Sri Kalika Ashtakam

Sri Kalika Ashtakam is the Slokam in praise of and as prayer to Sri Kalika Devi, one of the
manifestations of Maa Sri Durga Devi. Sri Kalika Ashtakam is composed by Sri Adi Sankaracharya. It
contains two parts, Dhyanam and Prayer. The benefits of chanting this Slokam are embedded in the text
itself. Sri Kalika Ashtakam is presented in Devanagari and English scripts with a simple English
translation.

ध्यानं / Dhyaanam

गलद्रक्त मुण्डावली कण्ठ माला

महोघोर रावा सुदंष्ट्रा कराला
वववस्त्रा श्मशानालया मुक्त केशी
महा-काल कामाकुला कावलकेयम् (1)

Humble Salutations to Sri Kalika Devi. She adorns the garland of severed skulls around Her neck. She
makes the reverberating noise and Her teeth are protruding. She is fierce to look at. She roams around
the cremation ground with the free appearance. She is Sri Kalika Devi, the Goddess of Darkness eager to
mingle with Sri Maha Kaala, the God of Darkness (or God of time).
भुजे वाम युग्मे वशरोऽवसं दधाना

Humble Salutations to Sri Kalika Devi. In Her left hands, She holds the sword and the severed head. Her
right hands depict abhaya (blessing protection) and varadha (blessing abundance) mudras. Her
magnificent mid-body is slightly bent because of heavy upper body. Her lips are of shining red with a
smile at the corner.

Humble Salutations to Sri Kalika Devi. Her ear rings depict the symbol of corpses. She has the beautiful
long hair. Her waist ornament is made of severed hands. She is mounted on the corpses with jackals
making sounds from all the four sides. Sri Kalika Devi governs in such scenario.

ववरञ्च्यावद दे वास्त्रयस्ते गुर्ास्त्रीन्

Humble Salutations to Sri Kalika Devi. Sri Brahma and the other two of the Trinity such as Sri Shiva and
Sri Vishnu had chosen the three Gunas of Sri Kali as their virtues. They have considered Sri Kalika as
their Deity of worship and they had become the pioneer of Devas. Sri Kalika Devi, You are beyond any
beginning. You are the divine nascent origin for the emergence of the Devas. You are the divine origin of
all the oblations and the You are the prime receiver of sacrifices. The worlds have originated from You.
Even the Devas cannot discern Your mystical divine nature.

जगन्मोहनीयं तु वाग्वावदनीयं
सुहृत्पोविर्ी शत्रु संहारर्ीयम्

the speaking words. Your magnificence protects the good-hearted persons and destroys the enemies
(with evil intents). You have the authority to quell the speech and have power to destroy unnecessary
talks (displaying vanity and pride). Even the Devas cannot discern Your mystical divine nature.

Similar to the wish fulfilling creeper, You bless the fulfillment of the ardent wishes of your devout
devotees. Hence, the world always revers You and is thankful to You. Even the Devas cannot discern
Your mystical divine nature.

which the impurities are cleaned with meditation on You, Puja to You and recitation of Your name and
glory. Even the Devas cannot discern Your mystical divine nature.
वचदानन्दकन्दं हसन् मन्दमन्दं
शरच्चन्द्र कोवट प्रभा िुञ्जवबम्बम्
मुनीनां कवीनां हृवद द्योत यिं

Humble Salutations to Sri Kalika Devi. Your appearance is that of Supreme Spiritual Consciousness.
Your manifestation is felt with Your gentle smile. Your form is that of the moon of the autumn sky. Your
form radiates like the million rays of moon. The Sages and the Scholars feel Your presence in the deep
cave of their hearts (and minds). Even the Devas cannot discern Your mystical divine nature.

महामेघकाली सुरक्तावि शुभ्रा

कदावचद् वववचत्राकृवतयोगमाया
न बाला न वृ द्धा न कामातुरावि
स्वरूिं त्वदीयं न ववन्दस्मि दे वािः (9)

mahaa-megha-kaalee su-raktha-api shubhraa

kadhaa-chidh vichithraa-kruthir-yoga-maayaa
na baalaa na vrudhDhaa na kaamaathura-api

Humble Salutations to Sri Kalika Devi. Your appearance is as dark as the loaded cloud. You also appear
reddish. You are as pure as white. Your appearance cannot be confined to any manifestation as You take
many hues due to Your Yogic attributes. You are neither a small baby girl nor an old woman nor a young
woman. Even the Devas cannot discern Your mystical divine nature.
क्षम स्वािराधं महागुप्त भावं
मया लोकमध्ये प्रकावशकृतं यत्
तव ध्यानिूतेन चािल्य भावात्
स्वरूिं त्वदीयं न ववन्दस्मि दे वािः (10)

mentioned Your manifestation and nature as understood by me to this world. I have done the revelation
just like a child. My heart is made pure through my meditation on You. Even the Devas cannot discern

