About this manual

This manual is a comprehensive guide that contains all of the procedures
needed to handle the CS3000 Fire Alarm System.
For a more detailed description of the system refer to the CS3000 Reference
Manual.
For information on how to maintain and perform service on the system refer to
the CS3000 Service Manual.

All CS3000 systems are custom designed including different numbers of control
units, display units, loops, zones, loop units, etc. This manual describes the
function of the control unit and the display unit MN3000, the latter is
described in a separate chapter at the end of the manual.

To help you to learn and work with the system efficiently, this manual is
organised by tasks, starting with a short description of the control unit panel
and some limitations of the system in the first chapter. The next chapters
describe a fire alarm, when there is a fault and disconnections. A disconnected
unit should be disconnected for a minimum of time since a disconnected unit is
not supervised by the system. All reconnections are made by using the
different lists in the system, refer to chapters Reconnection and Listings
Printouts.

The remaining chapters describe the following:

− How to deactivate and activate alarm delay
− How to adjust the system
− How to adjust the detectors
− How to display system status
− How to test lamps/LEDs and buzzers

All the fault codes are listed in Appendix A.

There might be some deviations between the text shown in your display and
the text presented in this manual. Always follow the instructions on your
display, if there are major deviations we would most grateful if you would
report them to Consilium Marine.

Chapter 1: CS3000 Fire alarm system

Introduction
The CS3000 is a computerised, fully addressable analogue fire alarm system
with analogue detectors. The detectors are automatically tested and
continuously supervised by the central unit. In the event of fire the appropriate
output channels are activated controlling fire-damping measures. At pre-set
fixed intervals the system actively checks that all connected units are in
working order and that the content of the system is according to its
configuration.
The fire alarm system can be divided into several geographically separated
central units and control units, which are inter-connected into a larger system.
Conventional detectors and sensors of closing type can be connected to the
CS3000 system, in addition to the analogue detectors.
The operator supervises and operates the system from one or more control
units, which normally are placed at convenient locations, separated from the
central units.
The different central units and control units of the system communicate with
each other on the system loop, consisting of two RS-422 channels.
The central unit and its detectors communicate on two-wire loops. The loop
can either be a single-ended branch line, a two-way closed loop with or
without connected branch lines. The communication method is based on
frequency modulation (FSK). Each detector is connected to its loop via a
specially developed integrated circuit, IDA, for supervision and
communication. The detectors are normally power supplied from the loop.
In this document “loop” refers to the physical loop as described above. The
physical loop can be divided into max 5 “zones” with a definition program. A
zone can either be the entire loop or a part of a loop.
A system may contain max 999 loops, with max 64 loops per central,
including 400 conventional loops. One loop may have a total of max 150
analogue loop units.
When more than 15 alarms are activated on the same loop all output channels
controlled from that loop are activated (even when controlled from section
units that do not have an active alarm).
This User’s Guide describes the CS3000 fire alarm installation in a marine
environment.

Control unit
All communication between the operator and the system is performed via the
front panel on the control unit, that has been designed for ease of use. If the
CS3000 system detects a fire, fault, abnormal condition or change in the
system status, this is displayed on the control unit panel. The operator can
control and check a number of functions in the system. To make it easier for
the operator to handle the functions, they are divided in to three levels. Each
level is protected by an access code that can easily be changed by the operator.
The following functions are available in the system:
− Disconnection of loops, zones, detectors, manual call points, loop units,
alarm devices, external controls.
− Electric isolation of a loop.
− Reconnection of all disconnected units.
− Display of all events present in the different lists in the system.
User’s Guide Chapter 1: CS3000 Fire alarm system 1-2
CS3000

− Change of system status, such as date, time, and number of loops connected
to the system and connection/disconnection of PC.
− Change of smoke detector settings, such as sensitivity and time delay.
− Display of the status of all loop units connected to the system.
− Test buzzer, LED’s, indicators and display.

Control unit panel

Salwico CS3000

ÇConsilium

The control unit panel is designed for ease of use. Therefore the panel is
divided into two halves, the fire alarm panel and the operating panel. The fire
alarm panel is activated when a fire alarm is detected in the system. The
operator controls and supervises the system by using the four-line display, the
keyboard and a few dedicated keys.

Loop unit address

A loop unit address can be entered in three different ways but only one can be
used at a time. The address type is defined at the installation of the system.
A) 1 - 150
B) 1 - 99.x, x is equal to 0 or 1 (Note the decimal point before the letter x.)
C) 1 - 99x, is equal to 0 or 1
All the addresses in this manual is according to item A), if you have chosen B)
or C) please keep this in mind when reading the manual.

One or more control units

Your system may consist of one, two or more control units. All control units in
a system can communicate with each other and the operator may therefore
change some of the functions such as disconnection and reconnection, for all
control units from one control unit. When one of these functions is selected the
system first asks the operator to specify which unit to work on. If your system
only includes one control unit this text will never occur on your unit.
In this manual we have chosen to show when this text is displayed. If your
system only includes one control unit, disregard this text in the manual and
continue with the next step.

Authorization
The functions of the system are divided into three different access levels, each
level protected by an access code. The system is in access level 1 when the
door to the control unit is closed. To go to access level 2 or 3 the appropriate
access code for each level is entered. Access level 2 can also be reached by
opening the door.
All functions are described one by one, but for clarity the functions have been
grouped according to their functionality into different chapters. The access
code for each function is specified first in each description.

