Marex OS III – For a Safe Journey

Catalog
2 Marex OS III | Welcome

Welcome
New technologies and materials, design
innovations and the integration of
bus-suitable electronics have opened
to our products more and more fields
of application. In this way, we have
continuously developed from the
manufacturer of classic control systems
based on pneumatics to a system
supplier of electro-pneumatic and fully
electronic engine controls. For either
traditional or electronic systems, Rexroth
offers the entire range of products.
Expertise | Marex OS III 3

Marex OS III – The electronic control system

for all types of vessels

All components are ready to connect, which simplifies the installation in

newbuildings and retrofits. Wiring faults are avoided: Just install the system,
switch it on, make the necessary adjustments and commission the system.
That’s all.

Marex OS III – Systems, modules, units and accessories

The following pages contain information about basic
components of Marex OS III with all relevant technical
details. Marex OS III is a specific part of our program
including electronic and pneumatic controls.

ffExtensive application know-how

ffTraining programs and service worldwide

System solutions made of reliable modules –

turn-key projects from one source
Our products are fail-safe and low in maintenance. We provide
advice from the first draft and accompany you beyond the
conclusion of the contract throughout project engineering
up to the commissioning. The system solution with reliable
support during the operation by our worldwide service
network provides additional safety.

We design and manufacture in cooperation with:

4 Marex OS III | The components

Components
ff Control head to set rpm and gear direction, in different
sizes, designs and optionally with lever follow-up system
ff Emergency control to operate the propulsion system in
case of a remote control failure
ffHand-held control station to operate the remote control
during docking and launching manoeuvres
ff Operating modules to control and indicate special functions
ff Indication modules to display rpm, pitch of propeller and
sense of rotation
ff Ready-to-connect cables between the remote control’s
components

In case of multiple engines, the system is set up several

times accordingly. There, all engines can either be
operated separately or, by means of pressing a key,
conjointly from one control head lever.

The schematic diagram

shows an example of a
remote control for yachts
with two propulsion
systems and four control
stations.
System and technology | Marex OS III 5

The system
Marex OS III stands for “Open System” and is an advance-
ment of Marex OS. Due to its high grade of modularity, the
remote control can be adapted to all particularities of the
propulsion system.

ffAdequate for each type of vessel

ffFlexible in the adaptation to the propulsion system
Control head type 230
ffOptional emergency control system

Engine characteristic lines for economic operation, overload

control and adjustable delay times for smooth and efficient
gear shifting are only a small extract of the functions the
Marex OS III provides.

The technology
The remote control‘s components are connected by means
of pre-confectioned cables. A serial CAN-bus serves for Control head type 244
communication purposes. The CAN-bus ensures a secure
control procedure. Information from the safety system can be
integrated into the control procedure.

ffLittle wiring effort

ff Pre-confectioned electrical cables
ff Devices ready to connect

Operating safety – certification

Hand-held type 250
All components correspond to the highest demands of
safety and fulfill the requirements of the most important
classification societies.
Endurance test
During this test the control head is actuated about one
million times. Well-chosen materials as well as first-class
quality make sure that the devices withstand this high grade
of operation.
Further tests
Vibration, high-voltage, temperature, salt mist, EMC,
Marine propulsion controller
inflammability.

(0 … 150 %, -100 … 100 %, 0 … 500 l), unit adaptable, indication of the digital
value possible, pointers for set value and feedback
• bargraphs: horizontal and vertical versions, classification-conform coloring
red/green or blue, scale ranges (0 … 100 %, -100 … 100 %)
• digital displays: versions for 2 or 3 per page, 5 digits excl. algebraic signs, unit
adaptable, additional text field
• function displays with integrated LED: versions for 2 or 3 per page, LED functions:
permanent light, off, flashing, left-aligned and right-aligned versions as well as 2
LEDs per display for twin-engine systems. LED's color is adaptable
• function displays without LED for presentation of enumerations (e. g. active control
station)
• dividing line

• assignment of operating keys: symbols for dimming, day/night, page up/down, page
left/right, as well as free text

Note: no more than 5 analog displays should be shown per page to allow a quick optical

Electro-pneumatic converter

Technical drawing

The electro-pneumatic converter has to be mounted in a vertical position. Two threaded holes M10 are to be used for mounting. Surveillance
supply voltage and converter input signal has to be provided within the main control system.

Functional diagram

The electro-pneumatic converter modulates pressure corresponding to an analogy electrical nominal value. The integrated electronics makes a
comparison between the nominal value and the pressure in the working line (actual value), which is measured by a piezo-resistive pressure
sensor. The converter generates electrical positioning signals, which either charge or vent control area Z of the relay valve by means of two pilot
valves (M1, M2) in order to obtain the required pressure in the working line.