यवद ध्यान युक्तं िठे द् यो मनुष्यस्

तदा सवालोके ववशालो भवेच्च
गृहे चाष्ट्वसस्मद्धमृाते चावि मुस्मक्तिः

thadhaa sarva-loakae vishaaloa bhavech-cha

Humble Salutations to Sri Kalika Devi. The person who sincerely reads and recites this Slokam shall
become a great person in all the worlds. Such person will be blessed and bestowed with the eight
siddhies while living and shall attain liberation / moksha at the end. Even the Devas cannot discern Your
mystical divine nature.
Kalika Raksha Kavach
This short (but essential part) Kali Kavach is from Brahma Vaivarta Puran and was told by Lord Shiva
to Lord Vishnu. Continuous practice of this Kavach builds a magnetic energy shield around the
devotee which repels the negative energies and helps attracting positive and good vibrations only.
Goddess Kali purifies the conscience and shield those who chant this kali kavach from evil. If recited
with full faith and devotion just once in the morning, this kavach can provide complete protection to
the follower.

Kali Kavach keeps the worshipper protected for as long as he is worshipping Kali and her
protective shield. Goddess Kali has been popular to come for the protection of all those
who believe they are weak and surrender to this Goddess. All you have to do is accept
your flaws and surrender to this Goddess. The Kavach of this Goddess will begin working
when it knows you have fully surrendered to it and started believing in its power. Until
then, it will keep testing you.
Kali Kavach keeps your enemies away from you. Let these enemies be as powerful as they
want to be. With the help of this Goddess, you can keep them away. An enemy would
always want to destroy you. Even if he is not showing it on your face, he would always be
sending negative energies towards you.
Kali Kavach is not a very popular thing, even though a lot of Kali followers and
worshippers are aware of it. Therefore, when you worship the Kavach, it keeps you
protected all the very more, knowing that you are one of the very few people who believe
in its powers. It is rightly said that the less known or popular things work more, since the
entire energy is diverted towards you, and a few other people using the Kavach to protect
themselves.
If you want to protect someone else using this Kavach, you can do the same. Nothing can
be more wonderful than having something to protect the one you truly love. Whether it is
your husband, wife, child, sister or just a close friend, you can use the Kavach to help
them. Just believe in what you are doing and let the other person know that you are doing
it for their very own good. However, they should accept what you are offering to them
and should not be reluctant towards the Kavach or its energies.
The most wonderful thing about Kali Kavach is that both the genders can worship the
same. While there are some orthodox parts of information that say women can’t worship
Goddess Kali, but the truth is that Goddess Kali is a woman herself. She is Shakti and thus,
it is not that women cannot worship her or the Kavach. Every woman is a mother,
whether she has conceived a child or not. A woman is a particle of Shakti herself, but the
only thing is that most of the women do not realize their very own powers. Those who
want to invoke Kali in their spine and protect themselves, or someone they deeply adore,
can definitely use Kali Kavach.
There is no harm caused to your enemy. This means you do not enter into any Karmic cycle
by causing any harm by using Kali Kavach to protect yourself or someone else.
Rudrayamala Kalika kavach

It is a highly propitious hymn which eradicates enemies; it provides attractiveness,

admiration, and all kinds of auspiciousness to worshiper, including virtuous son and
grandchildren. It is appropriate to recite these hymns during the hours of early dawn, or
during the hours of worship, or during the hours of dusk, it provides all kinds of siddhis to
worshiper, I shall prostrte before supreme Goddess Sri Kalika who symbolizes auspiciouness,
she eradicates all the enemies of the worshiper, she provides abundance of prosperity and
auspiciousness to worshiper, she is Kalika who is worshiped by all the deities.

Kailasa shikaraseenaam deva deva Jagat Gurum,

Sankaram pari pracha Parvathi Parameshwaram.

Sitting on the top of the Kailasa mountain Pravathi in return asked,

Sankara who is the teacher of all devas as well as the universe.

Parvathi asked :

Bhagwan , deva devesa, devaanaam bhoghada prabho,

Prabroohi may Mahadeva gopyam chedh yadhi hey Prabho.

Shathroonaam yena nasa syadhathmano rakshaanam bhaveth,

Parameswaryamathulam labhedhyena hi thad vada.

Oh God, Oh deva of devas, Oh lord of the pleasure of the devas,

Oh Great God , please tell me that secret, if it is permitted,
By which enemies can be destroyed and souls can be protected,
As I want it from your word as you are the incomparable God.
Bhairava Uvacha:
Bhairava told:

Vakshyami they maha devi Sarva dharma vidhamvara,

Adbutham kavacham devyaa Sarva kama prasadakam.

I am seeing you who is the great goddess who formulated all Dharmas,
And would tell you that wonderful armour of the Goddess which helps to fulfill all wishes.

Viseshatha shathru nasam sarva rakshakaram nrunaam,

Sarvarishta prasamanam , sarvaabhadra vinasanam.

Specially it destroys all enemies and protects all beings,

And pacifies all problems and destroys all great dangers.

