Learning Task 1

Read and analyze the scenario.

Your body breaks down food by making stomach acid, which is composed mostly of
hydrochloric acid (HCl). If your body makes too much stomach acid, you may suffer from an
upset stomach. Antacids like sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) can relieve an upset stomach by
combining with hydrochloric acid. This combination forms sodium chloride (NaCl), water (H 2O),
and carbon dioxide (CO2), reducing the amount of acid in the stomach.

Put a check on a substance either it belongs to reactant or product. Write the chemical
equations involved in the scenario.

Substances Reactant Product

Water (H2O)

Carbon dioxide (CO2)

Sodium chloride (NaCl)

Hydrochloric acid (HCl)

Sodium bicarbonate
(NaHCO3)

Chemical equation: NaHCO3 + HCl NaCl + CO2 + H2O

Is the chemical equation balance? _____________________________________________