User's Guide Chapter 13: Maintenance 13-1
CS3000

Chapter 13: Maintenance

General
The CS3000 fire alarm central has no parts that need daily maintenance and
since the central is continuously supervised, the central will generate a fault
message if something is not working properly.

The backup batteries have a life cycle of 3-5years depending on the

temperature and charging events. They do not need maintenance during their
life cycle .

Maintenance
It is however recommended to test the loops units such as smoke, heat or flame
detectors and manual call points once every 9-12 months.
The different outputs should also be tested at the same time if possible but in
order not to disturb the crew or passenger too much we recommend to choose
the time for the tests wisely. After having tested the outputs once they may be
turned off during the remaining test of the detectors.

How to perform the test

Make sure to turn off alarm devices (bells etc) and external controls (door
closing, fan stops etc) before performing the tests, unless it is decided to test
these outputs at the same time.
How to turn off these outputs can be found in this manual chapter: 4-13, 4-15.
Reconnection according to chapter 5-1.

Only persons with adequate knowledge of the fire alarm system should
perform this test.
How to mute and reset the alarms can be found in this manual
chapter: 2-4, 2-5.

Heat detectors
Heat detectors are preferably tested with test equipment available from
Consilium.
Apply heat to the sensing element until alarm is indicated by a red indication
on the detector and on the Control unit.
When the sensing element is cold again the alarm should be reset on the
control unit.

Important:
If other test equipments are used, for example cigarette lighter or heating gun,
make sure not to over-heat the detector by holding the heat-source to close to
the detector. This will damage the detectors, for example causing the plastic to
melt.

Smoke detectors
Smoke detectors are preferably tested with test gas equipment available from
Consilium.
User's Guide Chapter 13: Maintenance 13-2
CS3000

Spray test gas on to the detector during 1 second. Wait 10 seconds until new
gas is sprayed during 1 second. Repeat this procedure until the detector
indicates alarm with a red indication and the alarm is indicated on the control
unit.
After a while when the test gas has disappeared from the detector the alarm
should be reset on the control unit.

If other test methods are used, make sure not to damage the detector.

Flame detectors
Flame detectors may be tested with an ordinary cigarette lighter.
Turn up the flame to a height of approximately 5 cm.
Hold it in front of the detector at a distance of about 2-5 meters. Move the
lighter slowly during the test to obtain a flickering flame until alarm is
indicated with a red indication on the detector or on the address unit and on the
control unit.
After closing the lighter the alarm should be reset on the control panel.

Additional information
There are some other easy tests that concerned owners/ crews may perform at
the same time

Testing the LEDs and the display on the Control unit.

Press F4, F4, F1. Now all the indications on the Control unit should be active.

Cable break
No section units are answering.
- The cable is broken before the first section unit if no answer is received on a
single fed loop.
- The cable is broken before the first section unit and after the last section unit
the if the loop is a double fed loop.

Section units are answering.

Look for the last section units answering on each side of the loop. The cable
break is situated after or between the answering units.
Earth fault
Check the loops one by one.

1. Remove one loop at a time.

2. Reset the fault.
3. The loop is OK if the fault reappears. If this is the case reconnect the loop
again.
4. Repeat this procedure for all the loops.
5. When all the loops are tested examine each faulty loop in a conventional
way to locate the earth faults.
6. If the earth fault still remains after these steps, examine the cables to all
other devices connected to the fire alarm system.
Short circuit
No section units answers
Search for the short-circuits between the central unit and the first short circuit
isolator.

If one or more section units do not answer

Search for the short circuit between the fault reported short circuit isolators to
find the exact location of the fault.

The easiest way to find a short circuit is to divide the cable in two halves,
locate the short-circuit on one of the halves. Divide this half of the cable again
into two halves. Continue to divide the cable into halves until you have found
the short-circuit.

Appendix C:
Installation and operation addendum

Installation and Operation Addendum

for Salwico CS3000 and CS3004
as U.S. Coast Guard Approved System

The fire detection system must be installed and configured in accordance with Subpart 161.002 and
Subchapter J of Title 46 of the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, and with the 1993 or later version of
NFPA 72. This is in addition to any other requirements specific to the vessel and its route. Only those
components listed on the approved component list may be used.

The approved component list identifies those components that may be used in locations requiring an
exceptional degree of protection. Location requiring an exceptional degree of protection means a
location exposed to weather, seas, splashing, pressure-directed liquids, or similar moisture conditions.
These locations include--
(1) On deck;
(2) A machinery space;
(3) A cargo space;
(4) A location within a galley or pantry area, laundry, or water closet which contains a shower or
bath; and
(5) Other spaces with similar environmental conditions.

The fire detection system shall be installed as a fully addressable system. Any non-addressable
initiating device must be used with an addressing unit to provide an address for that device. Each
addressing unit shall be used to support only one device. Examples of non-addressable initiating
devices are the manual call point NS-CPWP and the UV-flame detector NS-DUV.

A trouble signal must be annunciated by the activation of the Models UR-2K and UR-2KN timers.
Timer UR-2K must be installed in a locker.

The fire control panels (CS3000 and CS3004) must be installed with two sources of external power.
The internal battery cannot be used to satisfy the requirement for a secondary source of power.
