'I Capture The Castle' is a story told by the narrator (Cassandra) who lives in an ancient
castle with her family (her father, step-mother, sister Rose and brother Thomas)_. The caStle
has no running water or central heating. In this passage, Cassandra has de~tded to take
a bath. She has heated up water and has put the water into a big metal contamer nea~ th e
fire in the kitchen that she can climb into. She has also created screens of sheets (Ilk~ a
tent) around the stove so that she can have her bath in privacy. As the passage begms,
she is just about to climb into the bath when Heloise, the family dog, interrupts her.

1 I was just getting into the bath when Heloise whined at the back door and had to be

2 let in. Of course she wanted to come and join me, which is a slight bore as she is no asset to a

3 bath - her loving paws are apt to scrape one painfully. However, she seemed sleepy and was

4 happy to doze by the fire and we settled down amicably. It was wonderfully cosy inside by

5 the tall, draught-proof screen; and the rosy glow from the fire turned the sheets to a

6 fascinating colour.

7 I believe it is customary to get one's washing over first in baths and bask afterwards;

B personally, I bask first. I have discovered that the first few minutes of a bath are the best and

9 are not to be wasted - my brain always seethes with ideas and life suddenly looks much

10 better than it did. So I bask first, wash second and then read as long as the hot water holds

11 out.

12 As I basked, I ate half my apple and meant to eat it all, but Heloise was lashing her

13 tail so hopefully that I shared it with her instead - her gratitude was so intense that I feared

14 she might get into the bath with me. I calmed her down, discouraged her from licking the

15 soap and had just started serious washing when there was a thump on the door.

16 I still can't imagine what made me call out: 'Come in.' I suppose I said it

17 automatically. I had just covered my face with soap, which always makes one feel rather

18 helpless, and when I rashly opened my eyes, the soap got into them; I was blindly groping for

19 the towel when I heard the door open. Heloise let forth a volley of barks and hurtled towards

2 o it - it was a miracle she didn't knock over the clothes horse and everything else that held up

2 1 my screen of sheets. The next few seconds were pandemonium with Hel barking her hardest

22 and two men trying to soothe her. I didn't call her off because I know she never b'tI es anyone

23 and I hated the idea of explaining that I was in the bath - particularly as I hadn't even a towel
24
to wrap around me; I had blinked my eyes open by then and realised I must have left it

25 somewhere in the kitchen. Mercifully, Heloise quietened down after a minute or so.

26 'Didn't you hear someone say 'Come in'?' said one of the men, and I realised that he

27 was an American. It was a pleasant voice, like the nice people in American films, not the

28 gangsters. He called out: 'Anyone home?' but the other man told him to be quiet, adding: 'I

29 want to look at this place first. It's magnificent.'

30 This voice puzzled me. It didn't sound English but it didn't sound American either. It

31 was a most unusual voice, very quiet and interesting.

32 'Do you realise that wall's part of an old castle?' it said.

33 This was not a happy moment as I thought he would come to look at the fireplace

34 wall, but just then Thomas came out on the staircase. The men explained that they had

35 turned down our lane by accident and their car was stuck in the mud. They wanted help to

36 get it out.

37 Thomas said that he would come and have a look and I heard him getting his boots.

38 'Wonderful place you have here,' said the unusual voice, and I feared they might ask

39 to look round. But the other man began talking about how stuck the car was, and in a minute

40 or so Thomas went off with them. I heard the door slam and heaved a sigh of relief.

41 But I did feel a little flat ; it was dull to think I had never even seen the men and never

42 would. I tried to imagine faces to go with the voices - and then suddenly realised that the

43 water was cooling and I had barely begun washing.

b) • Cassandra and Hcloisc were amicablc/ li::ding happy and fricndJy as Cassa ndra was in the bal b.
• 'Wonderfolly cosy'
• There were no draug!Hs, so Cassa ndra must have felt warm and comforta ble.
• The fire had a 'rosy glow' which sounds very pretty/nice. .
• The sheets were turned to a ' fascinating colour' which must have been 111cc to look at.
Also accept ' settled down'.
A~ccpt any logical reason, e.g. '" the draught-proof screen' gives me the impression that it is a tight
pnvate space, which is nice."
Make sure the reasons given come from 1hc boxed text which forms part of the question, rather than
anywhere else in the passage.
\Ve can accept correct reasons in parl b even if part a is wrong.
One mark per clear answer. Direct quotations arc fine as arc generalised comments.

3. 3 marks
Bask/wash/read
lf a student decides to write the whole quotation out ' I bask first, wash second and then read as long
as the hot water holds out' and ignore tl1c numbers 1,2 and 3, they can still be awarded full marks.
Students must put correct verbs in correct order to get all three marks. For example, if they write
'get in bath/wash/read' they get two marks {because one of the verbs is wrong - but two arc correct
and in the correct order). Or if they write ' bask/read/wash' they get one mark (all verbs arc correct
but only ' bask' is in the correct order).
A synonym for bask is fin e, e.g. relaxing. E.g., if students have paraphrased basking, washing and
reading, that's fin e, as long as they clearly understand what is meant.
Don't accept that she was ' not eating the whole apple'.

4. Accept: to relax/to lay around lazily/ luxuriously in warmth. Must have an aspect of ertjuying !mark
warmtl1 to relax and feel lazy.
Don't accept ' bathe'. We will allow ' relax' without warmth being mentioned (contra1y to mark scheme).
Don't allow ideas where candidates arc hedging, e.g. ' LO relax or do fun things'.

5. a) An apple. 3marks
b) Yes.
c) Her gratitude was so intense
- Hcloise was so grateful she tried to climb into the bath with Cassandra
- Cassandra had to stop Hcloise from climbing into the bath to give her a thank you cuddle
- Heloise was so happy and excited she tried to cat the soap.
DO NOT accept a quotation that comes before Cassandra shared the apple: cg, 'Heloisc was
lashing her tail so hopefully' .
Candjdatcs may wrongly associat e the wagging tail with the dog being pleased, but this action happens
BEFORE the apple is given. So, wagging tail (or similar) is wrong.
Allow a mark for: " Hcloise lashed her tai l and 'her gratitude was so intense"' even th ough half of the
answer is wrong. We must reward what is there (unless there is obvious blind copying of whole sections
of the text without any sense of understanding).

b) Heloise is only ' barking her hardest' so all her energy is going into barking not attacking.
T he two men try to 'soothe' Heloise: they are not frightened of being hurt by her.
Cassandra is clear that Heloise ' never tries to bite anyone.'
H cloise quietens down after a minute or so.
Accept anything reasonable from the entire passage which suggests that the dog is not dangerous.
It is possible for candidates to ge t points for part b even if part a is left blank, wrong, or both options
are ti cked. Part b can be rewarded marks if ifs clear that the candidate explains that the dog isn' t
dangerous.
One mark for each clear explanation (maximum of two marks).

Ensure that the candidates have clearly differentiated the two men. The information they write about
