1 A 13.6 kg block is supported by the spring shown. If the block is moved vertically downward from its
equilibrium position and released, determine (a) the period and frequency of the resulting motion, (b) the
maximum velocity and acceleration of the block if the amplitude of its motion is 53.3 mm. [0.392 s, 2.55 Hz,
0.855 m/s, 13.7 m/s2]

2 A 32 kg block is attached to a spring and can move without friction in a slot as shown. The block is in its
equilibrium position when it is struck by a hammer which imparts to the block an initial velocity of 250 mm/s.
Determine (a) the period and frequency of the resulting motion, (b) the amplitude of the motion and the
maximum acceleration of the block. [0.324 s, 3.08 Hz, 12.91 mm, 4.84 m/s2 ]
3 A simple pendulum consisting of a bob attached to a cord of length l = 800 mm oscillates in a vertical plane.
Assuming simple harmonic motion and knowing that the bob is released from rest when θ = 6°, determine (a)
the frequency of oscillation, (b) the maximum velocity of the bob. [0.557 Hz, 293 mm/s]

4 A 35 kg block is supported by the spring arrangement shown. The block is moved vertically downward from
its equilibrium position and released. Knowing that the amplitude of the resulting motion is 45 mm, determine
(a) the period and frequency of the motion, (b) the maximum velocity and maximum acceleration of the block.
[0.208 s, 4.81 Hz, 1.361 m/s, 41.1 m/s2]

in tension and compression. If end C of the rod is depressed slightly and released, determine (a) the frequency
of vibration, (b) the amplitude of the motion of point C, knowing that the maximum velocity of that point is
0.9 m/s. [3.36 Hz, 0.426 m]

attached to two springs, each of constant k = 13 kN/m. The initial tension in the belt is sufficient prevent
slipping. If the end C of the belt is pulled 25 mm to the right and released, determine (a) the period of
vibration, (b) the maximum angular velocity of the flywheel. [0.533 s, 0.492 rad/s]

8 The 9-kg uniform rod AB is attached to springs at A and B, each of constant 850 N/m, which can act
in tension or compression. If the end A of the rod is depressed slightly and released, determine (a) the
frequency of vibration, (b) the amplitude of the angular motion of the rod, knowing that the
maximum velocity of point A is 1.1 mm/s.
