Torque‘n’ Tension 12

Provisional Technical Datasheet

Product Code # 187220

Description
Torque ‘n’ Tension 12 is a clear water based sealer for application on fasteners
in order to modify the torque tension properties. It is particularly suitable for use
on e-coat black, barrel lacquered surface following zinc/nickel electroplating.

Torque and Tension 12 is supplied as a ready to use low viscosity liquid that
can be applied by dip spin to limit thread fill problems and unwanted waste do to
dragout.

Coefficient of friction between 0.10 – 0.16

Resistant to thermal shock
Free of chromium compounds
Increases the corrosion performance of the lacquer coating

1. Physical Properties
Physical Appearance White liquid
Flash Point > 190ºF (90ºC)
Solubility in water Complete

2. Operating Standards
Concentration 50-100% by volume
Temperature 68 – 86ºF (20 – 30ºC)
pH 8.0– 8.8
Dip time 20 - 40 seconds
Agitation Mechanical or barrel rotation
Filtration Recommended

3. Solution Make-Up

The solution is supplied ready to use.

For parts where the e-coat solution could become trapped (leading to thread
fill problems) the e-coat should be diluted up to 50 % with demineralised
water. This will reduce the viscosity of the sealer.
Note: In use, the temperature of the working solution must not be allowed
to fall below 60oF (15oC). For storage, the solution must not be
allowed to fall below 40oF (5oC).

4. Solution Maintenance
As the Torque ‘n’ Tension 12 is applied onto dry articles, little maintenance of
the solution is necessary. Where necessary the solution level is maintained by
adding the Torque ‘n’ Tension 12 liquid.

In the case of accidental dilution, the concentration can be determined by the

analysis method outlined in Section 5.

It is essential to maintain the pH between 8.0 – 8.8. If necessary the pH can

be adjusted by using a dilute ammonia hydroxide solution, (1-5 %). If the
solution is left idle for any period of time, it must be covered to prevent
evaporation of the ammonia.

Note: It is imperative that acid is not introduced into the solution as an

insoluble precipitate will result.

Product consumption
Torque ‘n’ Tension 12 is usually consumed at a rate of 3 - 5 mls/ ft² of processed
surface area.

5. Analytical Control
pH
By pH-meter, (calibrated to pH 9.0 at 68oF (20° C))

Solid Content (% Solids)

Method

1. Weigh an aluminium dish (Weight A ± 0,0001 g)

2. Add approx. 3 g (Weight B ± 0.0001g) of the sample of Torque ‘n’

Tension ZF

3. Dry in an oven at 110 – 120° C for a minimum of 5 hours

4. Allow to cool to room temperature

5. Reweigh (Weight C ± 0,0001 g)

Result –% Solids Content = 100 X (C– A)

6. Operating Tips & Equipment

Tank Polypropylene or polythene tank recommended

Heating De-rated Teflon coated electric heater recommended
Filtration Optional - 20 to 50 micron polythene filter recommended
Racks/Baskets Polypropylene or polythene recommended
Fume extraction Recommended
Agitation Mechanical recommended, particularly around heater
Drying Spin dryer

It is recommend to apply Torque ‘n’ Tension 12 in a basket which is immersed

into the solution and rotated to allow an even coating onto the parts.

1. After the e-coat has been applied and baked, allow to cool to room
temperature before the Torque ‘n’ Tension 12 is used.
2. Immerse the basket in the Torque ‘n’ Tension 12 for 25 - 35 seconds and
drain in order to limit the loss of solution through dragout.

3. Dry the coated parts in the centrifugal dryer (it is preferable to have a slow
rotation speed -150 – 200 rpm. Temperature should be maintained between
140 – 175oF (60 - 80°C).
4. In all cases the parts should be tested under production conditions in order to
ascertain the correct operating conditions (i.e. drying temperature and rotation
speed).
5. To avoid unnecessary damage during this process a slow ramp up to final
speed of should be used.
6. The basket is approximately half filled for the process. Overfilling makes it
difficult to avoid thread fill and sticking together while very low loadings leads
to low coating thickness and unnecessary damage.
7. Generally it will be found that some parts have a greater tendency to trap
excess coating than others so it may be necessary to vary the above
parameters occasionally to maintain good results.
8. In use, the temperature of the working solution must now be allowed to fall
below 60oF (15oC). For storage, the solution must not be allowed to fall
below 40oF (5oC).

Cleaning the Baskets

It is necessary to eliminate any build up of Torque ‘n’ Tension 12 film on the
processing baskets. Torque ‘n’ Tension 12 can be removed using an alkaline
cleaner.

7. Safety In Handling And Use
