A nice apartment
A cushy job
A loving girlfriend
Kind friends
A supportive family
I was wrong.
I’d ticked all the boxes, but I’d forgotten one of the most important boxes of all.
Purpose.
People told me I was crazy: “Scott, what are you doing?! Quitting your 9-5 is risky! What if
things go wrong?”
Now, people are asking me how I travel the world whilst doing what I love.
This is why I’ve put this document together. It’s the guide I wish I had when I decided to
become a solopreneur over 4 years ago.
For each category, there are sub-categories and articles. You can jump to the ones that are
most helpful. (You can use the navigation on the left-hand side of this doc.)
I’ve pulled out the most important points so you can quickly get the information you need.
These points are under TL;DR (too long, don’t read).

TL;DR:
- “People with a well-paying job ask my advice because they want to quit to become
full-time artists.
“But full-time artists ask my advice because they’re finding it impossible to make
money.
“For both of them, I prescribe the lifestyle of the happiest people I know. 1) Have a
well-paying job. 2) Seriously pursue your art for love, not money.”

TL;DR:
- Step #1: Build your “mental health stack” — Check off your diet, exercise, and sleep.
Consider other self-care practices, like meditation and therapy. It’s best to build the
habits before you need them.
- Step #2: Practice weekly “fear-setting”— Your fears may look absurd when they’re
captured on paper.
- Step #3: Try Lex Fridman’s mantra routine — Positive self-talk can put you in an
abundance mindset.
- Step #4: Embrace “slow productivity” — Zoom out. If you achieved three great things
in the next five years, what would they be and why?

- “The answer to every question I get about creating digital products could be
answered with this line: ‘work away at it for 5+ years and you’ll get there.’ This is the
advice I wish I understood early on.” — Tim Denning
- “Success isn’t that difficult. It merely involves taking twenty steps in a singular
direction. Most people take one step in twenty directions.” — Anthony J. Yeung
- Share a 3-year plan with your close family and friends before you quit your job. Try
and answer the following:
- Show your current financial situation — Do you have savings in the bank? Are
you making money online? If so, is this enough to cover your bills? How will
you scale it?
- Describe your best-case and worst-case scenarios — Be realistic. Tackle any
doubts you have with the fear-setting practice.
- Write down your main goals for the next three years — Draw up a separate
six-month plan after attending Google University (more details in Part II of this
guide).

travelling as a digital nomad.
- Attend one new event alone each month of an interest that intrigues you. Make it a

start flowing.

job:
- A year of runway for financial stability and peace of mind
- A portfolio of ten posts, including samples on my website and guest posts on
others
- A website to house my portfolio and promote my services
- A semi-decent writing process (i.e. idea generation, outlining, etc.)
- A steady client” - Carter Kilmann
- Establish an LLC
- Open business bank accounts
- Revise my monthly budget
- Set S.M.A.R.T. goals
- Figure out rates
- Land more clients” - Carter Kilmann
- “Expenses are the best friend of a creator’s finances. Last month, I spilled noodles
over my laptop and the juices destroyed the insides. The bill to fix it? Around $800.
Ouch.
Yet if I paid this through my personal account when I was an employee, I’d have
needed to earn around double to pay it off. This is because taxes took away half of
my gross income.
As a business expense, I paid out of top-line revenue so I only needed to earn $800
to pay off $800.” - Amardeep Parmar

TL;DR:
- Step #1: Buy a fancy notepad with blank pages — Inside, include the following
pages. The order is up to you. These are just to get you started:
- Your goals for the next 12 months. I recommend no more than five.
- Your dream home. Look on Pinterest. I found my dream cinema with drapes
and popcorn machines.
- 100 life goals. Whatever pops into your head, write them down. You can
always cross them out.
- Your dreams for the future. Think of these like your life goals. Go big!
- Your favourite questions. Here’s one of mine: “Am I complicit in creating
conditions I say I don’t want?” — Tim Ferriss
- Your role models. Maybe they’re famous. Maybe they’ve hot. Maybe they’re
freaking awesome! Whatever the reason, write down their names.
- Your values. We’ll come back to this.
- Step #2: Flick through it every night for five minutes — You’re not looking for
answers. You’re feeding your brain.

all about experimenting.

