1 Scope
This instruction covers the installation of spacers on Statnett's transmission system.
2 References
This Statnett specification incorporates by dated or undated reference, provisions from other

3 Definitions
Conductor Used in this specification to indicate all phase conductors, shield wires and OPGWs,
unless otherwise specified.
Shield wire "Shield wire" means shield wires and OPGWs, unless otherwise specified
Can Verbal form used for statements of possibility and capability, whether material,
physical or casual.
May Verbal form used to indicate a course of action permissible within the limits of the
specification.
Shall Verbal form used to indicate requirements strictly to be followed in order to conform to
the specification and from which no deviation is permitted, unless accepted by all
involved parties.
Should Verbal form used to indicate that among several possibilities, one is recommended as
particularly suitable, without mentioning or excluding others, or that a certain course of
action is preferred but not necessarily required.
4 Installation of spacers
4.1 Installation of spacers
Spacers shall be installed according to the supliers installation instruction using a calibrated torque
wrench.

4.1.1 Reinforced spacers

Reinforced spacers shall be installed over line guards / armour rods supplied with the spacers.
4.2 Orientation of the spacers

Care shall be taken that the spacers are installed according to the supliers instructions.
When installed on a duplex configuration the bolt head shall point upwards, see Figure 2 for
an example.

In a triplex configuration, the spacers shall be oriented so that the bolt heads point as shown on Figure
3. Figure 3 is just showing the orientation of the sppacers, not their spacing. Distances between
spacers on Figure 3 are not in scale, actual distance shall be 5 meters, see Figure 4.

5 Placement of spacers
5.1 Placement of spacers in span
See tables in the attachments to this document for placement of spacers for duplex and triplex
configurations. There are two placements tables for spacers:
 Areas with ice loads below 10 kg/m,with standard spacers – Annex 1
 Areas with ice loads equal to or higher than 10 kg/m, with reinforced spacers , Annex 2
Triplex spacer configurations shall use the same distance between each spacer placement as duplex
spacers, but each spacer placement requires 3 spacers in one set in order to space all sub-conductors
properly. The distances indicate the distance between central spacers in one group, see . The other
spacers in each set shall be placed 5 meters ahead and behind the central spacer, see Figure 4.
Maximum deviation from the tables is ± 2.5 meters.
Span length values shall be rounded up, e.g. a 161-meter span shall use the spacer placement of a
170-meter span. Adjustments from the table to reach actual span length should preferably be done in
the centremost subspan.
Spacers in spans that contain mid-span joints shall be installed as soon as possible to avoid conductor
damages.

5.2 Placement of spacers in a jumper loop without support string

Use rigid spacers with a 450mm conductor to conductor spacing. Place spacers evenly around loop as
shown below.

5.3 Placement of spacers in jumper loops with support strings

Figure 7 show the standard placement of spacers in loops with jumper loops. The mid phase loop is
supported by one or two V-strings depending on the line at the tower. A line post insulator supports the
outer phase loop when the angle is 4 gon or greater. Rigid spacers c-c 450 mm and 200 mm are used
in the loops. Consult the detail drawings in the Electromechanical assembly instruction.
