A person without a goal achieves nothing in life.

2. Approach

The new worker approached her boss to ask for a raise.

3. Cognition

Recent research shows that young children develop their skills of

cognition from their childhood experiences and social interactions.

4. Perception

Your perception of the world around you is primarily dictated by your five

senses.

5. Acquired

At International Book Fair, she finally acquired the book she was looking

for a long time ago.

identification.

EXPRESS OPINIONS

1. Oskar Pfungst proved that Clever Hans wasn’t able to solve

mathematical problems. Do you still believe that Hans showed

intelligence by learning to “read” the movements of his questioners

and audience members?

Yes, no doubt Hans demonstrated his intelligence by being able to read

people’s reactions, and knowing where he had to stop in order to get the

right answer. Apparently, Hans may have done this unconsciously, but

he has certainly shown that animals are so unique as long as they

demonstrate their intelligence. Certainly, horses aren’t the only animals

that can demonstrate their intelligence through these little challenges, but

also dogs like monkeys have been a clear example that they are also

animals whose qualities have been advancing and improving over time.

2. Temple Grandin feels that seizure alert dogs are showing signs of

high intelligence. Others may say that what they do is really just an

example of animals reacting based on instinct. What is your

opinion? Explain.
From the information that has been obtained from reading and also from

the latest animal behaviors that can be witnessed daily, I would say

that animals have been developing intelligence based on their

environment, who clearly also do so by reacting to their instincts.

But there are many viable paths that could explain why they react to a

seizure, and I think they confront their abilities by proving that they

can save human lives. Obviously, dogs are trained so that they can

know what to do if an accident like the ones already mentioned happens.

3. Share examples of animal behavior you have witnessed that you

think exhibit intelligence. Do these examples relate to Temple

Grandin’s idea of what animal intelligence is?

I have a dog of approximately 7 years, which certainly has surprised me

during the time that has lived with me, I could say that it is a unique dog,

and certainly it is. Over the years, he has shown me that he is a member

of the family as he has copied certain 7 behavior that is equal to those of

my family. He knows how to identify the meaning of different words and

the things he must do at the right times. His behavior has generated

controversy in my family, and it is that it has undoubtedly left us

surprised, although these actions may be done unconsciously.

EXPRESS OPINIONS

1. Leo was “ten times her age.” Would you marry someone older than

you? By how much? What possible advantages or disadvantages

are there to marrying someone much older than you?

I could not marry someone who is ten times older than me, this person

can be really awesome and attractive but there is simply no way that I’m

marrying him. However, if I married someone older, it could be ten

years, no more. There are many disadvantages to marrying someone

much older than you, for example, this person may have certain very

serious health problems that require special treatment and that he or she

may not be able to leave the hospital or that he or she cannot do without

a nurse on the side and this will become something insufferable for me.

2. The story mentions that with the Process, “these days you could

look as young as you like.” What age would you choose to look if

you were having the Process? Why?

If I had the chance, I think I’d want to look like I did when I was five, it

will be awesome. The reason is because I have seen several

photographs of myself at that age that I simply had the illusion of being
able to go back to that time where I was so innocent and where I

should not worry about anything. I’m really fond of at that picture.

Also, I looked very tender, my parents always said that I looked like a

drawing called little Lulu, I think that they said this because I was a little

chilly as a child.

3. Leo has had many different careers. “He reinvents himself every

decade or two. that’s as necessary to him as the Process itself.”

Why do you think he changes careers so oſten? Would you want to

reinvent yourself every decade or two? Why or why not?

He didn´t take this as a impetuous decision, I think the main reason he

changes careers is because he wants to be able to focus on something

new, you mean he wants to learn new things and be able to expand his

knowledge in another field of study, this is why he studied many

disparate subjects. Likewise, this opens the doors for various types of

professional work in the future, I would also say it is not to get bored and

have something in which you can keep busy.

UNIT 6: MAKING A DIFERRENCE

VOCAVULARY TASK:

1. Passion

Football arouses a good deal of passion among its supporters.

2. Proudly

My mom proudly speaks of my achievements to her friends.

very organized and plan everything to detail.

4. Satisfaction

Some people find a certain satisfaction in helping others.

5. Determined

want to have the day free to celebrate.

6. Proposal

It was not a surprise that Luciana has accepted his proposal.

7. Donate

She was willing to donate a large amount of money to families in need.

8. Admiring

Is admiring how easy it is for her to solve math exercises. I take lots of

minutes to solve one, while she does it in 2-3 minutes.