TL;DR:
- The concept of an “ideal ordinary week” is simple. You look a couple of years into the
future and start planning your week. It’s ideal because it’s your choice. It’s ordinary
because it’s boring.
- Conduct a monthly audit of your time. Use a tool like rescuetime.com. These five
questions can help you take back control of your hours:
1. Which activities give you energy and which ones take it away?
2. If you had to spend money to see this person, would you spent it? (If the
answer’s not “hell yes”, it’s no.)
3. Are you inventing things to avoid the important?
4. If you had ten years left, what would you stop doing?
5. If money and society weren’t factors, would you still do this?
- What do you want? Stare at this question until your eyeballs bleed. It’s the only one
that matters.

TL;DR:
- Google University is a phrase Tom Kuegler coins in Design Your Dream Life. His
belief is this: If you want to learn a new skill, Google can teach you how.
- Jump online and search for the skill you want to learn more about. You’re looking for
practical, actionable insights. Paste your learnings into a Google doc and re-read any
articles you may previously saved to your bookmarks.

TL;DR:
- Step #1: Write down 100 goals — Don’t worry if you change your mind. You can use
these questions to review them:
- On a scale of 1–10, how likely is it I can achieve this goal in six months?
- On a scale of 1–10, how excited am I by this goal?
- Will achieving this goal make other goals easier or unnecessary?
- Step #2: Choose five of these goals to work on for the next six months — These
goals are going to be based on the following five categories:
scottstockdale.co.uk
1. Work
2. Relationships
3. Location
4. House
5. Hobbies
- Step #3: Attend Google University (see above) — You want practical, actionable
steps to work towards your goals. Nothing fluffy. Include links to articles in case you
want to refer to them at a later date.
- Step #4: Set dates — After attending Google University and detailing your goals, it’s
time to attach dates. To do this, work backwards from the end goals and realise what
you need to complete to stay on track.
- Step #5: Journal daily — Spend ten minutes journalling in your Goals Google doc.
Type whatever pops into my head. Download your subconscious thoughts. This will
help keep you accountable because there’s nowhere to hide.

TL;DR:
- Medium.com is a platform that gives writers an opportunity to make money from their
writing. You can think of it as the YouTube of writing. However, you need 100
followers to start making money on the platform.
- I publish 1-2 articles per week on Medium and average $500/month from it.
- The above articles are pretty short. I recommend checking them out if you want to
start earning money on Medium.

TL;DR:
scottstockdale.co.uk
- Step #1: Build a portfolio of work — You can do that on medium.com. I’ve been
writing on this platform since September 2020 and have published over 190 articles.
You don’t need this many. Five is enough.
- Step #2: Apply for jobs on Write Jobs PLUS+ — This is a paid Patreon job board.
Apply to jobs that take your fancy. Link to your most popular articles and any client
work you’ve done when you apply for jobs.
- Step #3: Slash your expenses — Being financially stable will help take the pressure
off your writing.
- Step #4: Keep practising — You’re only as good as your last article.

TL;DR:
- There’s no right or wrong way to do this. You simply want to tell the world that you’re
leaving the corporate world to become a freelance writer. LinkedIn is a great place to
announce this.
- Niharikaa Kaur Sodhi posted one sentence on LinkedIn. “Today I officially start my
journey of being self-employed as a writer.” It generated over 1 million views.
- Carter Kilmann went with a longer, more orthadox post. It helped him land his first
three clients.
- Look at the profiles of creators who are winning. Copy them. Optimise your headshot,
banner image, tagline, and about section. If you’re not how to, copy me. My profile’s
by no means perfect, but it’s a good start.

