOP and THINK

PREDICT: Do you think a skin cell would have a long or short cell cycle? Explain?
Skin cells have a relatively short cell cycle, typically lasting around 18 to 24 hours. This is much shorter
than the cell cycle of other types of cells, which can last for days or weeks. The short cell cycle of skin
cells is due to their role in providing protection and repairing damage quickly.