Sugadham bhogadham chaivavaseekaranamuthamam,

Shatru sanga kshayam yanthi bhavanthi vyadhi peeditha.

It leads to pleasures, makes available enjoyments and also results in great attraction,
And it reduces the number among groups of enemies and they would all be affected by
illness.

Dukhino, jwarnam chaiva Swabheeshta drohina sthadha,

Bhoga moksha pradham chaiva kalika kavacham padeth.

For those with sorrows or fever or those with selfish enemies ,

A reading of the armour of Kalika grants enjoyment and salvation

Om asya Sri Kalika kavachasya Bhairava rishi , anushtup Chanda ,

sri Kalika devatha , Shatru samharattham jape viniyoga

For the armour of Mahakali , the sage is Bhairava , the meter is anushtup , the goddess is
Maha Kali and it is being read to kill all ones enemies.
Dhyanam
Meditative verses

Dhyayeth kalim Maha mayaam , trinethraam bahu roopineem,

Chathur bhujaam lalajihwam , poorna chandra nibhananaam.

I meditate on that Kali, who is a great enchantress, has three eyes,

Who has several forms, who has four hands. Who has a wagging toungue,
And who resembles the full moon in her form.

Neelothpala dala shyaamaam , shathru sanga vidharineem,

Nara mundam thadha gadgam, kamalam cha varam thadha.

She is of the colour of the petal of the flower of the blue lily,
She drives away the enemy crowd and she carries in her hand,
The headless corpse of men and carries a sword, lotus flower and shows the hand in form of
blessing.

Nirbhayaam Raktha vadanaam , damshtrali ghora roopineem,

Sa aatahasa asana sthudhaam , devim sarvadaan cha digamaram.

She is without any fear , has a blood drenched face,

She is fierce looking, , She is worshipped by saints,
She is Sitting on yogic pose, She is goddess who is everywhere,
And has a clothing resembling the eight directions.

Savasana sthithaam kalim munda mala vibhooshithaam,

Ithi dhyathwaa Maha Kalim thasthu kavacham padeth.

Meditating on Mahakali as sitting in the yogic pose of corpse ,

And decorating herself with a garland of severed heads,
You have to read this armour.

Hoom roopini , maha kali , rakshasmaan devi Sarvadhaa.

Oh Goddess whose form is “Sreem Hreem Iym “ and who releases us from ties of this world,
Oh Goddess whose from is “Hoom” , Oh great Kali , please protect me always.

Yaya shumbho hatho dhaithyo , Nishumbascha Mahasura,

Vairi nasaya vandhe tham kalikaam Sankara priyaam.

Oh Goddess who killed Shumbhasura and then the great asura called Nishumbha,
I salute you , who is Kalika and one dear to Lord Shiva for destruction of my enemies

Hraam ,hreem Kalikayai mama shathroon samarpayami swaha.

Vairina pralayam yanthi vyaadhithaa vaa bhavanthi hi,

SAhasra padanath sidhi kavachasya bhaveth thada,

Thath karyaani cha sidhyanthi yadha Sankara bashitham.

Those who read it one thousand times would get mastery,

And his jobs would be very easily done like the talk of Lord Shiva.

Smasana angaaramaadhaya choornam kruthwa prayathnatha,

Padhodhakena pishtwaa thallikhelloha sakhaya,

Bhoomou sathrun heena roopanthara sirasa sthadha,

Hastham dathwa thu hrudaye kavacham thu swayam padeth.

Sathro prana prathishtam thu kuryath manthrena manthra vith,

Hanyadasthra prakarena Sathro gacha yamakshayam.

Jabhad angara thapena bhavanthi jwaritha brusam,

Prochannair vamapadena daridro bhavathi druvam.

worship of the Goddess and I may give a wrong and dangerous import to these verses.)
Vairi nasakaram proktham kavacham vasyakarakam ,
Paramaiswarydham chaiva puthra pouthra vrudhikaram.

Apart from resulting in destruction of enemies, this prayer ,

Can attract people , result in great wealth and increase, the number of your sons and grand
sons.

Prabhata samaye chaiva poojaa kale cha yathnatha,

SAyamkale thadha paatath sarva sidhir bhaved dhruvam

If read in the morning or at the time of worship,

Or in the evening , it is definite that you would get occult powers.

Sathru rucchadanam yathi desaath vaa vichytho bhaveth,

Paschad kinkarathamethi sathyam sathyam na samsaya.

Chanting it against enemies , you would be able to free your country,

And later make them your slaves. This no doubt is the truth.

Sathru nasa kare devi sarva sampath kare shubhe ,

Sarva deva sthuthe devi Kalike thwaam namamyaham.

I salute you Kalika who is the goddess who kills the enemies,
Who is capable of blessing with all type of wealth,
Who is auspicious and is the prayed by all devas.

Ithi Rudra Yamale Kalika kavacham sampoornam

Thus ends the armour of Kali which occurs in Rudra Yamala.
