1. Research problem being addressed by the article (10 pts)

The research problem being addressed by the article is how religious identity conflict
affects suicidal behaviors among young adults who are members of the LGBT community.
This study also addressed and tested the role of “internalized homophobia” as a mediator.
Since the main focus are young adults, the article mainly addressed the alarming state of
these young people who do not practice the usual heteronormative standard of typical
society. The article also pointed out factors such as religious conflicts, internalized
persecution, and sexual identity crisis - these being rooted in oppression and discrimination
- and how these affect the mental health of LGBT youths.

2. Theoretical perspectives and/or theories employed by the researcher/s (no need to

discuss; just identify; usually these are mentioned in the article itself) (5 pts)

 Minority stress theory

 Conflict perspective
 Structural functionalism

3. Research Methods used in data-gathering: include a brief 1-2 sentence description (10

Data were gathered by OutProud: The National Coalition for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual

data analysis on the said data to explore religion and LGBT identity conflict including
oppression and mental health.
