It has been suggested that people are gaining more weight these days and spend less time on

fitness activities. There are various reasons for this issue and among several of them I can
mention that more people work remotely these days, spending hours in front of their
computers, and that fast food is extremely popular because it is actively promoted. However,
these problems can be resolved if companies offering remote work positions encourage their
employees to do sports by covering expenses on them and if governments implement stricter
regulations in terms of fast-food advertising on TV, banning it in prime-time.

Many companies switched to remote work due to the Covid-19 pandemic as it does not require
travelling to office, thus activity levels of workers all around the globe have decreased
dramatically. They spend a lot of their time at computer desks, and this can make obesity risks
higher. In order to prevent their employees from becoming overweight, companies should
include gym coverage as a benefit, encouraging them to be proactive and fit. For example,
Google offers 200$ monthly to its employees to spend for sport activities, making it clear that
not only does it help with weight control, but also increases productivity and work
performance.

Another reason of increasing average weight is that fast food promotions can be seen practically
everywhere nowadays, especially on TV, which affects people’s choice. Fast food full of high-
saturated fats gets extremely appealing, but such fats cause obesity, which may later increase
risks of heart attacks. By banning fast food ads in prime-time governments can make companies
selling fast food less recognizable, giving people opportunity to choose healthier food instead. A
one-month experiment of this kind was conducted in Austria last year, proving that companies
like McDonalds and KFC had less sales that month, which has been later mentioned in their
annual reports.

In conclusion, the problem of people becoming obese and less healthy worries the society of
today. It is caused mainly by remote work and fast-food advertising. By covering gym costs
companies can motivate employees to be fit, while governments should think of possible
restrictions for fast-food advertisements in prime-time, which will highly likely decrease
popularity of brands related to it. In addition, if the above-mentioned issues are resolved in the
nearest future, it will be possible to extend life expectancy and overall health level of many
people.