9. Devote

He devotes most of his time to his paintings.

10. Inspired
Marita felt inspired after watching that superheroes movie.

11. Manage

My sister who always is busy, learned how to manage better her time.

12. Thrilled

I was so thrilled when I saw him.

EXPRESS OPINIONS

1. Justin was able to combine something he loved to do with

philanthropic work. Is it very important to love what you are

volunteering to do? Why?

Of course, a person who is a volunteer must love or feel passion for what

he/she is going to do, because this would be better before the

development of the activities that must be executed in order to benefit

the people or organizations to which they are volunteers. Many of

the volunteers start at a young age and then start forming large groups

that help thousands of people. Apart from that it is something that they

are doing without asking for anything in return or receiving something, so

it is a job in which they do not seek to be benefited but nothing more than

help and feel satisfaction with their work.

2. Who do you think received more from Justin’s philanthropic work,

Justin or the people that he gave the bikes to? Explain.

I think both cases received something in return, in the case of Justin I

think he received more in return because he helped many people

who needed him as a medium of entertainment. Likewise, he could

start a great project that it was a challenge at first, in which he gained

experiences in many aspects, such as being able to become more

sociable and could also improve his skills about repairing and donating

bicycles, proving that he could make the dreams of many people into

realities. In the case of the people who helped, they gained many things

in return, such as being able to have more resources that would benefit

them and being able to count on support as great as that provided by

Justin

3. No one forced Justin to do what he did. Do you believe this makes

Justin an exceptional young man? Explain

Of course, he has proven unique in what he does, in not caring about the

time spent or the money or materials that have had to be used to actually

make his plan. Today, there are many young people who dedicate

themselves to various things that help the world, that is 20 to say that

they start helping a small group and then continue to advance until they

can reach more people, which undoubtedly makes each one exceptional

and unique in what they do.

CREATE

Imagine you are a reporter interviewing the people below. How would they

respond to the questions? Write answers using the words given. Change

the word form or tense if necessary.

Justin Lebo: One of my passions is fixing bikes and i sit around and see that it

could be beneficial for everyone to have one, so one of my greatest challenges

is to be able to give bikes as a gift to those who really need them and inspire

them to continue doing that with others.

Director of the Kilbarchan School: I feel very grateful that a former member of

this school has proposed to make a donation to each member of this school, for

which I will be in charge of managing this donation so that every bike ends up

arriving to all students.

Student supporting mandatory volunteering: I agree with mandatory

volunteering because it is a way to feel proud of yourself and make a

contribution to our society but it is very important that you figure out each

volunteer because you need to relate with the causes you like, for example,

being a volunteer in a place where donations are received and then delivery

them to people who really need it.

Student opposing mandatory volunteering: Mandatory volunteering is an

oxymoron because sometimes you don't find out the right time to do this

activity, for some people it's a challenge to manage their time everyone has

different activities every day and this mandatory volunteering puts their activities

on pause and sometimes we feel indignant because we have to do things we

don't want and enjoy, which can be very stressful.

EVALUATION
How intelligent are animals? author Gita Simonsen discusses the problem of
what scientists do to asses intelligence and their incredible insight into animals.
Too often our animal intelligence tests are based on how well animals can
imitate human behavior. A clear example of the intelligence of animals the
author tells us about dolphins, they live in complex social groups and have
evolved to have highly-developed brains, dolphins brain have particular, are
pretty comparable to the brains of humans, but there is only one obstacle that
prevents them from demonstrating "How intelligence they can be" and that is
communication, they can not talk to humans.

A critical case was the study by British scientists that other signs of intelligence
can be shown in animals such as fish, bees, and birds. Still, this intelligence
can't be compared with humans because every species are different and have
other skills.

In summary, Gita Simonsen concludes that scientists need to develop another

method to compare the intelligence of animals of different species not just one
method could be available because every animal has different skills o different
ways to show us their intelligence and not compare it with humans.

CORRECTION OF THE EVALUATION

In Extreme perception and animal intelligence by Temple Grandin and
Catherine Johnson, explain to us about the instincts and skills about many
animals like dogs that are good as an X-ray machine or detecting drugs a
hundred times better that a human. Perceptual ability doesn't make
animals genius, that’s why Scientifics as Dr. Pfungst makes different
studies to realize how these animals use perception in their lives. Seizure alert
dogs are an example of perception. As an example, we have Connie Standley
that live in Florida, that apparently owns two dogs that can predict a seizure,
which was surprising since they hadn't been trained for that. However, this
has shown that the intelligence of perception in animals that has been
developing and that this shows that their abilities are unique and even better
than the humans. These dogs showed that they can predict a seizure 30
minutes before it started, they do things like pull on her clothes, bark at her and
more.