TL;DR:
- By sharing your work online, potential clients may reach out. They want to work with
you. Here’s what to do when this happens:
- Step #1: See if you can get them to share their budget — Negotiating rates can be
tricky, but be direct upfront. When potential clients reach out, try to get a rough
estimate of their budget. People don’t like committing to anything without discussion,
so ease their comfort by saying you won’t hold them to any number. This will save
you so much time. I’ve jumped on calls and sent proposals, only to realise the
potential client doesn’t have the budget I require.
- Step #2: Jump on call — This will help you understand what they’re looking for and
how you can help.
- Step #3: Write a proposal — This doesn’t need to be fancy. A simple Google doc will
do. Check out the articles above to see what this might look like.
- Step #4: Decide on your pricing — My first client wanted one blog post per month. I
considered all the steps (writing, research, etc) and asked myself how long this would
take. Next, I considered an hourly rate that would make this worth my time. Slide up
and feel the energetic shift. You want to go from “not worth my time” to “yeah, I’d do
that”.

TL;DR:
- Consider outsourcing to a virtual assistant. Following the process in the article that’s
highlighted bold can help you save 10+ hours a week.
- Use a platform like Notion or Evernote to store your content ideas. A pen and paper
is also effective. Then, apply parallel processing to your writing (i.e. work on multiple
articles simultaneously).
- Batch your writing tasks and purposefully generate five ideas a day. The latter will
help buld your creativity muscle.
- You can use tools like descript.com and otter.ai to repurpose video & audio content
into written content.
- Consistently put out content on one platform for two years and your life will change.
Once you’ve mastered one platform, add another.
- Build meaningful connections and collaborate when possible. We all want to work
with people we know, like, and trust.

TL;DR:
- Step #1: Set up email software from day one — I chose ConvertKit because it’s
recommended by my favourite creators. There are many to choose from.
scottstockdale.co.uk
- Step #2: Create a simple landing page so people can sign up to your email list —
Keep it simple. Minimal text, a single photo, and a clean background will do the trick.
Looking for inspo? Check out verygoodcopy.com
- Step #3: Write content and share it online — At the end of every article/blog you
write, add a call to action (CTA). A CTA is just a single sentence that tells people to
join your email list. Most importantly, it explains why. A good call to action is simple,
concise, and gives the reader a reason to click the link which takes them to your
landing page.
- Step #4: Create a useful lead magnet that exceeds a subscriber’s expectations —
Most people won’t just give you their email address. You have to work for it. This is
where lead magnet’s come in. A lead magnet is simply something you give away for
free in return for a reader’s email address. Examples of lead magnets are ebooks,
email courses, checklists, or a free consultation with you over a video call. The key is
to make it relevant and useful for your intended audience.
- Step #5: “Build the list. Email the list.” — Most creators recommend emailing your list
once a week. I email my list once every two weeks. Either way, be helpful. Care
about your subscribers. Give them free content. Help them with real problems.
Survey these superfans to learn about them.
- Step #6: Segment your list — A segment just means if you have an email list of
10,000 people, you divide them up into different audiences. Some email subscribers
may hate you selling stuff to them. Some may want to hear from you daily. Some may
only want to hear from you weekly.
- Step #7: Send a welcome message to new subscribers — Bonjoro lets you send
personalised videos to people who join your list. It’s a neat way to add a personal
touch.
- Don’t send newsletters because you have to. Send them because you want to.

TL;DR:
scottstockdale.co.uk
- “The best plans start simple.” A good idea on its own without execution isn’t worth
much. A not-so-good idea brought to life is better. A brilliant idea and brilliant
execution is the holy grail.
- “Thrill them and they’ll tell everyone.” When you make customers your priority, they
become cheerleaders.
- “One of the secrets to getting what you want in life is creating the perception that you
don’t need a thing.
“That can be a difficult energy to project — especially when you’re struggling — but
committing to that perception will make you more attractive professionally, personally,
and even romantically.”

TL;DR:
- You likely have $1,000 on your Google Drive. See if you can turn docs into email list
lead magnets or online course downloadables.
- Say yes to opportunities that have a huge upside. If you can help someone “paint
their own canvas”, even better.
- Keep it simple. Coaching is helping people meet their goals. That’s it. You don’t need
lots of bells & whistles.
