How It’s Made - Marbles

Marbles are small balls of glass that have been played with since ancient Egyptian and
roman times. The Batch production method is used to create the marbles as each
marble goes through the same stage of production at the same time before the next and all are
similar in the end.
To begin the process recycled glass from previously faulty marbles is melted in a kiln
at 1204 degrees Celsius and after 16 hours a door is opened at the bottom of the kiln and the
molten glass flows out. It is cut by a shearing device that cuts the stream every half a second
forming segments called slugs that become marbles. To make different size marbles the
machine is adjusted. The slugs slide down shoots landing between grooves on the spinning
cast. The spinning keeps the slugs from sticking after 72 hours the marbles will be cooled and
ready. The color was already determined in the kiln and at the final stage, they are inspected.