Clever Hans is an example of animals that can use perception with humans.
This is the case of Clever Hans, a horse that can answer mathematical
questions, but not because it knows how to do Mathematics, the Dr. phycologist
Pfungst determined that Clever was not smart when he couldn’t answer a
question if the person is not in plain view. In other words, Clever could solve
problems because he knows the time that he has to stop to get the right answer
by his own perception, which obvious it is surprising and it is a very interesting
skill that shows that the capacities of animals have evolved so much.

Finally, animals use perception in their lives unconsciously, as Dr Pfungst

demonstrated that animals don’t use intelligence. All of these cases show how
animals can recognize signals and develop unique abilities that are obviously
not the same as humans but still demonstrate some degree or category
of cognition.

PRE-WRITING ACTIVITIES AND DRAFTS

My work life has been improving over time. I studied the career that I always
wanted, and for years I worked in a great company that gave me many
experiences and incredibly work environment, Therefore, after many years I
decided to open my own company. At first it was not easy, many times I thought
about giving up, but I am impetuous and with hard work I managed to get my
business ahead.

It is the best career that I could have chosen and now I can say it but at the
beginning I was full of fear and doubts because I had to face many obstacles.

For example

learn a lot about law find a good job

I didn't have a good network of contacts

In short, that were situations that I had to go through in order to achieve

success, As for love, _ married my best friend, a person I've known since I was
a child and I have a daughter, although I didn't really like children, now have a
happy life, but I know that this can change at any time, nothing is perfect in this
life but I will continue trying every day to build a better life for me and my family.

"H" and I bought 50 years ago and is like a member more of my family. I start
my days with a cup of sweet and hot chocolate because it helps me start my

CORRECTION OF THE EVALUATION

It is 5000, My life has been good enough, and I've been able to do the things I
never thought I'd do, and I'm happy about it. Many of the things that have
happened to me have been by choice, I'm not tired of the life I'm having and I
don't think I will be for much longer. Now that I'm 172 years old, my life has
been like a roller coaster, everything is magical and perfect, I am living a dream.

My love life has been good, my first husband passed away and my current
husband spoils me a lot, so much so that he bought a big house for my whole
family. I have married twice, the first at 31 years old with my first husband, I had
four children with him, and with the second I married at 120 and I had 2 children
with him, now they are parents as well. Today, I'm a grandmother of 17 children
and great grandmother of 3 children. My house has been a mansion to have
enough space for each member of the family, we have around 16 bedrooms
and 12 bathrooms. We also have many toys for the kids, so most of the time
you will feeling like you are living at a theme park. I'm almost always with my
grandchildren, because their parents have to work, my house dances every
time we are in there. The advantage of immortality is that you become very
good at many things.
I have enough time thanks to
my longevity, that’s why I
have decided to study
various
careers to keep me busy and
have more job opportunities.
I have studied four careers,
in
which are business
administration, psychology,
industrial engineering and

something to entertain
myself, I
consider myself a vigorous
and emphatic person. Other

that
working for me is

PRE-WRITING ACTIVITIES AND DRAFTS

Mandatory volunteering is given to young high school and university

students, many times this issue is considered delicate since there are several
comments for and against. However, I agree as many people benefit when it
comes to volunteering. Despite the fact that mandatory volunteering is an
oxymoron, it is really helpful for communities to be able to progress.

Firts, Mandatory volunteering helps young people to be involved with the

community, this helps in many ways to each person that is living in this space,
especially young people since they are taught to be able to help the most
vulnerable, and in that same way they are also taught to be able to improve
the place where they live, like fixing the streets, or painting certain places
where necessary. It should be noted that this work will help to have a better
community with all the inhabitants, in the same way it will help to take care of
and maintain the quality of people.

Second, Mandatory volunteering helps to improve the skills of children, youth

and adults. This is because every job requires having certain skills in order to
help. That is, in the case of helping a retirement home, volunteers should be
able to help these people do their routines, so physical strength and social
skills are required to be able to communicate with these people. These
qualities are what we all have, only sometimes we do not know how to improve
them, and that is why volunteering is a way to improve these qualities.

Communities is progressing due to the fact that young people are

accomplishing mandatory community. These reasons are just some why
mandatory volunteering is necessary in young people, since it helps to
improve various skills and also to be able to fulfill the role of citizen.
